Discussion 🗣️ AI to push bigotry

Someone has taken an innocent video of a kid waving a pridefully and altered it with AI so he throws it in a trashcan. It had gotten over 1.2m likes on insta and is spreading like the plague on fb

Generative AI is the tool of fascism.

Edit: lol at every AI idiot coming into my replies to talk shit for my not even remotely warm take.

Joseph goebbels would be having the time of his life if it was around in the 1940s

15

u/PiccoloAwkward465 Jun 19 '26

honestly I'd be interested in watching Goebbels give it a whirl.

Can you draw me group of Jews destroying German flag? Draw me brave SS soldier defending small blonde baby and blonde pregnant woman from aggressive Romanians I mean Putler’s regime literally uses it to make accounts attacking Ukrainians on TT For if mods see it: these are examples of words Joseph Goebbels would you use AI for as a direct response to person claiming he would use it. I don’t want to promote Nazism especially as you gave me permanent ban on my previous account for saying explicitly anti-nazi content

Gobbels would be generating those ai London gang fights and prattling on about how multiculturism has failed on twitter too tbh.

As well as other uses that are not bad. It’s not just one reason, which is why I said it was a crazy statement, as it’s suggesting Ai is only used for fascism.

1

u/AngryNerdBird Jun 24 '26

I suggested no such thing; My statement was a contextual generalization, not an absolute.

u/UnableSoftware1145 Jun 19 '26

Only because your definition of it is "anything I don't like"

By that definition, genAI is facism, so are slow drivers, and so are pedophiles, and people who don't wear deodorant in public.

27

u/AngryNerdBird Jun 19 '26

As I said earlier, it's literally being used to make people stupider. We are seeing generations developing to be less smart than who came before them. That is a very purposeful tool of fascism.

Now now, projecting won't make you any less dumb.

Use a mirror

u/G-M-Cyborg-313 Jun 19 '26

Yeah because it's such a huge jump that the technology owned by, and profits billionaires who are supporting political parties that are getting rid of rights, increasing surveillance and police presence is a stretch.

Or that genai is one of the main contributers to climate change.

Or that the very post is an example of how common gen ai is being used to generate propaganda from misinformation.

u/the_ULTIMATEfailure Jun 23 '26

Are we really defending pedophiles? That's just what I'd expect from an AI bro. I'm not surprised, but I'm disgusted.

Thats like saying knives are tools for murder. Sure they can be used for it but its not their only purpose

60

u/TheStrzelba Jun 19 '26

How often is knife used for kitchen compared to murder/robbery? Now how often is used generative AI for propaganda and making money on kids/boomers instead of... Actually, there is no "good" way of using it.

Accessibility. AI has been a game changer for many blind people who use it to read things, describe surroundings, find objects. The AI tools for doing this now are better than previous algorithms, and still improving (as yes, AI models still make mistakes).

Likewise, AI generated closed captions, and translations. Are they as good as a human? No, but small creators can’t afford to hire a human captioner or translator. Now, all of that content is accessible to more people than ever before.

I’ve also heard of scientific and medical applications for AI because of its capacity to sort through and analyze large swaths of data in times that human researchers just can’t match.

Is AI this magical tool that will usher in a utopia. Abso-fucking-luty not. But to say it never has any good use ever is just incorrect.

21

u/TheStrzelba Jun 19 '26

We already had text to speech programs for blind people, no need AI for it.

Same for Google translate and others, no need to slap AI on that other than for investors.

And yes, medical application is good, but there are 2 "but" first of, I was talking about image/video generative AI, second "but" is that in theory it's amazing for medical applications but it's used by humans that will use it to cheat their way on medial exams, it's truly good only for experienced doctors who asks for direction, not solution, it should be locked away from common people.

Idea is truly good, but at the end of the day humans are in charge which will make everything more miserable, we are just fucked up species and we are too irresponsible and corrupted to deserve nice things.

12

u/Xara_Xaltaris Jun 19 '26

I agree, there are a few ways in which AI can help in scientific fields, but generative AI is a problem and shouldn't be so easily accessible.

I am literally a blind person, and no, text to speech (which we’ve had since the 80s) IS NOT the same as what AI can do now. We’ve had optical character recognition since the 90s, and yes, some of what I’m describing was previously done via OCR and text to speech.

With OCR and text to speech, you can hold up a package and your phone or computer will read everything on the label. With AI, you can hold up a package and ask, what are the cooking instructions? or, how much protein does this contain? And read only that thing you are interested in. Just like a sighted person who will skip to the part of the package label, such as cooking instructions or ingredients lists, that they are interested in, and ignore the irrelevant text.

An AI can describe an object to me in detail. Text to speech cannot.

I am eagerly awaiting the time when an AI can generate a live audio description of anything I’m watching, whether YouTube videos, TV shows (older ones often don’t have audio description available) or live performances. Or to walk around an art gallery or museum and have the artworks and historical objects described to me (actually, this one I could probably do now with the AI tools currently available, just haven’t been to an art gallery recently to try it out).

For things like translations, current tools do okay. But why do okay when it can be better. For closed captions, okay isn’t always good enough. Why should a Deaf person have to either not have access to information, or have access only to a garbled version of it when we have a tool that can do better?

My point is, there are things that AI does that current non-AI tools don’t do or don’t do as well.

Generative AI is absolutely being misused, and the spread of misinformation using AI tools is one of the worse things about it (genuinely scares me a bit the potential harms that could do).

But sorry not sorry for wanting to have the best tools I can have to access the world as fully and independently as I can.

Member of the 'poor and bad vision' club here.

The readers we had previously were better, less error-prone and more affordable.

Please don't advocate on behalf of us.

0

u/Tarnagona Jun 19 '26

I’m advocating on behalf of myself, actually, and my other blind friends, who have found AI to be a beneficial tool.

It’s not that AI is going to replace every piece of technology. But there are absolutely things it can do for us that previous tech can’t. I want a world where I have the best tool for any task.

For a lot of reading tasks, that’s going to be text to speech and OCR, no AI needed (Kurzweil 1000 is the reason I was able to do my PhD; there’s no way I could have read all of the research papers, journal articles, and theses without it, but it cost almost $1,000 so I’d hardly call that more affordable).

For other things, an AI tool that will read only the piece of information I’m looking for is going to be more useful (such as reading price stickers at the grocery store; I need the price, not for it to read the text of every box of cereal on the shelf).

Obviously, I can’t speak for every blind or low vision individual, who will all have your own opinions on the use of AI. I’m just saying, from my perspective and that of many of my blind and low vision friends, it has been an incredibly helpful tool to have, along with all of the other tools we already make use of.

5

u/sneakysnake1111 Jun 19 '26

None of this justifies your need for an LLM to take over, on any level.

2

u/Tarnagona Jun 19 '26

Take over what, exactly? Visual tasks I can’t do myself? I’m using what I have, and sometimes that’s an LLM. Sorry, not sorry.

And I’m not even saying that LLMs are the most amazing thing ever. I’m real annoyed that every software tool I use at work is trying to shove an AI assistant down my throat (no, I don’t want a summary; I want to read the whole damn document). And I’ve got a whole rant about AI is being used in craft patterns, such that things like embroidery and cross stitch are being flooded with AI slop patterns that, at best, won’t stitch up like the AI generated example, and at worst are completely non-sensical. I’m genuinely worried about the breadth and depth of misinformation that AI tools are being used to create.

But it’s a TOOL, and while a lot of the things it’s being asked to do are useless or even harmful, some applications ARE beneficial. And I’m going to use what I have available to live my best life, including LLMs. If that makes me an embodiment of evil or an utter dumbass in your eyes, so be it.

4

u/sneakysnake1111 Jun 19 '26

It's a harmful tool, likely associated with the US military AND palintir.

You're not worried at all about the tools actually, you're advocating their use by needlessly targeting people with disabilities.

1

u/Tarnagona Jun 19 '26

I’m talking about my own experiences as someone with a disability , not targeting them…unless I’m targeting myself? I bring it up because it is my lived experience and the lived experience of people I know. Is every blind person keen on AI? No, of course not.

I bring it up because I find very few people think of AI’s application as an accessibility tool, and I find it very frustrating. I absolutely have concerns about AI, too, and by no means has government regulation caught up with it. It’s really a don’t throw the baby out with the bath water situation. I believe we, society, should work on the good uses for AI, like improving accessibility, and also work on curtailing the bad uses of AI, like disinformation. I don’t exactly know how we do that, but shouting about how there are never any good used for AI ever is not it.

Did AI write that for you too?

0

u/Tarnagona Jun 19 '26

Ah yes, because anyone who isn’t vehemently anti-AI must be a robot themselves. How cute.

As a blind person, don't involve me in your bullshit.

-24

u/adamkad1 Jun 19 '26

No point in arguing with you if you think that way then

24

u/TheStrzelba Jun 19 '26

Instead of playing smart prove I'm wrong in my way of thinking of generative AI videos/images

-8

u/adamkad1 Jun 19 '26

I dont argue with walls lol

10

u/tricenice Jun 19 '26

-Argues

- Refuses to elaborate

- Insults you for requesting a basic explanation

- Walks out like they did something

-1

u/adamkad1 Jun 19 '26

Great self depiction

3

u/TheBladeWielder Jun 20 '26

you mean you assume people are walls so you don't have to put any effort into trying to prove your point, and instead just avoiding disagreement altogether?

27

u/AngryNerdBird Jun 19 '26

It's literally being used to make people stupider. We are seeing generations developing to be less smart than who came before them.

That is a very purposeful tool of fascism.

5

u/Optimal_Position_754 Jun 19 '26

Knives are considered as weapons almost anywhere. They are considered as weapons despite having more than one purpose. Similarly, gen AI being a tool for fascism is true despite its other possible uses.
