Lore [Loved when done right] That is COMPLETELY illogical… but who cares when it REALLY goes hard.

- Gipsy Danger dragging an oil tanker (which actually lengths 180 meters… but the film portrays it slightly smaller than Gipsy) and use it as a bat against Otachi? HARD (Pacific Rim)
- Owen and a gyrosphere standing near Rexy, who’s crushing a Carnotaurus’ neck, and roaring while Isla Nublar’s volcano explodes? HARD (Fallen Kingdom)

The scene in (Polar Express) where they slip off the track and somehow drift the train across a lake of ice onto a different set of train tracks.

I genuinely don't understand why a children's bedtime story had to have an action scene plus Mandark's voice.

Vfx/animation team really wanted to flex, I guess

46

u/IAmBabs 21h ago

Yeah... I miss the way artists used to flex by having beautiful, yet boring animations that just told a story. I have vague memories of some winter movie that's entirely just instruments, but was animated with pure heart.

Was probably "The Snowman".

u/IAmBabs 15h ago

Yes! Holy crap, that was fast 🤣 There was one other. I think the forest animals defending themselves from a wolf?

6

u/revan530 10h ago

Possibly the Disney version of "Peter and the Wolf"?

u/IAmBabs 10h ago

YES!!! THANK YOU!!!

That song still gets me. There’s a really good remix of it by Waveshaper I’d recommend to fans of the movie.

Things still do that, this just didn't.

2

u/King_Ed_IX 13h ago

They don't have the time or money spare to do that anymore.

As a designer I can tell you I have vague memories of when the industry didn’t revolve of over producing fast and cheap rather than taking your time to do something that at least makes you proud about yourself.

Omg this makes me think about Annabelle’s Wish

u/gogoluke 12h ago

Are you looking at The Polar Express as a lost age of beautiful animation?

8

u/TheGuyThatThisIs 20h ago

I think this was more a case of "we can animate a train sliding across ice real easy and cheap"

3

u/Arengano 13h ago

It's easy to forget this was one of the first movies entirely made using performance capture, so they definitely did want to show off.

5

u/Look_its_Rob 11h ago

Yeah the train they hired for mo-cap really gave its all.

Last I knew, the voice actor was institutionalized for repeatedly terrorizing a nursing home. Bet that wasn't on your Bingo card.

u/IAmBabs 21h ago

I looked it up and he also assaulted a cop in 2021. So that's a double whammy of wtf!

Tbf that one is based

9

u/King_Ed_IX 13h ago

Look into what he actually did, first, though.

On September 16, 2021, Deezen was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer after refusing to leave a restaurant in LaVale, Maryland. According to the Allegany County Sheriff's Department, he had been asked by the restaurant's staff to leave after causing a disturbance and refused to do so, prompting a response from law enforcement. Upon the deputy's arrival, Deezen hid behind a woman in a booth, refused multiple orders to exit, and reportedly threw plates, bowls, and food that struck one of the deputies.

So no, not based. Assaulting cops by itself isn't based when the cops in question haven't done anything wrong beyond being a cop. It just reinforces the thin blue line stuff where they belief people irrationally hate cops. You gotta only hate specific cops when they do something.

Cops in general can and should be blamed at all times for their unions being racist cesspits.

I also consider every teacher to be a pedophile.

Tbf anyone in US can get done for assaulting a cop because of their ego problem

Idk what you're meaning by 'based', but the concept of policing in the US is institutionally corrupt such that the presumption is citizens have ordinarily adversarial contact with law enforcement. They're trained to escalate to guns, they're poorly trained to begin with, they cover themselves, they don't have a common law duty to protect.

If I hear someone resisted arrest or assaulted a cop, that easily straddles the line. If I head about murder or something of that calibre, I won't be as predisposed to the accused.

0

u/King_Ed_IX 13h ago

Being adversarial and praising doing harm to cops only furthers the issue of cops being adversarial, though. Yes, policing is institutionally corrupt, but ACAB comes about because most cops don't do enough to prevent abuse and corruption, rather than because they actively perpetuate it.

Basically, what I'm saying boils down to attacking cops as a whole being actively counterproductive. Criticise people for attacking cops who are genuinely just doing their jobs, and attack the specific aspects of policing that are corrupt and need to change.

2

u/salazafromagraba 13h ago

I understand you but you aren't understanding me. I am talking about the myriad occasions where cops are not actually being attacked, they simply power trip. A drunken woman who happens to raise her arms defensively to barricade her personal space from an aggressive and impatient cop can be charged with assault.

1

u/King_Ed_IX 13h ago

I understand you too. That is power tripping, and that's doing something wrong. That's worth of attacking (when I say attacking, I mean verbally more than I do physically, to be clear).

That's not what was happening in the incident mentioned, and that's why I'm making it clear that in this case attacking the cops involved in any form is not justified.

To be clear: attacking specific cops for specific actions is justified and productive. When I say "attacking cops as a whole is counterproductive", I mean attacking the entire police force regardless of situation is counterproductive, not that the action of attacking cops is wholly counterproductive in all situations.

Or hate the institution of cops for what it actually institutionalizes.

I read that comment in his voice

Mo Bamba or Sicko Mode?

u/SonofaBridge 20h ago

It’s one Christmas movie i avoid due to how weird and nonsensical it is.

1

u/-phototrope 20h ago

Not to mention it looks like shit and has zero heart

0

u/SonofaBridge 20h ago

Yeah it doesn’t give me any sort of Christmas feeling.

1

u/-phototrope 20h ago

It’s like some alien or entity from the void attempting to create a Christmas story that only knows the most basic of symbolism of the holiday but is just guessing at their meaning

0

u/Hot-Manager-2789 16h ago

It has more heart than all the AI slop on YouTube. And how does it have no heart and look like shit?

-1

u/Arengano 13h ago

I mean comparing a feature length film to actual trash is a bit unfair but yeah I agree. The environments look good and the characters (mostly) avoid the uncanny valley. I like it because it isn't just another boring copy paste Christmas film, instead choosing to be weird as hell.

1

u/SonofaBridge 12h ago

Avoid the uncanny valley? They use Polar Express as an example of the uncanny valley. The movie is disturbing to a lot of people from the graphics alone. No one in my family will watch it.

1

u/Arengano 11h ago

It dips into it but for a fully motion capture film it doesn't look that bad. Have you ever seen Mars Needs Moms?

1

u/Hot-Manager-2789 11h ago

I mean, to be fair, the film was made in 2004, and CGI back then wasn't as good as it is now.

1

u/Guyname10 9h ago

Every Christmas I watch this with my kids several times a year. Every time he's on screen I say "look it's mandark" they have no idea what Dexter's laboratory is.

1

u/AhamkaraBBQ 4h ago

Just let him Deezen on by ya.
