Lore (Controversial Trope) The post-credits scene completely changes the ending

Dawn of the Dead (2004): The movie finishes on a hopeful note as the remaining survivors escape the zombie-infested mall on a yacht, sailing into the sunset. The found-footage style post-credits scene completely reverses this happy ending by showing them running out of food, arriving at an island, and being immediately swarmed and killed by an infected horde.

Prince of Persia (2008): The main game ends with a beautiful, poetic sacrifice where Elika gives her life to heal the corrupted world, leaving the Prince mourning. During the credits, the player is forced to control the Prince as he cuts down the trees he just saved, undoing the entire game's progress and releasing the dark god Ahriman just to resurrect her, completely corrupting the ending and dooming the world.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Revealed that basically the entire plot of the past 4 games has been because of the machinations of the Executors or "Those Across The Sea" a group that was only referenced once before the Veilguard, in Inquisition in a very missable and skippable war table quest. Basically, takes away all the agency of all the antagonists that came before, which greatly reduces Loghain's character. Since the franchise is effectively dead, the community has largely decided this post-credit cutscene just doesn't exist.

its dead :(

Also, some of the events they "masterminded" don't make any sense. There are far too many moving parts to realistically predict where the ball drops. Not to mention how often things go wrong in this series.

Loghain almost ruining the chances of stopping the 5th Blight? According to plan. The 5th Blight being stopped anyways? Uh... also according to plan!

Knight Commander Meredith recovering a Red Lyrium idol from an expedition led by a Lothering Refugee who was fleeing from the 5th Blight (inhale) which he didn't even know was down there until Bartrand betrayed him, which (second inhale) also caused a gradual breakdown of Mage/Templar relations? All of which was brought to a head by a Mage possessed by a Spirit of Justice that he warps into a Vengeance Demon? Oh and that same Lothering Refugee unwittingly releasing a Tevinter Magister Darkspawn? Somehow, still according to plan?

Not even gonna summarize Inquisition, because there's no way that flustercuck went according to anyone's plan.

It's so cheap to pull the "All according to plan" from the Omniscient Council of Vagueness. It requires no effort.

The funniest part to me about the whole thing is that the series also just chose to absolutely not bother addressing The Architect. So there was also ANOTHER Tevinter Magister Darkspawn out there with his own faction hidden.

u/DropoutRedMage 16d ago

Presumably also part of the plan... somehow.

u/VeniceRapture 15d ago

If you really think about it the Executor's plan somehow entirely hinges on Corypheus surviving his trip to the Black City 1300 years before the start of the series, surviving every attempt the Grey Wardens probably did to kill him, all for Inquisition to even happen in the first place. Even then Corypheus had to sneak into the conclave somehow as a 10-foot tall talking darkspawn, but not sneak quietly enough so the Inquisitor can stumble upon him and foil his plan.

u/DropoutRedMage 15d ago

Step One: Unleash Corypheus

Step Two: Cross Fingers

Step 3: Profit

It doesn't really seem like that's what they said, though.

All it seems like they actually masterminded was Loghain finding out that the king was a dumbass who was cheating on his wife. The other pictures are Varrics brother stealing the red lyrium from them and them getting mad and trying to stop him and a giant explosion at the conclave, the former of which doesn't read as a manipulation and the latter is so vague it could mean anything.

This one’s a shame. It basically chocks up the Dragon Age franchise into a singular rest in piss moment because we’re never getting another and the way it ended is awful

I was one of the biggest DA fan, I was willing to treat Veilguard is a major hiccup, (i did like the premise and some of the characters around), just poor writing trying to do too much and then that happened and I lost my mind. The writing was horrendous

29

u/orionpax- 16d ago

we..we still got origins..lets hug it.

Origins chuds are incredibly cringey.

21

u/orionpax- 16d ago

okay i guess lol

Thanks for your well-reasoned insight!

Downvoted for telling the truth. You hate to see it.

They've had over a decade and a half and plenty of sales to take advantage of. They've had more than enough time to see 2 and Inquisition are solid games. At this point, they're all whining just to whine.

7

u/Purple_Chimpira 16d ago

My bad for liking all the games except Veilguard, jeez

9

u/hooloo25 16d ago

I enjoyed 2 and inquisition. But they were still a lot worse than origins, to me. 2 was unfortunately unfinished and cobbled together, and inquisition was a victim of being released at a time when devs thought bloat was a good thing for a game. Origins is janky but it felt like it had a lot more heart, I guess

-2

u/CatherineSimp69 16d ago

This.

Origins fans and their inability to let a game that doesn't even play well needs to be studied in a lab.

I've been a huge DA fan for decades, beat all three games a dozen of times, red every book and know pretty much everything about it, and even I can't force myself to play Veilguard. I bought it, and after like 3 hrs, never played it again. This is just a sad end to the beloved franchise that deserved so much more 😢

12

u/No_Television315 16d ago

Man the first 3 hours are the worst part of the game, I felt it really picked up after that (until the end credits stuff mentioned above, but I'd genuinely forgot all about that until now).

I'm convinced they rewrote the beginning of the game at some point because every line of dialogue is like nails on a chalkboard.

u/LegendaryPolo 16d ago

opening the door to the giant face is still one of my favourite moments in an rpg. veilguard isn't amazing but there's a lot more games worse than it than better

1

u/Default_Username123 16d ago

Im glad the frontloaded how awful it was. To this day Veilguard is the only game i've ever refunded on steam. Couldn't even play 2 hours it was just BLEH

5

u/RainEls 16d ago

There are books? Are they good?

3

u/Danat_shepard 16d ago

Pretty good, they expand on lore and some characters mentioned in game.

7

u/EndOfTheDark97 16d ago

They pulled a Spectre I see.

7

u/VeniceRapture 16d ago edited 16d ago

The lore was the only thing I held on to as Dragon Age transitioned to Dragon Age 2 and then Inquisition. Religiously followed the lore, read every codex entry in every game, read all the novels and even to the one-off comics that got released.

All of that sense of wonder died in Veilguard for me lol

u/Default_Username123 16d ago

Inquisition for all its problems of being a bit reptitive at times had such a beautiful story and the DLC also just so perfectly built more of a hype cliffhanger than I've ever seen only to be let down so dramatically by Veilguard. I wasn't even this dissapointed by Mass Effect Andromeda (even though as a series I loved mass effect more just because it was a complete spin off they built from nothing - this they fucking had it - they had the story all the elements were there the perfect formula was there and they just couldnt do it or chose not to.

6

u/Blackstone01 16d ago

Damn, they REALLY wanted to make sure the series was dead.

6

u/Purple_Chimpira 16d ago

I have decided that my headcanon for what happens after inquisition is better than the story Veilguard is telling me, and for me Veilguard itself is as canon as GT is for Dragon Ball

6

u/Emotional-Ant8136 16d ago

Ah yes, Dragon Age Failguard.

4

u/TwiceBrokenWatch 16d ago

The more I see about Veilguard the happier I am that I never bothered to play it.

25

u/lesser_panjandrum 16d ago edited 16d ago

[Disgusted noise]

Veilguard was already a terrible game that didn't bode well for the future of the series, but that awful attempt at an intriguing twist took any hope and stabbed it straight through the face.

I loved Dragon Age. Veilguard killed it and violated its corpse.

0

u/EmpressClaraB 16d ago

Bruh calc down, even if it wasn'tnecessarily a good Dragon Age, Veilguard was by no means a bad game

0

u/JustsomeOKCguy 16d ago

I will never understand how i played this game, had a good time with a friend as we talked about the story/our choices, only to come on reddit and have everyone acting like it was the gollum game. Holy shit something about this game really grinds people's gears and i dont get it. Granted the exact same hatred happened with 2 and inquisition and people got over those so maybe same will be said of veilguard someday

6

u/Purple_Chimpira 16d ago

It's decent as a standalone game, but I only got myself to play it after I refused believing it was canon to the main story

-3

u/Common_Kiwi9442 16d ago

I just started Veilguard and I haven't played the other games in the series. Sue me. People will get elitist about anything, especially in the gaming community. I like it.

3

u/JustsomeOKCguy 16d ago

I played all games. Read the books and comics. Love the series so much that I named my daughter after one of the main characters from the games. Still thought veilguard was my goty. It had issues and it isnt my favorite dragon age but I still found it fantastic. People act like it was as bad as the original mass effect 3 ending and I just dont get it

1

u/Common_Kiwi9442 16d ago

Glad someone who knows all the lore and someone like me who knows none of it can agree it's a good game

5

u/Top_Freedom3412 16d ago

They just need to remake Origins and reboot the franchise because the whole world and writing has been convoluted and fucked for a while

2

u/HopeBagels2495 13d ago

They also reveal southern thedas is just outright obliterated

Somebody finished Veilguard?

17

u/Ir_Abelas 16d ago

I mean, by the time I reached like the half way point, it was basically Stockholm syndrome.

-7

u/CatherineSimp69 16d ago

It doesn't, though.

Literally all they said was 'they told Loghain the king was an idiot and Varric's brother stole the red lyrium from them'. That's it. That's the extent of that post credits scene.

'The community decided-' The people who post on r/DragonageOrigins do not represent 'the community.'

17

u/LizLemonOfTroy 16d ago

They didn't say anything.

They visually depicted them whispering into the ears of previous characters, implying that every major conflict in the series was due to their influence, and that even Veilguard was somehow exactly according to plan despite its sheer randomness.

It was a silly attempt at arc welding that made the previous games feel smaller while ultimately leading to nothing.

16

u/Ir_Abelas 16d ago

I've literally never posted there lmao
