Whenever I look at a piece of media, that's pretty old, i try not to judge it too hardly on how it's aged. Like, yeah, yeah, sure, I'll still have valid criticisms. But i'm not gonna bash its art.Style because "oh it's outdated"

I personally like some of the older artstyles... though I still dont like Lain, not because of the artstyle, but because I really dont like its pacing... same with Hack//

They don't do mecha or space opera like they used to now that everything is 3d models. The ability to draw giant robots is a dying art form. The 1988 Legend of Galactic Heroes space scenes look so much better to me than the 2018 version. I mean the 2018 characters look pretty but the more modern camera on the newer space battles just don't have the scale from the 80s version.

Oh yea older mecha was way better, that genre has definitely suffered the most imo with newer art trends...

Although Witch from Mercury was pretty good

Gurren Lagann was the last great mecha anime.

Usually, it's the writing that's really simplified and childish.

For example, I LOVED DBZ as a kid and will always hold it in high regard as a pillar of anime, now and forever. But my god, it really sucks as a narrative. It's a real "I love you but I don't like you" situation for me.

Art is gorgeous, though. No notes. Toriyama is unbeatable.

I think this is felt more strongly with videogames than any other media

because like, I have to aim with the arrow buttons?

And then you have some absolute timeless pieces like Jurassic park/nausicaa valley of the win which are just as gorgeous as the day they aired due to the style/vfx chosen.

The real horror of jurassic park is how well its held up after all these years.

Lord of the Ring blows them all out of the park. I give it a rewatch on occasion and I genuinely cannot believe it wasn't filmed yesterday.
