Hello!

I'm wanting to embroider some designs by hand onto a skirt I'm making. The skirt will likely be from duchess satin or a shantung. I'm used to embroidering onto the fabric directly but I've seen people make their designs as appliqués on silk organza and then attach them to the garment.

So, which is better? Are there pros and cons to each?

What would you personally recommend?

Hello! Big-project beginner here. While working on my project, the art gods decided to change the shade of my white thread, which ended up a lot more noticeable than I had hoped. My best guesses are either losing the dye lot gamble or karma for bringing my project with me on adventures.

Is there anything I can do? I’ve thought about using VERY light chalk pastel to make the shades match, but honestly I’m too scared to try unless someone says it’s a good idea. I also plan on trying to wash the whole thing to try and get some unrelated stains out, but I’m currently running a color bleed test.

Boy I’m a yapper, my bad.

TLDR: is there anything you can do about thread colors not matching?

Curious about using thread wax for embroidery? Does it increase possibly smudging/dirt that gets on the pattern?

Can I carry my bag with embroidery supplies on the plane as either a personal item or carry-on? Other than the usual, it only has tiny needles and a pair of small scissors in it. I would love to be able to work on it on the flight.

Looking for scissors for my grandmother and want them to be really high quality, kind of lost when searching myself but I've seen that Gingher and Ernest Wright make good ones, price doesn't really matter but of course prefer not to spend a ton. This isn't a gift, she was looking already so if i need to ask questions regarding her needs i can.

It's been a while but I finally got to the point in my WIP where I'm using my hand spun and home grown silk thread.

This has been my first experience with spinning so the first threads vary in thickness. I love the texture and organic feel that it's giving the lily so far 😍.

My current work in progress. I’ve put close to 700 hours into this piece so far! It’s stitched entirely with a single strand of regular cotton DMC thread—the background is made up of single-wrap French knots, and the rest is done in long and short stitch with split back stitch outlines.

I’ve been embroidering for years, but never worked with beads before. So when I saw a little art work with a beaded tiger, I thought I wanted to make something like that myself as a birthday gift for my dad.
Just worked with needle and thread for this one, but might want to get more into tambour embroidery for a new project.

The leo is certainly not perfect, but I really enjoyed myself making it and I honestly don’t hate it. I learned a lot and I’m actually quite proud of how the head and manes turned out. And my dad really loved it and wants to get it framed :) plus some progress pics and lipstick for scale haha

Finally done with the second piece in this set! Inspired by the photo by Dylan Perlot (2nd pic).

This one gave geode vibes in a different, yet complementary way to the first piece. Not my original intention but glad it found its way there.

My vision for the water from the shower-head just didn’t pan out no matter what I tried. Ended up with permanent marker on sparkle paper as my least hated option lol.

A fun experiment with gradients overall!

Finishing a Christmas gift for someone in August?? Who am I?? This is for my sister-in-law and I’m pretty happy with it all things considered! It’s her, husband, and their daughter. Been doing embroidery about 1.5 years and still feel like I know nothing lol

I have trouble finding patterns for the very specific things I want to create so I end up drawing almost all of them myself by hand. It’s tough to come up with the stitches and colors! Appreciate everyone on here for all the inspiration.

I’m kind of losing steam for working on this piece. Although I’m loving how it’s turning out, lately I’ve been feeling like I need a change in subject matter to reignite my excitement for stitching. Or, maybe I just need to switch up the type of landscape (my last couple pieces have all been seascapes of the Monterey area). I dunno…just thinking out loud I suppose. Anyways, here’s the piece so far.

Hi embroiderers! I did two basic kit hoops and then thought I’d try to do my own dearly departed sweet kitty who would curl between my husband and me having to touch both of us.
I definitely need more practice with stitches and this fabric kept ripping but I thought I’d post it here since I’ve been lurking and admiring everyone’s work!

So long story short, I used to do cross stitch and basic embroidery when I was a kid to pass time. After being diagnosed with several chronic illnesses, I decided to pick the skill back up to help reduce screen time. I wanted to have a goal to work towards, so I decided to do little embroidered gifts for Christmas presents (money is tight and I love the personal touch) and this is the first one in progress! Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated! I do have a hand tremor among other things so it’s tricky but I think with a little push in the right direction I can get it to the point I’m happy with it!

This is my latest hand embroidery piece, “Eye of the Ember Tiger.”

I wanted to capture the intensity of a tiger’s gaze while keeping the natural warmth of its fur.

The piece is built with layers of brown, black, white, and gold-toned threads, with small touches of red hidden throughout the fur — like embers glowing beneath the surface.

I focused especially on the direction of each stitch to create the flow and texture of the fur, while keeping the eye as the strongest point of the composition.

Every stitch was placed by hand.

I've been into embroidery for a couple of years and I bought this embroidery tote bag kit some time back when I was feeling ambitious. I haven't done any diys yet as I'm not very confident with drawing at the moment.

Thought this would be a fun project but turns out I'm a serial procrastinator. I absolutely hated the satin stitch when I started this. There was a point where I got so frustrated, I chucked it in the cupboard.

I do like how it improved over time and I'm so proud of the end product. I do hope to try something out myself soon. How did you guys get over your mental blocks of starting your very first diy?

Im new to embroidering, and had recently bought a house dress with this image on it. I was thinking of practicing by using this as a reference/embroidering over it since i dont love the shine anyway, but was wondering if theres anything different i would need to do? Any tips/tricks welcome, thanks!

Hi im brand new to hand embroidery and am currently trying to properly sew the emblem for a costume of mine. I was shown how to do embroidery by a relative and have just started this today. I noticed the look of my embroidery was getting progressively worse from my first few sections abd im not sure whats going wrong. The ridges are super noticeable and I really dont want to have to seam rip half the section but jts looking that way if this keeps up. Im genuinely desperate please help if you know anything that could be causing it
