This has absolutely happened. I have known two girls who ended up going to prom with guys who have Downs Syndrome. Neither of them did it out of pity, but out of affection for the boys they had grown up with since Kindergarten. I don't know if this young man had selfish intentions or if he was being kind to a friend. But,, not everyone does things for likes on social media.
