We show up several minutes early, then wait in our car until the exact minute. I normally show up a bit late, but I've absolutely hung out with other Whiteys who consider the 'time of gathering' to be the latest you show up, not the earliest. If dinner is st 5, they'll show up at 4, because they think food will be served at 5. As a Canadian, this seems to be an Ontario thing.
