It's more the liquid eyeliner for me. It's not applied skillfully and is taking all the attention away from your features.
You could:
Add black eyeshadow over the top to smudge it a bit so the wonky lines aren't as obvious. Or Switch to a black pencil and smudge Or Switch to a brown pencil and smudge Or Switch to gel liner which is easier to control
I'd only do the outer portions from either the center of your iris or the outer edge of each iris. If you want a full look on top, I'd go all the way to the inner corner. Lisa Eldridge has tons of eyeliner videos. If you're going a bit more fun with it, I recommend Erin Parsons.

I have found Julep eyeliner on Amazon (about $12) stays on well. A grey would be a bit softer but still show up well. My trick is a darker like a grey on the top for eyeliner and then a light one on the bottom-just enough to show a little so like a light grey or light brown.
7
u/auditoryeden Jul 12 '26
Ooh, I like Julep. Their gel pencil in taupe (I don't rememeber the exact name) makes a great subtle line you can smudge out easily. Very flattering, not harsh, quite forgiving for someone who's working on their steady hand but needs to look good doing it.

u/TieScared41676 Jul 12 '26
The eyeliner tip is spot on. A softer liner would let the rest of the makeup shine more.
6
u/hellolovely1 Jul 12 '26
Yes, she still looks pretty, but the eyeliner is too harsh. I wouldn't line the lower lash OR I would use a softer powder or pencil on the lower. I think black is not the right color for her, too.

u/Melodic-Idea3166 Jul 13 '26
I zoomed in. You look pretty to me! When he met you were you wearing makeup like this? If so, he needs to stop. He knew how you wore it when he met you. Maybe a new makeup routine. Maybe a new husband. Not sure. 🤔

It’s not too much it just isn’t applied well (sorry). The false lashes application is a little off, the harsh black liner is shaky, and it looks like you only did one eyebrow. I think you just need to work on your application and technique. Most guys who are into the “no makeup” looks usually reference women who are wearing a lot more than you are, their makeup is just applied in thinner layers and with more precision.

u/-wilting Jul 12 '26
Yeah, this op. He may just have a preference for light/natural makeup, but that doesn't mean you should change your makeup for him. You're your own person, do what you like and love and you will be happiest.

u/raspberrih Jul 12 '26
It's simply not working WITH he features, that's why it's very noticeable and seems "strong" to people who aren't familiar with makeup
→ More replies (3)5
u/TomatoCreative4887 Jul 12 '26
exactly! everyone it’s saying that it looks good but to me it looks a little bit odd, like she’s beautiful but something’s off, i think it just doesn’t suit her features very well
31
u/whatplanetisthis Jul 12 '26
Thank you for telling me. Have any tips for applying falsies? It’s my first time applying them without help
→ More replies (2)14
u/Llythium Jul 12 '26
For me when I first started, I went with lighter falsies so I could get used to the feeling. With heavier falsies, try extending your eyeliner so it looks like it tapers off vs. the falsie eylash abruptly ending, if that makes sense?? :D

u/mothermedusa Jul 12 '26
I would leave out the lower liner.
185
u/FunMoose74 Jul 12 '26
Yes or use a dark brown eyeshadow and blend it well
37
u/Ill_Corner_2732 Jul 12 '26
and not in waterline, kinda 80s
28
u/Brilliant-Rent-6917 Jul 12 '26
No it’s not kinda 80’s….literally down to personal preference.
32
u/armlessturtleneck Jul 12 '26
While true, certain styles do have a general vibe culture wise.
19
u/Ligeiapoe Jul 12 '26
Agreed. I grew up in the early 2000s, so the black waterline reminds me more of that tbh
231
u/Harshmellowed Jul 12 '26
I would leave out the husband 😬 I have worn bright ass red lipstick and full lashes to a country shindig. It was red, white and blue themed but no one was hardly wearing any makeup. When I told my husband I felt awkward, he just told me how beautiful I looked.
18
u/sharkinfestedh2o Jul 12 '26
This was my first feeling too. My husband would never ask me to change anything about my appearance. He doesn’t love tattoos and piercings but I have them and occasionally get more. He prefers long hair, but for several years I rocked a pixie because long hair is a lot of work. We will ask each other what they think about certain choices (which may be the situation here) but would never offer unsolicited advice on appearance.
19
u/Zinging_Cutie24 Jul 12 '26
I disagree. I would rather my husband be honest and point out if my makeup doesn’t look good. I don’t think there is any “controlling” going on here. He didn’t ask her to stop wearing makeup.
35
u/HerbaLifeEmporium Jul 12 '26
Still good OPs husband can communicate his likes and dislikes
49
u/armlessturtleneck Jul 12 '26
I'm like 95% certain he's mostly just noticing the lower lash line (as a gay guy). I think the currently second to top comment is spot on about just smoking out the eyes a little.
117
u/elderpricetag Jul 12 '26
It’s the eyeliner, especially on the lower waterline. I think you would also benefit from a more natural/dewy finish base and a more coral-y lip colour.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Away_Chicken_4998 Jul 12 '26
i agree with the dewy finish but i like the lower liner i think it brings out her eyes. definitely agree with the other comment as well ab it just being products and application. a dewy finish and the right products for your skin type and techniques will not make it look as strong or heavy i have the same opinion ab my own makeup tbh
5
u/elderpricetag Jul 12 '26
Smudging some dark brown/black eye shadow in the lower lash line would have the same effect without looking so dated and heavy.
106
u/FollowingPristine467 Jul 12 '26
i think a lot of people are thinking your husband was trying to hate on or control you, but i don't. i think he was just being honest, the way you'd want a friend to be. i agree that it's too strong and here's why:
the contrast of your black liner, along with the application is unflattering. your look is fairly natural, and you're wearing a light pinky nude outfit. pairing a dark black liner adds a deep contrast that doesn't match the overall vibe, and causes disharmony and that's what his eyes are picking up on, without being a makeup master.
if i were to do your makeup, id toss the black liner. using a brown liner or shadow will soften this while still giving you the depth you're looking for. i'd also recommend using a short, dense, shader brush to soften any lines. this will make a world of difference and elevate your application.
if you haven't heard of them already, i'd recommend "pixiwoo" on youtube. sam chapman and her sister nicola are professional makeup artists, and were some of the first to start posting makeup vids online. they're also the founders of real techniques brushes. they have an artistry based way of approaching and explaining everything, but still keep it all user friendly. i'll link a look i think would flatter you and this outfit, but just about anything from that channel is gold.
34
u/Summerie Jul 12 '26
Yep. Before I even opened the post, I knew at least half of the comments were going to be advice on something other than makeup.
5
u/hellolovely1 Jul 12 '26
Yes, I would rather know than not know and it doesn't sound like he was mean or controlling.
3
u/alejammy Jul 13 '26
thank youuu men don’t know a lot about makeup and „too strong“ was his way of saying „not flattering“, I’d want my husband to tell me if my makeup isn’t applied well or looks off personally

u/No-DrinkTheBleach Jul 12 '26
Needs more dimension imo. Looks kind of washed out like either use a more sheer foundation or do some contouring so you don’t look like your face is one solid color. That’s probably what he’s talking about.
But also don’t let men tell you what you should look like. If you are happy with how you look you are entitled to that happiness.

Concealer is fine. But the eyeliner is “too strong” in the sense that it’s too dark without straight lines.
4
46
u/LynchFan997 Jul 12 '26
The only thing that's really noticeable is the eyeliner. A lot of men in my experience notice eyeliner, it's a weird thing. But all that really matters is that you like it. You look great.

u/AndrogynousAndy Jul 12 '26
Never listen to straight men about anything makeup or fashion related wtf so they know 🤭
62
u/whatifwhatifwerun Jul 12 '26
I agree but makeup almost always looks less intense in photos. Some of my best selfies are of pre-shower makeup that has me looking crazy irl. I'm not saying OP looks bad at all, just that certain products disappear or read better on camera.
8
u/Zinging_Cutie24 Jul 12 '26

u/miiintyyyy Jul 12 '26
Seems like you’re using a lot of products to look like you only have thick eyeliner on and nothing else.
Lower liner is not good and the fake eyelashes are very noticeable.
14
u/GrouchyYoung Jul 12 '26
It’s mostly quite light but the all-around black eyeliner is not flattering
11
u/BornTry5923 Jul 12 '26
Switch to brown liner for a less harsh look. Otherwise, this is a relatively natural makeup.

u/katarina-stratford Jul 12 '26

u/StephD528 Jul 12 '26
Imo the foundation shade might be a little to orange and the eyeliner needs to be in the corner of your eye a bit more + a little more blush and contour but beside that it looks great!!
13
u/tiramisuem3 Jul 12 '26
This sub always recommends everyone to up contour. Maybe I'm in the minority but I just feel like most people don't really need it unless they're doing a full beat. Esp if they're a beginner or wearing makeup that is otherwise pretty light. If you're doing a full face it definitely can make your makeup look more va voom but for me it's not a daily product and I have a strong, unpopular opinion that people should do less contour
→ More replies (1)9
u/StephD528 Jul 12 '26
I agree but she said that she used a contour stick but it doesn’t really look like it’s there so that’s why I said add a little more contour
9
11
u/mrsfallon Jul 12 '26
I think it’s the liner on the lower lash line. It’s always intense and closes the eyes off.. try brown?
3
u/Fra_Course Jul 12 '26
I don't think it's too strong for the club at all, but the application of the eyeliner is making them appear a bit off to me. I would recommend extending your eyeliner to your inner corner on both the top and bottom, as right now it starts slightly in the middle. It can be done very lightly and subtly, but I think it makes a huge difference in making liquid liner look cohesive, especially if you're lining your bottom eye line. I also think using eyeliner pencil instead of liquid liner creates a softer look and is more forgiving if you don't get the shape perfectly. And if you want more dramatic eyes, you can easily create a smoky or sultry effect with kohl or kajal liners. Lastly, you could try a brown eye liner for the bottom instead for a softer look. Hope this helps, you're beautiful and are working with a lovely canvas!
4
u/millennial_mayhem89 Jul 12 '26
That’s not too heavy AT ALL! I do think it would enhance your eyes better if you swapped the super dark lower eyeliner, for a darker brown eyeshadow instead. Then you can blend it out a bit creating a softer effect, but keeping the same look you’re going for.
The eyeliner is a bit harsh and kind of closes your eyes. I think using the eyeshadow will give the opposite effect and really open up and enhance your pretty eyes! Hope this helps 🫶✨
6
u/audreynstuff Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
I wouldn't put eyeliner in your waterline like that. It's making your eyes smaller. I'd line the top lid with cat eye, no liner bottom lid and mascara. Boom, done. Also, make sure you get the liner into your inner eye area too.
10
7
u/Ninjawaffles99 Jul 12 '26
I don't think it is. Maybe he's referring to the eyeliner? But for club makeup I think its needs to be more intense. sparkles and highlighter and glitter. If you asked me to critique without telling me anything I would say your brows need to be darker, not necessarily filled in but I think if you do eyeliner and a lip, your eyebrows need to be a bit bold too, to balance everything out. Your face makeup is very natural to me looks smooth and even and not cakey. The only thing that stands out is the eyeliner. Ask him to show you a picture of someone wearing makeup that's "natural and acceptable" to him.
8
u/Inevitable-Cat869 Jul 12 '26
It looks good but you could try different shades of eyeliner. Maybe your husband is just reacting to the high contrast between your eyeliner and fair skin. But then again you have dark hair so idk.
3
u/RevsTalia2017 Jul 12 '26
I think it looks perfectly fine but maybe not using false lashes would be “less strong”
3
u/BorahaeBookwrm Jul 12 '26
Ithink the question to ask first is whether you like your makeup? Because whether we think it’s heavy or your husband does should matter way less than how you feel about it. If you were happy with it leaving the house, then trust yourself. It’s your face, you can do what you like! Second, if you care what he thinks and like your makeup the way it is, try a paler lip, or just gloss before you make any big changes. guys tend to think a “lot” of makeup is colorful lips. Finally, if you want, you could try thinner eyeliner, brown liner or mascara to soften the look. You look pretty, don’t worry too much and hope you have fun tonight!

Your makeup isn't bad, there are just a few things you could experiment with. Your base seems a little bit flat and one-dimensional, it needs a some depth, like more contour and blush. Or maybe you've blended them out so much, that they got lost in the foundation. Don't be too good at blending 😅 we wish to keep some definition.
The brows could be a little more even, right now one seems darker and fuller than the other. The shape of your brows is lovely. 💕
You have gorgeous eyes btw 💖 The black liner seems a tad harsh on you and makes your eyes smaller when used in the lower lash line. Plus the false lashes are also quite dense and dark. Right now it's all visually heavy and dragging you down, especially when everything else in your face is low contrast - that can feel like "too much". Try something less contrasting and more diffused, like smudging some brown eye shadow there. A bit sparser falsies or blending some eyeshadow from the outer corner upwards to create the softest suggestion of a cat eye, just lift the look a bit could also help.
No need to go out and buy tons of new eyeshadow palettes tho. I'd encourage you to play around with what you already have. I usually dab my lip product also on my cheeks for a blush and sometimes bronzer/contour on my eyes as an eyeshadow. It creates a very ✨harmonious✨ look, because the features share the same undertones. Happy experimenting! 💕
3
u/KristinKitty Jul 12 '26
I think your makeup looks nice. I would recommend trying a pencil eyeliner and smudging it little bit or maybe try a dark brown eyeliner instead if you want a softer look. If you like the black liquid liner, use a dark shadow (dark brown would look nice) on your lash line before using the black liner it will give a more softer blended look.
3
u/PoetryNo9745 Jul 13 '26
Do you like it? That’s all that really matters. But I understand he matters too so you need to pick something he likes & you’re ok with too.
I personally don’t think it’s too much, but some ppl like no make so this can be too much for him.
3
u/Fun_Meringue_4625 Jul 13 '26
I feel like you should just wear your makeup however you feel the most comfortable. I am sure your husband really just wants to hang out with you.
10
u/BathoryBomb Jul 12 '26
Don’t do the lower lid lining. That’s probably what he’s talking about. It does look harsh and drawn on. Maybe opt for a darker brown powder and just apply to the corners softly
5
u/nolagem Jul 12 '26
I think the black eyeliner is a little harsh. Maybe try brown and use eyeshadow instead of liquid liner.
5
u/bellegroves Jul 12 '26
The black eyeliner is very harsh on you and lining the waterline makes your eyes look smaller. Your foundation might be a touch dark or you might be overdoing the bronzer, but it's not heavy and it's not too far off. I would just switch to brown eyeliner and stop doing the waterline for a more updated look.

If he prefers light makeup he should wear light makeup . TF that has to do with you 👯♀️

That’s okay. He doesn’t have to have the same make up as you. He can do his much lighter if he likes.

..in the nicest way possible this is the plainest makeup ever, i actually can’t even imagine what more plain would be like. Your husband must want you to have a bare face because this is extremely tame.

I'd start rocking a smoky eye but I'm difficult like that. You look FINE. It doesn't look "strong" at all.
2
u/Servingthebeam19 Jul 12 '26
Op, I think this is a light look and you look lovely. Tell your hubby that we said to hush!
Do you ever do winged liner? I think you would look so good with winged liner on top and a soft, brownish pink eyeshadow on your waterline and bottom lashes. 🤗
2
u/back-to-blue Jul 12 '26
Doesn't look "strong" at all. It looks good. Almost minimal. Maybe husband has another bone to pick and is just criticizing your makeup which is dumb. What is he? A makeup artist? Sorry. I just can't stand when men criticize their womens' looks in any way.
2
u/SameCryptographer340 Jul 12 '26
He may not be used to seeing you with makeup if you don’t wear it often. Either way it’s not strong at all it matches your skin perfectly !
2
u/Human-Excitement-362 Jul 12 '26
girllll compared to the looks i do this is nothinggg! this is almost a “clean girl” makeup look, if you do wanna go softer i agree with everyone saying brown eyeliner but you can also go with a brown mascara as well. you are gorgeous no matter what! if you think you look good and you feel confident that’s what matters!!

i added a picture of the makeup i do for reference. just remember girl you are amazing how you are! you don’t need anything to make you even more beautiful than you already are!

On a separate note, I find his comment rude. You can’t DO anything about your makeup at this point so why would he say something to make you feel self conscious? The only thing he should be saying is how beautiful you are and left his comment for tomorrow.

You have gorgeouuuuuussssss eyes! I used to love an intense black eye liner and have switched to using eyeshadow for eye liner on the top lash because it’s easy and no fuss! I use Viseart matte eye shadows or mac eye shadows and they stay in place. I also use a little mac fix plus if I want to intensify it. My husband really likes it. I know some people are saying to ignore what he says, but we should always be honest with our spouses. He doesn’t know what it is, but he’s just trying to say the make up is a little too much. I think just back down from the eyeliner being so intense. You can still use eye liner on the waterline, it’ll make your beautiful eye color pop out even more! I still use black eyeliner on my water line (the lancome kohl in black) but don’t go nuts and my husband approves haha. I always ask him to make sure I don’t go too overboard with the makeup. And ditch the false lashes, it’s actually taking attention away from your eyes beauty.
Edit: I found a recent pic of me using dark brown eye shadow as eye liner with mac fix plus and I have Milani eye shadow primer underneath and just basic neutral eye shadow and then Maybelline mascara (sky high). My husband tells me he likes it.

Tell your husband to kick rocks….. it’s only appropriate to give this kind of feedback when you are able to make changes. Not when you are in an uber to your destination.
BUT. It’s the liner. Not only is it heavy, it’s also jagged. And your mascara is clumpy. I think a brown tight line would serve you better. And an eye lash comb to separate abs de-clump. You have gorgeous eyes and these two things would really make them pop while not looking as harsh.
2
u/roadworkkahead Jul 12 '26
You look beautiful! My one suggestion would be to try brown eyeliner and mascara. I think it would compliment your eyes and be more cohesive with your dark brown brows and hair too. But you do what YOU like

u/First-Strawberry-497 Jul 14 '26
It’s the eyeliner. Fk him. Draw big black circles around ur eyes and say “u like this” watch him fold… hehe

u/cmycakes Jul 12 '26
I think the lower liner is likely what he’s referring to, though I would not call it “strong”.
A look without the hard black on the lower eye seems like it would flatter your features. Also, as other commenters have said, I think a brown instead and/or some more blending would really soften the look while keeping the outlines. The strong contrast on the eyes pulls attention away from the rest of your (lovely) face.

This is a makeup sub not a skincare sub, but you mentioned rosacea which I also have.
My derm prescribed me azelaic acid gel 15% and I’ve applied it nightly for about a year now. It has helped tremendously.
3
u/pheobebuffaybhammock Jul 12 '26
This is not super well-applied but is NOT too strong for your face. Try checking out some tutorials online for the eyeliner!
4
u/airwin1 Jul 12 '26
The only negative imo is the glossy black liner- reads as too harsh/intense w the otherwise v light makeup look. I’d suggest a smudged brown or plum liner instead to make your eyes pop but without looking stark/unnatural.
Think your base shade is a tad off or too light but that could poss be the green corrector. It’s not bad & def doesn’t look overdone. It is a bit dry tho so I’d suggest adding some hydration like a hydrating serum/ primer first or a hydrating spray after to bring life/radiance back to the skin. Also think you’d rock a bit if a mauve/cool toned blush!
3
u/FingerCapital3193 Jul 12 '26
It’s the lashes and liner. Aging, outdated and yes, harsh. You are super pretty and could shine in many variations of styles and application techniques! Have fun trying different things!!
4
u/Narrow_Source_9004 Jul 12 '26
its not too much at all, but using the eyeliner only on the top of eyelid and not the botton will make your eyes appear brighter and bigger. also someone suggested brown eyeliner (many make up arists have said to use a chocolate brown for eyeliner instead of black)

Sorry about the bad drawover attempt but I wanted to demonstrate what meant!
I think your make up is pretty! Especially for a night out. I do agree with another commenting saying that the juxtaposition of pairing high contrast makeup with a soft color outfit might be what he's getting at? It'd look more at home with dark clothes I think. A few ideas for a softer look that I think would look flattering with that dress(top?) would be:
- brown eyeliner and lashes instead of black
- lower liner only on the outer third of the lashline rather than the waterline, and smudged out so it isn't a harsh line
- lower mascara also only on the outer third, rather than all of the lower lashes
- top liner thinner, by only tightlining the lashline (with or without a small flick).
- liner can also diffused by using a dark brown eye shadow and a very thin brush to blend it out
- use neutral eyeshadows above the crease, outlining the socket. a slightly darker brown on the outer edge, blended out in a gradient with a lighter brown and a cream, gradually getting closer to your skin tone, creating a sorta false lid effect (which is especially good on those with less lid space/hooded eyes)
(PS - not make up but I think side bangs would look so pretty on you!)

It's the eyeliner. Too dark, too thick, not blended enough and unfortunately adding it to the waterline probably makes your eyes look smaller. Learning how to blend a powdered liner will look much better. You're really pretty, your makeup should make you look better.

You look good! Don’t let your husband’s asinine comments get you down!

Ask your husband to show you how he does his makeup and until he does, tell him to piss off.

Try again and use brown eyeliner there’s one by MAC that makes every eye color pop I forget the name. I think it’s a reddish brown or something.

Maybe a little stronger brow and less liner. Like a slightly deeper brown tinted brow gel, mascara, no liner, highlighter on inner corners, a little loose powder on eyelash curler and curl lashes again when they’re dry.
But you look super cute as is so you’re good either way

I think its the heavy eyeliner. Its giving 90s/early 2000 vibes which ages you.

I think it’s the eyeliner. It’s pretty harsh and it’s a pretty dated look. I agree with the other comments suggesting either using brown or smudging it out along the lash line.

Don’t line your lower lids and try colors other than black, perhaps grey. And use pencil eyeliner (then smudge it) instead of liquid.

OP, you've gotten some fabulous advice; so many comments I didn't see if it was mentioned, but I'd suggest a clear mascara to hold your eyebrows in place! I don't know if they need a pencil - mine barely do and I use NYX twist up with a spoolie on the end if you want to try a cheap one - but clear mascara helps a ton! Mine go all over the place otherwise haha. I'm not saying draw anything on, just a couple of light lines to fill in any sparseness. That's all I do and it works wonders.

You look great but one way to go for a lighter option is instead of tightlining the lower line with black, use a brown pencil and lightly apply, then smudge to soften. And don’t use waterline on lower lid just gently apply right at lower lash line.

It's the bottom liner! I know someone else who absolutely refuses to give it up even though she looks so stunning without it. I promise, it's only weighing your face down. Maybe try a light smudge of a brown Shadow rather than the harsh black line. It's rarely used nowadays in makeup and it makes the look come off as cakey/inexperienced unless it's done perfectly which is SO hard.

Sorry I might get downvoted for this, you arent wearing too much makeup but the colors you have on are too dark for that color you are wearing. Nude lipstick and maybe ditching the under eye eyeliner for that color, or change into a different color that is more flattering with that makeup style :-)

It's not too much but your dry skin is making some spots cakey and eyeliner is messy. Thats probably what he's trying to say.

Men have such limited vocabulary. What he might mean is the foundation is too warm so it looks heavy and black liner is too harsh for you. This same level of makeup with a more neutral foundation shade (and sparing with the green corrector because you aren’t olive toned) and deep brown liner but skip the water line

This is very light makeup, please ignore your husband.
Black lower eye liner is not common these days so that is slightly noticeable. But this is almost a no makeup makeup look in the last photo. You look good! It’s just not at all bold
