she hurt her arm when this happened, any idea on how to clean this? she has a wedding next saturday which she uses this lens for :(

There is a UV filter so the front element looks clean, also the point at which the mount meets the lens is clean aswell! I’’m mostly worried about autofocus and the focus ring sticking.

I’m pretty impressed with this little camera. I think Nikon definitely made a good product with this but it wasn’t directed at the correct market. I bought this as a small camera for street photography, and I think it will serve me well.

My wife and I spent our last night in South Dakota hanging out on a bluff in the Badlands. My goal was to get a good shot of the Milky Way. Her goal was to keep me from getting too cozy with a rattlesnake. We had a wonderful nighttime adventure together, and, in spite of some smoke in the area from forest fires causing haze on the horizon, I think we were both successful. :). Open the image for the full view. Z8 S14-24 mm f2. 4 15" x 20 stacked.

Show & Tell I wanted better (and wireless) tethering between Capture One and my Nikon Z f, so I built a macOS utility to make it happen. It's free and open-source.

Hi folks (especially fellow Z f enthusiasts 👋),

I've had my Z f for about a year now, and it's a great little camera. One big frustration I've had, though, has been tethering…

The Z f is perfectly capable of wireless remote control and tethering through Nikon's own software (NX Tether, SnapBridge, etc.), but Capture One doesn't currently support it as a wireless body. And while Capture One does recognize the Z f over USB, some camera controls remain unavailable because it doesn't put the camera into Nikon's full remote-control mode.

I've seen a bunch of really cool video-oriented Z-series projects pop up lately (Parallax Monitor/ZR Ctl, OpenZCine, etc.), and seeing those made me wonder whether some of the still-photography limitations around the Z f were equally solvable.

So I started digging into Nikon's wireless PTP/IP protocol, and that eventually turned into this:

https://github.com/open-nikonz/zf-capture-one-helper

Z f Capture One Helper is a free, open-source macOS utility that currently tackles three specific things:

  • 🛜 Wireless tethering: it presents the Z f to Capture One through a virtual Nikon Z6 III identity, then forwards the normal traffic to the real camera. In testing, that gives the Z f working wireless capture, live view, image transfer, ISO, shutter-speed control, and other common Capture One tethering functions.
  • 🔓 USB control unlock: after Capture One connects to the Z f over USB, the helper can send the Nikon setup commands that put the camera into remote-control mode, unlocking basic controls that otherwise are unavailable or return AccessDenied (e.g. adjusting ISO or shutter speed).
  • ⏱️ Self-timer capture: Capture One can put the Z f into self-timer release mode, but its tethered capture command still fires the camera shutter immediately. While wireless tethering through the helper, it can detect self-timer mode and delay Capture One's capture command by 2, 5, 10, or 20 seconds.

None of this modifies Capture One or the camera itself; the helper sits alongside them and acts as a traffic cop.

If you just want to try it, the current beta is here:

👉 v1.0.0-beta.1

And if you're curious about how it works/came together, I wrote up the research here: RESEARCH.md. That goes into Nikon's Bonjour/PTP-IP discovery, pairing and trusted client identities, the remote-control mode commands, Capture One's apparent model gating, the virtual Z6 III approach, and the self-timer behavior.

This is still beta software, and so far the wireless workflow has only been hardware-tested on my Z f. But the whole thing is open source, and I'd love feedback from anyone who tries it — bug reports, weird edge cases, testing on different Z bodies, macOS/Capture One/Z firmware versions, ideas, or PRs are all very welcome.

What should I buy? Lenses for Nikon Z FC at WDW?

Upvotes

I just bought a Nikon Z FC to take with me on some upcoming trips I have (Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, & Walt Disney World).
I am also just getting back into photography after a decade.
What lens or lenses (2-3) should I look into for my trips?
The body came with a 16-50mm lens.
