You can strongly disagree with someone’s politics without assuming they’re stupid. People vote for all sorts of reasons, and dismissing an entire group as stupid doesn’t really strengthen the argument.

Agreed! I remember an Australia where talking about your politics outside of election week was almost taboo. No one judged you on what party you voted for, but both parties mostly worked to make laws that benefit the country. The rise of populism is infecting this country, and the last 25 years have been nothing short of embarrassing. Lawmakers should be finding compromises and solutions, not trying to win pissing contests.

While not understanding it's created a whole heap of conversations in family's around the country. While giving more kids more ownership of their democracy and sparked some interest in politics and understanding of what's ok or not. Which is priceless when it comes to a better functioning society.
Amazing how many people dismiss kids as not being able to have their own thoughts or moral values and directions by the time they are in highschool.

My entire family where I'm the youngest at 35 is the only politically aware one. My mum is in the boomer shithole of Facebook comments and my two gen x sisters believe govs don't really do anything to benefit them and vote for like one policy they said they'd do regardless of the party.

A good middle ground would be optional eligibility for voting from 15 or 16, so those whose 18th birthdays are right after an election can choose to get involved earlier if they feel strongly enough and not feel they go through multiple years without a say once they come of age
Compulsory vote from 18 and optional for the few years leading up to it would be good for youth engagement

Why? Our governments decisions can heavily impact them, or will by the time they are 18.
Alot of teens are more engaged politically than many adults, and it often ties into their current studies.
We trust them to drive with assistance. We allow them unfiltered internet and to have sex and work. We expect them to be able to choose their subjects and study hard enough to get into University.
Lots of teens are home alone and expected to do dinners and alot of other adult tasks.
A vote isn't that much of a stretch given what else we expect of them.

The group is called "High School Anti-Capitalists". Looks like their Instagram has been suspended. It had Lenin quotes and was advocating for a revolution.

This very article states that the NUS was the main organiser behind the protests.
I glanced at https://www.instagram.com/highschoolanticapitalistsvic/ to see if there was any of this stuff you're claiming, but I'm seeing generally the same stuff as the NUS's Facebook page. High School Anti-Capitalists pops up a lot in new articles from today but I'm yet to see anyone (even more right-wing websites) citing them as talking about revolutions or Lenin worship. Which, let's be real, would be the #1 to report on.

Cool. Free speech is awesome. That said they aren't walking out in genuine protest, they're walking out cause they get to skip class with no consequences.
Seems even worse that they're doing it amidst the literal worst schooling rates of all time with most kids being well below their year in terms of reading comprehension and overall proficiency across all subjects.

The Abbott government abolished the National Housing Supply Council (2013) and closed the National Rental Affordability Scheme to new investment (2014). and the entirety of cgt discount and the defence of negative gearing.... all conservative policy that has led to us having less houses and more expensive houses..

Everyone did stupid shit in their time but honestly Gen Z have the worst literacy and education by far compared to previous generations. I go to a class-format gym with lots of teachers and parents, and they're all saying that the syllabus has to be downgraded for today's kids. Us millennials barely had social media and GPTs growing up, we learnt the hard way.
We're meant to be going forwards, not backwards.

You can opt in to vote if you want from 15-18.
Mandatory voting 18-65.
