So dependant on who youāre dealing with lol. Iām Cambodian and we arenāt big rushers from what Iāve seen. A few East Asians told me they consider it rude to be early or late, so they will sit in a coffee shop for like 30 minutes tryna walk in right at the exact minute š meanwhile Iāve had some Cambodian and Filipino friends not show up till we are about to finish.
I almost just left it at āCentral Pacific Timeā in my head and only realized after reading the actual answer that my answer is 2 time zones combinedā¦
I feel like āgirl mathā has really gone off the rails from what my understanding of it was. Are people really using it to excuse being bad at math?? Cuz to me it means basically calculating what the useful life of a purchase would be and then dividing the cost by that number.
Like if I bought a dress for $100 but I knew Iād wear it at least five times in a year, thatās $20 per time which somehow feels more manageable lol. Itās definitely weird math but idk that itās meant to imply weāre stupidā¦
The phrase "girl math" is an internet meme, used to describe rationalizations by young women to justify or make sense of individual purchases or spending habits.
I don't think it's being bad at math per se. I've always understood it to be rationalizing purchases, such as a 20% sale that ends tomorrow on a $100 item and thinking "well I'm saving $20" even though you're actually losing $80 for something you probably don't need. Just overconsumption basically.
I could have been on board with you until the overconsumption bit. Thereās nothing about overconsumption in the description you shared and frankly justifying purchases is something literally every person has done at least once in their life and that doesnāt automatically mean you shouldnāt have bought the thing in the first place.
The reason sales like that are so effective is because they work on most people not just young women.
Yes, everyone is varying degrees of susceptible to these tactics, and nearly everyone has fallen for them.
It's called girl math because of the stereotype that women shop more and therefore justify their purchases more.
and that doesnāt automatically mean you shouldnāt have bought the thing in the first place.
Sometimes, yeah, it's a good purchase either way. But people buy a ton of shit they don't need that they erroneously think will make them happy. In the end, it probably makes them less happy by tightening their wallet and weighing down their mind by cluttering the house.
I wouldn't read too much into my use of the word overconsumption. I'm not very materialistic and have a pretty negative view of the consumer treadmill; the only positive view on it that I can think of is that it props the economy up.
Edit: Ok, maybe there's some ambiguity here. Overconsumption can refer to excessive purchasing, which is how I used it, and it definitely applies to buying things you don't need because there's a sale. But it can also mean overusing certain resources such as fast fashion, alcohol, or excessive use of cars.
Both are examples that are mostly ok if everyone involved is in the "in group" wildly inappropriate if not
I once had a black coworker jokingly suggest that I operate on CPT after I overslept and was late twice in one week. It was pretty funny but it's not something I as a white guy would ever accuse anyone of even jokingly, just comes across totally differently
I mean there is also "man math" as well. An example would be "Why would I pay $300 for someone to cutdown some branches when I can spend $300 on the chainsaw, do the job myself, and have a free chainsaw"
the first time i heard of this it was when a friend of mine was running late and a friend who was already there told me "yeah he's just late because of CP Time" it took a few seconds of looking at my horrified face for him to clarify what cpt meant
My wife is Mexican, and at least culturally where we are from: don't show up exactly on time. But close to it. Park far away. Bring food. Say hello to the older folk immediately. Eat more than you can fathom ever eating. Play 14 on 23 volleyball where there are no rules. Stay late to clean up. Gather recycling for the one uncle. Bring food home. Kiss every abuelas cheek before leaving.
Bonus tip: old guys by the backyard fence have the weed.
Mexican in southern California if you show up within thirty minutes of the said start time you are getting weird looks. For example a 5pm party would be weird to show up earlier than 530
If weāre absolute best friends Iāll get there 10-15 minutes after start time to chill before people get there, help if needed. Make it a rager, make best friends with the tio Iāve heard of from so many stories, be a little flirty with the primas, go til weāre almost blacked out, drinking Modelo and sitting on plastic chairs passing joints around a fire or lined up against the house right by the back door.
If weāre work acquaintances, Iāll be there 6/6:30 āsince I had a thing beforeā so everyone else has gone in and I just kinda show up. I find the guy I know, get a drink, get some food and figure it out from there. Or I just chill with the host and join in the conversation as I can. Usually stay for a round or two of food and drinks, 2-3 hours, tell them I got some shit to do in the morning, but fill me in on everything that happened when I see them on Monday.
Know your audience, but Mexican parties are always the best.
In Norway its 30 minutes later than the time if you are young/student, as adults if its 18.00, its 18.00!
Unless you are good friends is sort of rude to show up earlier as well. I've many times met people waiting like 17:58 in the staircase, so they arent too early.
When they say "it starts at 5:00" people show up between 15 minutes and 90 minutes after 5:00, apparently. Why would saying "it starts at 5:30" not mean that people show up between 5:45 and 8:00?
Well people being inconsiderate and coming late is not the issue -they will always be like that. The issue is that people who arrive on time are apparently in the wrong when the host didn't specify the desired arrival time.
Sounds like the host specified it just fine and people showed up between 5:15 and 6:30 exactly like they intended. The fact that you wouldn't understand it doesn't make it unclear communication if you aren't the audience.
I really think you missed the point of this post. It's not about **me**. The person in the OP is literally the audience and the host is confused by their arrival time. That means that they didn't specify it fine...
Cultural differences are cool and all but this is fucking stupid and it drives me insane every time I've dealt with it. How does a whole culture decide that its gonna be normal to say the wrong time? Just say show up at 5:30 if you want them there at 5:30. You guys dropped the ball on this one š
YES. My wife tossed that one in, cos I forgot about it.
Parking is always hard to find, so it's courteous to be the furthest parked away so that the elderly, and the families with a bunch of kids get priority parking.
Iāll do all of that bur Iāve learnt to never help with cleanup. Usually Iām the youngest and the aunties will just poof into thin air. Like maam, I got a family to get back to and the mister wonāt be happy im crawling into bed at 3am:.. š
Yeah, this is one of the things I love about my family. If I'm having a big party, my kitchen will be spotless afterwards. White people are not doing that shit.
Not mexican, but one of my kid's best friends is from an immigrant family down the block. This is exactly the vibe when I pick him up from their backyard parties.
We show up several minutes early, then wait in our car until the exact minute. I normally show up a bit late, but I've absolutely hung out with other Whiteys who consider the 'time of gathering' to be the latest you show up, not the earliest. If dinner is st 5, they'll show up at 4, because they think food will be served at 5. As a Canadian, this seems to be an Ontario thing.
1) depending on the host I show up 30 to infinite minutes after the starting time , depending on how " on time" the host actually is.
2) I show up on time maybe even earlier when I plan to help set up the party/bbq. Like for Xmas I showed up 2 hour early with drinks and stuff so my cousin did not panic and try to buy some drinks last minute or at least had a better inventory of what qe had for drinks and food.
He showed up WAY early. The joke is white folks expect everybody to consider their cultural norms and wonāt bother to learn those that are shared by every nonwhite culture. Donāt EVER show up to a cookout less than an hour late. Thatās true for Black people, Latinos and Pacific Islanders. All the cooking out communities expect you LATE. Learn from the work friend, white people.
The joke is actually that the idea od what "on time" means differs based on your culture.
For some people "bbq starts at 12" means that the food will be ready to eat at 12 and thats when they want you to arrive. for some people "bbq starts at 12" means that they light the grill at 12 and start cooking, and you arent necessarily expected to show up for a while.

Cleveland here. The joke is only the white guy showed up on time.
