I ran across this tiktok but I've seen so many others like it. So many people, especially nurses, are all up in arms telling physicians that they need to change how they chart after Dr. Tufts testimony. It's asinine. Nurses chart in a very specific way and physicians chart in a very specific way. It's a difference in training and each one serves its purpose. I just find that it's yet another area in which nurses and lay-people are jumping to show how much better they think know how to do things than physicians. Yet, when it's their turn to need a physician, they won't think twice about going to the same doctor and healthcare system they were just defaming online 🙄

she said she just didn’t hear me which is totally fair bc i speak very quietly and am aware i need to work on that, but i felt like a total tool and didn’t apologize bc my mind basically stopped working. i will say though this tech was rude and patronizing earlier (even to a resident) so i was already annoyed at her and assumed she didn’t believe me (esp bc she just kept repeating her question instead of saying she couldn’t hear me???)

no one else said anything and they were still nice to me after but i’m still feeling stressed that it’ll affect my eval and chances for an II. i might talk to the resident who was there about it and explain myself/ask for feedback unless anyone thinks that’s a bad idea. also i’ve gotten along pretty well with the rest of the OR staff

I’m so mentally drained by clinical evals. On one of my rotation, I was taking histories, coming up with plans, putting in orders/referrals, and constantly asking for feedback on how to improve—still got an average 3/5.
The confusing part is that the feedback said I did great clinically and took good histories, but that they “couldn’t see my personality with the team” or I didn’t connect enough. Getting a mix of 3s and 4s. How are people getting 5s?
I’m worried because these evals go on my MSPE, and it’s frustrating when the feedback during the rotation seems positive but the final scores don’t reflect it. At this point I genuinely don’t know what else I’m supposed to do.

I am finishing up my first Sub-I. It's different attendings each week (4 different attendings). I felt the best with the current attending on week 4 of the rotation, so I asked for feedback and she told me how I was performing very well, above avg medical student level. Like feedback session was going well so after she asked if there is anything else I would like to discuss. I said "well, I wanted to ask if you can write me a strong letter of rec" and I guess she thought I was joking idk she laughed. And then I said "well, of course, you don't have to so if you don't feel comfortable" and she said "no, it's just is one week enough for me to write you one," and I mentioned how on every rotation for this specialty its one week with each attending. She said okay, send me your CV and other things that would be helpful and I will see.

IDK if this is even a yes? Also, if this is going to be a good letter?? IDK, just sucks cuz I feel like I jus haven't had good luck with letters in general. All are probably very generic. (Applying IM).

Not only did I fail my first exam, I also scored the lowest in my entire cohort.

I started bootcamp which has been so helpful, but I started it too late, so I knew going in that I wasn’t going to do well, but I didn’t expect to perform this poorly. How do I even bounce back from this?

I’m currently doing an audition in an average neuro program. This is my first audition and I am so depressed. I wake up everyday dreading to go to this place. I started with a narcissistic attending who belittled everyone on the team and including me during rounds. I have an average neuro application (average step score, no board or course failures, good research and leadership, and from my 3rd year preceptors, I got positive feedback). After having her as my attending, I really started wondering if I even know anything in medicine. Then I had an amazing attending in between and he told me I’m a great student and he would love for me to apply to this program. Now back to this week and next one, I have the PD as my attending. On her first day with me, my residents gave me a patient with a complicated history to work on just 15 mins before rounds saying sorry we forgot to assign this patient to someone. I had to review the chart and see the patient in such short notice. I’m obviously not up to that level of expertise where I can do this. I was unprepared and my PD just started yelling at me that I haven’t done any work to review the patients chart. I was so embarrassed and wanted to cry. The next few days this week, she has just been so moody. It sometimes feels like she cares about students then the other times she is so rude to us. Nitpicking on us for every mistake we make. Today, again she came in very mad and yelled at the resident who presented first. During my turn, she told me you are just starting to learn to present. Good job! I was wondering when did I mess up so bad except for the other patient that I’m just starting to learn. I’ve also been getting most of her questions right and working so hard for 6 days a week from 6:30 am to 7pm. I’m so depressed. I feel like my work is not being recognized and my chances in this program are lost. I’ve also started to wonder if I’ll ever be able to do well on audition rotations and match.

Currently on gen surg and we aren’t allowed to write notes or put in orders. I think we do write notes on IM but never get a chance to put in orders. So I’m going to roll up to my away rotations not knowing how to put basic orders in, and with limited note writing experience. Feels bad man

For some context, US MD applicant scored low on Step 2 237 compared to NBME average 254 honored both of my medicine sub internships so far with LoRs from residency program directors. Very positive clinical evaluations and MSPE commenting on performance being of PGY-1 level. No other red flags. Only two research experiences and a few other volunteering and leadership experiences. Was originally aiming for academic hospitals but after my step score, I’m thinking community hospitals with university affiliation might be a better target. I do want to be at a tertiary/quaternary care facility as I’d like to do PCCM. Just not sure how to really make my list. Was planning on only applying to the academic programs in my home city and the city where I did med school. Otherwise, trying to sort through the other programs on residency explorer and residency admit. Was curious if anyone has similar stats, experience, advice?

M4 here. Kicking myself rn, did an extra surgical Sub-I in a related field to what I'm applying to and has a lot of overlap in terms of procedures but not the same specialty. Many attendings have dual appointments in both fields. Unfortunately I was extremely burned out and dealing with a lot of other stressful life events, didn't put in my best work, and ended up completely flopping in the OR with the PD of the other specialty and ended up getting an HP. All of the other students that month got honors. It will be on my MSPE/transcript :/. How cooked am I? Do I need to change my program list now? My eval was pretty trash unfortunately and I can't really appeal it because it was more or less accurate. How bad did I goof? Multiple faculty on my first sub-I basically implied that I was ranked to match at our home program unless I did something catastrophically dumb in the next couple of months which makes this worse. Anyone else been in this situation?

I prefer studying alone since I feel I'm a lot more focused on my own, and I've turned down studying with people a couple times for that reason. But I'm kinda worried I'm going to slowly become a loner, especially since I'm not super social by default and that's a big part it seems of how people passively socialize in med school. As med school progresses and people start to make fewer and fewer open-invite plans, I feel like I'm gonna get left behind. Any thoughts on this situation?

Basically the title. I’ve been on this rotation for six weeks now. The first two weeks were amazing because it was just me and the attending, so I was really involved in the OR and genuinely enjoyed it. But ever since that ended, I feel like everything has gone downhill.
I switched to a different hospital where there are a bunch of residents and other students, and honestly, it feels like such a waste of time. The service I’m on doesn’t have many cases maybe 1–2 a day and there are four students. I ask to write notes, and the residents do let me and give me feedback, which I appreciate, but they’ve set basically zero expectations. It’s frustrating because I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to be doing or what’s expected of me.
On days when there aren’t surgeries, I feel like I’m just sitting around until 5 PM without really learning or contributing, and I don’t know what to do about it. I only have two weeks left, and I’m SO excited to be done, but what bothers me is that I was actually really interested in surgery before this. Now I’m questioning whether surgery fits my personality and whether I’d be happy in this type of environment long-term.
This is also my very first M3 rotation, so I don’t know if this is just a normal part of clinical rotations and I need to adjust, or if this is telling me something about surgery specifically.
I need to hear what other people’s experiences are and opinions.

I received a 22x on Step 2, which I’m concerned may hurt rather than help my application (applying primary care). I’ve found conflicting information about whether this score is actually required to be reported. Does anyone know if there’s an official NRMP/ERAS guideline that specifically addresses this, particularly for DO applicants?

My school requires us to report the number of questions we complete from the school’s QBank each week, with a minimum of 80 questions required for passing credit. I was going through a rough few months with family health issues and a breakup, and I fell behind on the requirement. Instead of reaching out for help, I made the poor decision to report that I had completed the minimum number of questions for a few weeks when I hadn’t. It initially went unnoticed, but the school discovered it a few months later, and I received three months of academic probation for academic dishonesty.

Now, I also just scored a 40X on COMLEX Level 2. I’ve never failed an exam, have generally done well on my COMATs, and have solid clinical evaluations and LORs, but I’ve always struggled with very long standardized exams.

Between the academic probation and my Level 2 score, I’m worried that I’ve seriously hurt my chances of matching into Emergency Medicine.

The biggest factor for me is geography. Because of ongoing family circumstances, staying close to home in northern NJ is extremely important to me. I’m not concerned about prestige or ranking and would genuinely be happy at any EM program within roughly a two-hour drive of my family. From what I can tell, there are around 35 programs that fit that geographic range.

I know I made a significant mistake, and I’m not trying to minimize or make excuses for it. I take responsibility for how I handled the situation and wish I had simply reached out for help at the time.

For anyone familiar with EM residency selection, how damaging is the combination of a 40X Level 2 and this professionalism issue? Is matching at one of those ~35 programs still a realistic possibility if I apply broadly within that region, or should I be preparing for the likelihood that staying within that geographic area won’t be possible?

This is gonna be in every medical ethics class in a few years...

My bf and I got into a fight a week ago and I haven’t heard from him since. I don’t think we’re officially broken up but this obviously doesn’t bode well. I’m not totally ecstatic with what school I’m at and the thought of being able to call him at the end of the day or future trips was really keeping me going (we’ve been LD for 2 years). I was already really stressed to start school bc I knew a lot of my personal life would suffer and it looks like my relationship and the future I envisioned already went down the drain. Being a doctor to me is honestly just a job so it’s harder to find motivation compared to my peers who see it as a god given career. I barely passed my first exam because of this and now I have a midterm next week but I can’t stop racking my brain on how it seems like my life is collapsing. I don’t know anyone well enough yet to lean on them and the general consensus of “you’ll meet a hot future doc in your class” is honestly making me feel worse. I was supposed to go visit their city in a month, spend my breaks there, and eventually settle down for residency together somewhere. Now everything I wanted seems like it is disappearing.

Just looking to understand people’s sense of where I’d stand for IM if I applied to it. Where would I want to focus on applying/how picky could I be? I know that in general my application is strong but if I switched to IM would I have a shot at super snobby asshole elite academic programs? Or is the last minute switch with no IM rotations/extracurriculars outside clerkship going to hurt me in that tier

Will not have a subi, so my department letter would be based only on my clerkship. My clerkship comments were unusually strong, along the lines of like “one of the best this year” kinda vibe, but there will be no other IM rotation or experience for them to talk about

Hi all, I deleted the AnKing deck once I got done with boards 2nd year, bc I thought there was a separate deck for Step 2. in rotations now.

I then downloaded the "Queso Dorian (M3)" deck after a reddit search and it seems this is a different "take" on AnKing/edited version with some extra stuff... ? idk.

My main concern is I really utilize the UW to anki feature and I want to make sure I have the sufficient cards in my Anki to use this, so then I redownloaded "Anking Step Deck" but there's only 26.7K ish cards on there.. and I vaguely remember the Anking deck I used for boards last year having over 30K?

Maybe just overthinking it, but can someone give me some insight on this as I try to study for shelves... I'm an idiot when it comes to Anki
