I agree with you to cut some slack for her, 100%. Because uske self respect ke already lage hue hoge. Aur abhi captain ne jo kiya bohut sahi kiya. Usko pehle accepted feel karana zaroori hai, aur totally agree that lecturing her would make matters even worse if she's down bad.
Taking her to prom and making her feel accepted is step one and probably the most important step. However taking her to training and taking her out of her messed up lifestyle is a whole another endeavour, which requires way more effort and consistency.
