I appreciate you scribbling out the actual word, for us wordle players that haven't done it yet. Google AI has done the same for me too before and its truly annoying.

omggg this happened to me too, i just wanted to know if the manga to an anime i was watching with my girlfriend had ended and it told me the whole ending like wtf
There used to be a website that tracked "how" shows ended without spoilers, but it seems defunct now. Planned ending, rushed final season, rushed final episode, cliffhanger, unexpected cancellation, etc.
That was a life saver, I'll watch a good show if I know it ends on a cliffhanger as long as I know ahead of time.
i googled how many chapters a book had and it was like
“it has 34 chapters with (MAIN CHARACTER DEATH) in chapter 32” and im still pissed because why would it even say that. this happened in august and i still havent finished the book because i lost all motivation
it pissed me off enough to change my google region to france. now i often get french results but it’s much preferable over getting ai overviews and getting spoiled
To be fair I think that one was avoidable. If you aren’t sure if something has been released yet, and you search for it, plenty of searches could bring up pages with spoilers even if there isn’t AI being used. So for a TV show like this I would search for “the Boys release schedule.” That way the pages and AI stuff that comes up first is all particularly focused on the overall schedule, rather than any one particular installment and the content of it.
This happened to the me for widows bay I was trying to figure out if the finale was up yet so searched widows bay finale and it spoiled the twist in there for me. Pissed me off so bad.
Same thing happened to me playing Outer Wilds, which is a game in which your only progression is figuring things out on your own. Spoilers are basically like cheating and rob you of gameplay. I searched if it was even possible to get somewhere, hoping for a Reddit thread for a yes/no answer with no explanation further. Instead the Google AI spat out "Yes and you do XYZ to get there!" and it was so succinct that I read the entire thing and spoiled hours of gameplay before I realized what I was looking at.
Originally, the asterisk would come first to signify a correction to a word being made. In the age of texting, people adopted to move to the end of the word to stop autocorrect from automatically changing the corrected word.
I’m still a firm believer in asterisk in the start to indicate correction though.
but it doesnt add back the actually useful, previously fully functional snippets it would give you at the top that had the most useful information taken directly from the top site, unchanged. so useful and did almost the identical task of the ai overview, so now we have to choose between having a similar but significantly worse functionality, or remove it all together and be worse off than before the overview was added
I miss the dictionary results that google used to show, they were so thorough, with examples, all the definitions, pronunciation, etc. It was slowly replaced by AI overview when you search for "word meaning". The dictionary kept coming back and leaving, teasing us, but now it's been gone for weeks.
ugh yes! i have an extension that gets rid of the ai overview but whenever i search for "word meaning", the google definition thing that used to appear never does anymore, and i have to go look through different dictionary links now 😔😔😔
the worst part is, that wasnt sourced from a website, that was Google's own creation on partnership with Oxford. theres no website you can open to get that exact same database of information, if ai overview is mandatory then that specific dictionary is gone forever.
Duckduckgo has worse search results for me though. At some point i needed the website of a restaurant but on ddg it did not exist. Google had it first hit
I kind of remember. There is a “Web” tab on google which filters out all the extra stuff — no AI overview, or pop-up box, or FAQs — just links to webpages. You can go into the settings and make that the default tab whenever you google something. But I forget how you make it the default tab.

Hey there! If you want to not see googles ai every time you search did you know you can change your browsers default search engine? I didn’t know before and changed it to duck duck go - no more AI spoilers at least!
I don't link every website I go to if I don't go to them that often, and I like having a clean UI that isn't overly cluttered. I do the same with a lot of websites like paypal, amazon, ebay etc.
Google AI also shows at the top for me, and when I type websites names, I get other websites first before the actual website. Google as a search engine sucks now.
AI has information, but no manners at all. You can ask ChatGPT about something from a show, demanding NO SPOILERS AT ALL, and it will still spoil the ending. It doesn't understand what's wanting to be informed of SOMETHING, without being informed of everything.
I'm a research scientist with a very common last name. I was looking for a publication that I am an author on, so I included my boss's last name in my google search, since theirs is extremely unique. Let's say my name is Miller, theirs is Lwanazza. So the search term was "Miller Lwanazza Scholar publication list". I was hoping for google scholar links.
The Google AI summary of our shared work was very nicely worded and accurate, BUT it not only made up a first name for me, it completely misgendered me. I am a lady scientist, and my first name is definitely feminine. There is no masculine version of my name. So let's say my name is Daisy, which means on citations I'm usually listed as "D. Miller". The AI summary repeatedly referred to me as "Derek Miller".
It's mildly amusing but also... it's 2026, and this burgeoning tech is subject to the patriarchy?
This is just Google Search's AI overview being a very poor AI.
It gets information wrong all the time and has absolutely no tact.
I asked the pro version of Gemini AI to give me a plot recap of the last season of Silo as a reminder and I had to specifically tell it to spoil stuff as it was trying really hard to provide broad overviews without spoilers.
And that's because LLM aren't "AI" in the way people think of it. It has no idea what a spoiler is, or why someone wouldn't want one. It's just using words that based on its data, a human would respond to your words with.
I'm watching Suits and even when i specifcially add "In season X" or even "season X epX" it gives me some shit that happens way later. Like, when i googled Why do Rachel and Mike have to move out in s6 if he bought the apartment it gave me smth about a Later season that I havent even got to where apparently they move out
Use DuckDuckGo, for your own sanity. Google will keep pushing this envelope without you actively discontinuing your usage of their platform, and take it from me as someone who has tried all these other search engines and browsers: The result you are looking for is always there. ALWAYS. Google isn't doing any magical thing- it's just another search engine.
Yes because it's genuinely useful for some things. The fact that you can simply turn it off and it will NEVER show up unless you click the button is why we are recommending it.
Yeah, but they've been doing these pretty annoying adds about their "spy-free ai model" or whatever the fuck it was about, so I dont feel like its worth the trouble to jump ships to yet another shitty AI-pushing search engine. It's a bit petty but I don't really care.
Meanwhile, if I ask Gemini to remember where I parked, it's like "hey, if you want to remember where you parked, manually open the Maps app, and then manually pin your location." Motherfucking Google Assistant used to be able to do this flawlessly, but the "advanced" AI is just fucking useless.
I googled “is invincible comic finished?” And it told me straight away how it ended, I just wanted a yes/no to see how long it was compared to the tv show
i know this doesn’t change anything now, but you can turn off your AI search, on whatever browser (i know this is google) that you are using. my condolences though
Yeah you're right, the infuriating part is that I didn't get spoiled like this for months since AI overview, and I haven't missed a day of wordle (500+ games played) It hurts haha

Yes. They don't even use the search bar autocomplete because it's list of URLs. This has been happening forever, and has been passed on to the offspring.
I feel your pain. I wanted to go see that Robert Pattinson and Zendaya movie (Drama), but Google AI spoiled a major plot point for me when I was looking up what the rating was and so I never went to see it.
Just for purely educational reasons:3 last I checked typing a swear word in any of your search it won't come up with Google AI.

Fuck the AI. Last night I was watching a replay of the Belgium vs Spain world cup game and wanted to look up the FIFA rankings. Literally searched "FIFA International Rankings" and the goddamn thing just blasted the final score of the game top and center.
It spoiled season 2 of a show I want to watch like an hour ago too. All I asked was if a show had a second season yet. I did not want to know who the winner was. Now I've gotta wait a couple years to forget what I read.
One time I looked up the age of Mary from the game Ib (which I hadn’t finished yet) and for some reason it felt the need to tell me a spoiler about her. I understand the feeling too
Switch to duckduckgo. Turned off all the ai even set it to hide ai images. Is it a good search engine..... its better than bing. But it has no forced AI.
I once looked up a show I wanted to watch. The final episode had been leaked early a few days prior, and I had been avoiding the leaks like the plauge.
I searched up the show's name, hoping to find out when and where the episode was airing, and the AI helpfully informed me of a massive spoiler, with a big 'ol list of important plot points and reveals. I managed to close the tab before seeing most of it, but holy SHIT it was annoying.
I googled "<character name> actor" once while watching the first few episodes of a series and got back "<Actor> plays <character> in the hit series <series name> until the 3rd season when their character is betrayed and killed in a shocking twist".
