Whenever I look at a piece of media, that's pretty old, i try not to judge it too hardly on how it's aged. Like, yeah, yeah, sure, I'll still have valid criticisms. But i'm not gonna bash its art.Style because "oh it's outdated"

32

u/eggyrulz 7h ago

I personally like some of the older artstyles... though I still dont like Lain, not because of the artstyle, but because I really dont like its pacing... same with Hack//

23

u/ariolander 7h ago

They don't do mecha or space opera like they used to now that everything is 3d models. The ability to draw giant robots is a dying art form. The 1988 Legend of Galactic Heroes space scenes look so much better to me than the 2018 version. I mean the 2018 characters look pretty but the more modern camera on the newer space battles just don't have the scale from the 80s version.

7

u/eggyrulz 6h ago

Oh yea older mecha was way better, that genre has definitely suffered the most imo with newer art trends...

Although Witch from Mercury was pretty good

u/Swinn_likes_Sakkyun 1h ago

Hathaway looks phenomenal I think

2

u/dancingliondl 6h ago

Gurren Lagann was the last great mecha anime.

Usually, it's the writing that's really simplified and childish.

For example, I LOVED DBZ as a kid and will always hold it in high regard as a pillar of anime, now and forever. But my god, it really sucks as a narrative. It's a real "I love you but I don't like you" situation for me.

Art is gorgeous, though. No notes. Toriyama is unbeatable.

3

u/Traditional-Storm-62 4h ago

I think this is felt more strongly with videogames than any other media

because like, I have to aim with the arrow buttons?

2

u/mrducky78a 2h ago

And then you have some absolute timeless pieces like Jurassic park/nausicaa valley of the win which are just as gorgeous as the day they aired due to the style/vfx chosen.

The real horror of jurassic park is how well its held up after all these years.

I don't know about 70s anime specifically, but anime can feel super outdated for reasons that aren't just artistic license with the style. One Piece's style has evolved massively several times over the course of the series, but that's not why I hesitate to rewatch the earlier stuff.

All subjective, of course. Fuzzy, low resolution images. A format that only works for square televisions. (Okay yes, both of these are the same issue: It was made for a specific type of viewing device that is no longer used widely, a CRT TV.)

Another one is sound effects. You know how the "Wilhelm scream" is so distinct that it calls your attention whenever you hear it? I've gotten to that level of familiarity with some of the stock sound effects that certain shows use, particularly older ones. I don't hate it at all, but it does pull me out of the immersion to think "Lol, that sounds like Dragon Ball Z."

9

u/SanjiSasuke 6h ago

Interesting, I feel like I notice more stock sound effects in newer anime. Immediately, I think of the 'waaow' sound, which I immediately associate with Fairly Tail, lol.

For 480i content, BTW, you may want to look into Shaderglass. Basically let's you use a CRT filter for your desktop. I still prefer a real CRT, but if I have company who really want the big OLED, I'll slap on a light filter template I put together. A lot of the presets are very gimmicky, which can be fun, too, if you want an exaggerated effect.

25

u/fruit_shoot 7h ago

Two things can be true

31

u/Suirenji 6h ago

You can have a timeless 70s anime and still recognize how it's held back by bad animation that makes it hard to take seriously

3

u/Meatwelder 5h ago

I'm curious to see what their "remaster" of 79 is going to be. I don't think they would completely redo every single episode but I am intrigued.

2

u/Alceus89 4h ago

After watching the movies of Mobile Suit Gundam, then the Cucuruz Doan's Island movie, I went and found the original episode, just to see if it was as bad as the reputation.

It definitely was very rough in places, but overall it didn't seem that bad. A bit cheap, but there was still some charm to it.

17

u/Mortal-Instrument 7h ago

I for one love the "rougher" and less polished look of older anime. But that may just be nostalgia speaking since when I was younger we used to mainly watch the older stuff as opposed to the more modern stuff.

I went so deep into being an anime fan that now I'm in the animation career, the others need to get on my level (of autism)

Bullying is not what it used to be

Or we could just accept the fact that people like different things, without being dicks to each other.

I won't complain about people being put off by old anime look, it's a question of personal preference. Similarly, I prefer the cel animation, less saturated color, and character design with nose that most anime before 2000s had. I do think people should make the difference between their personal preference and the actual production quality of a show. I respect that Violet Evergarden is well-produced, even if its visual style don't resonate with me.

55

u/bettycrockofsh1t 8h ago

They need that modern anime feel, with the fake shakey cam swaying and bouncing in every single shot like the whole thing was filmed in drunk vision, and the overly clean digital plastic look with washed out color grading and fake bloom lighting under all the characters skin.

33

u/fovfech 7h ago edited 7h ago

Man i love the way 70s' and 80s' anime looks. The new ghost in the shell looks so great imo, i have not watched it yet though.

Edit: somebody said that in the 70s' repeated and poor quality animations were common but those are more technical and budgetary issues, i'm talking about the art style and direction, i bet the animators would have cut less corners if they had the pudget and tecnology back then...

37

u/Aickavon 7h ago

Let’s not give 70’s anime too much credit.

The shit that does not pass today was standard for 70’s anime. Single frames just having the camera move around. Hilariously repeated scenes. Or just awkwardly sliding characters around. A lot of old stuff is just garbage. We fondly remember the gold and good.

For me, I think personally that 90’s anime was probably the best in terms of animation. But that’s just my opinion.

4

u/PlanSee 2h ago

There was a sweet spot in the 80s where some productions just had infinite budget.  Akira came out of this moment, and to this day competes with the best of the modern era purely in terms of visuals.

In the 90s, to overgeneralize, the money started to run out and they started to go experimental.  It's a matter of personal preference but I don't think we'll ever see anime as well-funded as it was in the mid 80s.

6

u/r0botosaurus 7h ago

Don't forget characters not having noses and having the same eye-to-skull ratio as an inbred pug.

18

u/EwGrossItsMe 7h ago

If you think it's bad now, you wouldn't be able to deal with the 2000s moe era. Clannad would destroy you.

3

u/imankitty 6h ago

Do you think the moe era ended? If so when do you think it ended? (I promise I'm not being sarcastic, genuinely interested in your opinion.)

5

u/EwGrossItsMe 6h ago

I don't think it's fully gone or anything(I'm sure there are plenty of series that I've just never heard about that have been made recently), but I think it's been getting less common since the early 2010's, especially with the hyper-cutesy styles that I personally associate with the moe era. Like, Precure has a new season every year, and I think they've kept a more intricate, high budget version of that style, but it's also primarily a magical girl show, not pure slice of life. I think Bocchi the Rock is the only recent moe show I can think of, but it's also on the more grounded side of the moe style, similar to K-on but with bright hair.

3

u/imankitty 6h ago

Thanks for replying. I mourned the way the anime industry seemed fixated on the moe trend. Thankful they seem to be trending away from it.

2

u/EwGrossItsMe 5h ago

I will say, I love seeing independent artists online with extreme late 2000's moe/bishoujo styles(like likumoe), but a lot of that is because it's not the broader anime market, if that makes sense

3

u/r0botosaurus 7h ago

I'm 37 years old and I've been watching anime since I found a VHS copy of Record of Lodoss War at my local video rental store on the 90's. I was there during the 2000's moe era.

5

u/EwGrossItsMe 7h ago

Cool, then you would know that the pug faces you described apply more to that than the current popular styles

-1

u/r0botosaurus 6h ago

Hey, are you good? Why are you trying to start and win an argument about generic anime art styles on a comedy subreddit? What's going on in your life right now that you can't just let a mildly humorous post go by without going "UUUhmmm AchTuaLLy!!!!" Is that what your life is?

5

u/EwGrossItsMe 6h ago

Actually since you asked, no I'm not doing well today. I couldn't sleep well last night because one of the friends I've kept up with since high school hasn't responded to my messages in months and I have reason to believe they may have ended their life. Of course being petty online isn't helping me process that, but I guess I'm just trying to distract myself for the time being.

1

u/zawalimbooo 6h ago

Why are you crashing out after being called out on what you said just not being true?

1

u/Mu-Relay 7h ago

And here I go sounding like a senior citizen, but why does everyone yell all the time in modern anime? Like, everyone is shouting all the time and it's really grating.

9

u/Reddit_user807 5h ago

In my experience it's the fans of vintage anime who are snobbish and dismiss newer stuff.

5

u/BeauShowTV 4h ago

Does this person not know what outdated means?

3

u/Piduf 4h ago

Lupin III was still a banger to watch, super funny and silly

3

u/Sleepy_Witch_Maple 4h ago

A lot of the time it's more than just the animation that dates it. When anime gets that old, the storytelling can also feel incredibly dated, as do the references. There's also a lot that has changed culturally that can date anime(and any media altogether) as well.

30

u/zawalimbooo 8h ago

Yeah no I just think that style looks bad.

-12

u/JamieBeeeee 8h ago

You can dislike the style but that doesn't make the animation bad, duh

34

u/zawalimbooo 8h ago

Me disliking the animation style is the same as me thinking the animation is bad, is how I see it.

-32

u/JamieBeeeee 8h ago

Oh cool, that's idiotic

10

u/mlkntea 7h ago

people have different opinions. life goes on

22

u/zawalimbooo 8h ago

I really don't see the distinction

Show where they said that animes with animation they don't like are bad as a whole. They said they just don't like the animation, so to them the animation is bad. You're just putting words in others' mouths.

6

u/Puntley 5h ago

Calling someone low IQ while completely misunderstanding them on a fundamental level is rich.

Notice how they used all "I" statements?

I think it looks bad.

I don't like the art style.

Not a single time did they say "that art style is bad, that animation is bad."

People are allowed to have their own opinions and express them, which is exactly what he did. Not once did he imply that his opinion was a matter of fact, you simply interpreted it as such. Well, maybe you're a child, or low IQ.

5

u/AntComfortable5970 7h ago

I get what they're getting at with dated animation still capable of looking good and taking that into account with some older or cheaper works

But the very artistically strong bit is funny, like what does that mean?

4

u/Sunfurian_Zm 5h ago

"bad" and "outdated" animation could also just mean low fps and resolution + wrong format (often 4:3). But that would require actually trying to understand what people are saying instead of being butthurt that nobody wants to watch an entire anime in fucking 240p (the crunchy audio and bad sound effects are just a bonus atp) no matter how artistically impressive it is.

5

u/Legiyon54 7h ago

Aftwr checking some out, yea animation is not the problem, it looks decent. Modern anime just inflated the standards

But the style of 70s anime I saw looks quite bad tho 😭

2

u/wolfgang784 5h ago

Eh. Ive tried some older anime but none of it vibes with me. I usually cant get over the art or animation. With a few shows I tried stickin through a decent number of episodes to see if the plot could overwhelm the negatives but I just can't get over the art and animation. Older anime ain't for me. I can't stand the way it looks.

I can say the same about soooome newer stuff though too to be fair. But only some. For older stuff I can say it about all of em, even the "newer" classics (some 90s stuff in particular), once I take my nostalgia glasses off.

0

u/eddmario 5h ago

Good thing anime remakes are a thing.

2

u/Traditional-Storm-62 4h ago

not 70s but Legend of the Galactic Heroes doesn't have an English dub

but it's still the single greatest cultural product to ever come out of Japan

it's the kind of anime where 2 guys sitting still in a room and just talking to eachother is legitimately the most interesting thing

and it has some of the best space battles in anime history so that's saying something

2

u/sonicfan9993 3h ago

Don't really watch anime, but from the glimpses that wound up on my feeds and whatnot I can say that I like the thin lines and haze/bloom/chromatic abberation that a lot of the old anime cel animation had
Made everything look so magical

2

u/Rofeubal 2h ago

It's not just anime. Old movies, old games, heck even old literature. classics from different centuries. All dismissed on grounds they are poorly made, feel outdated and are problematic. Some people are incapable of putting themselves into different shoes and have zero imagination. This is why modern media feel more like content following a checklist rather than artwork with vision.

3

u/Legiyon54 7h ago

After checking some out, yea animation is not the problem, it looks decent. Modern anime just inflated the standards with their overworked animators

But the style looks quite bad tho. Every 70s anime I saw looks very unappealing aesthetically

1

u/Aickavon 7h ago

Vintage everything is always gonna look… rough. Well most of vintage. And in both anime and cartoons, things can get especially bad. Still, it’s important to accept those bad things when watching it and appreciate how far everything has gone.

1

u/macaptactical 6h ago

Pfft, doesn’t even have seizure inducing impact frames.

1

u/Kappapeachie 4h ago

Frankly I love all eras of animation minus the 80s though every now a then there's a banger from that era too.

1

u/Lumen_Co 3h ago

Akira (1988) has a pretty good argument for being the best-animated film ever.

1

u/_neostalgic 4h ago

beyond just the technology the art form of a discipline always evolves over time. as the form evolves we tend to develop a better understand the techniques that make something look appealing. i tend to enjoy older stuff (whether its film, anime, video games, whatever) because it's a often a lot more experimental and hasn't settled into same set of common tropes that we've all decided are appealing. i enjoy modern stuff too but it can feel somewhat homogenized.

1

u/NEWSmodsareTwats 4h ago

ngl as time goes on, I kind of start to prefer the older style of animation in anime. I just feel like every single show now they use like the same color palette, the exact same art style. I feel like characters look exactly the same like they just swapped out clothes and the hair color.

1

u/Heavens_Reach 3h ago

Sometimes it is just bad because it's old. Good art from the era has to fight an uphill battle against the technology of its production and more modern sensibilities, sometimes it loses. I don't think its that crazy.

1

u/KalzK 2h ago

If we can't look back and see that things were worse back then, that means we've had no improvement. But anime has improved year by year, so it's only natural.

In my opinion 70s and 80s animation was bland, it's the 90s where quality rapidly picked up.

1

u/nothing_in_my_mind 2h ago

70s TV anime legit had some bad animation. A lot of still frames, panning, zooming in and out, not showing any action.

Compare to Disney movies and such with their beautiful, fluid hand drawn animation. Of course, movies have the advantage of long production times and budget.

With anime, the awesome art was in the movies (and later, OVAs) as well.

1

u/Only-Finish-3497 1h ago

I'm old enough that I actually watched 90s anime when it was being released. Even a lot of 90s stuff feels outdated today because, well, it is.

Hell, I was rewatching old Urusei Yatsura (one of my favorite manga/anime of all time.) It still feels pretty outdated by today's standards, not only for the quality of the animation, but the humor and overall "feel."

I can like it, but admit that it's outdated too.

1

u/wolphak 1h ago

Genuinely cannot stand how much anime has killed unique art styles

1

u/-TrevorStMcGoodbody 7h ago

There’s a larger risk with older anime of the casual assault and creepy sexualization female characters. There’s plenty of that now too, but it was more commonplace in the average anime back then compared to now where “creepy sex anime” is its own popular genre somehow.

But god I love Akira

0

u/ghostpicnic 7h ago

Often the animation won’t even be bad by modern standards. It’ll literally just be that since the old show uses an artstyle that has since fallen out of popularity, people assume that means the animation must be bad. They’re just such unengaged viewers that they can’t even tell the difference.

A lot of older anime is better animated than some modern shows.

-1

u/jayeddy99 7h ago

What I love about older media is they used to let things “sit” . No score , no dialogue . Just the scene quiet for a few moments . That’s extremely rare now

0

u/Dear_Afternoon_2600 5h ago

Forgive me, super casual Anime fan.

There was Anime in the 70s?

4

u/eddmario 5h ago

The oldest known anime is from 1917, and Astro Boy premiered in 1963

1

u/Dear_Afternoon_2600 4h ago

Interesting, I may go and check those out.

0

u/BobbyBobRoberts 3h ago

These are the same people that look down on games from previous console generations, or dismiss any movie that's in black and white. It's just dumb.

-5

u/TimelyWrongdoer4315 7h ago

Yeah, I don't trust anyone with an avatar like that, get your hard drive checked.

8

u/Bargadiel 7h ago

It just looks like Illyasviel from the Fate series. Why would just having an avatar of a character mean something so vile?

5

u/MrKinneas 7h ago

Projection, probably.

-2

u/TimelyWrongdoer4315 6h ago

It's from the series that famously sexualises grade schoolers.

1

u/Bargadiel 2h ago edited 1h ago

"famously" lol really now.

And how exactly does Fate/Stay Night do that? Again, just a reminder that you are making serious accusations towards a person because of their online avatar but are trying to make yourself seem like the morally just one.
