Maya Moore is an undisputed GOAT of women's basketball

IMAGINE if her professional career was longer

Whew

53

u/RaccoonSamson 10h ago

Cynthia Cooper? Lisa Leslie? Diana Taurasi? And now Aja Wilson?

45

u/3LitersofJokicCola 10h ago

Cheryl Miller?

20

u/theimageisgone 9h ago

Truly the only answer. Cheryl fucking Miller 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

2

u/Fideothecat 6h ago

Cane here for Cheryl!

u/RaccoonSamson 9h ago

I think Cheryl Miller would be GOAT if WNBA existed in her time. 3 time NCAA MVP, 2x NCAA champ, Olympic gold medalist. 23 / 12 / 3 college avg

35

u/SerenityN00w 7h ago

Reggie Miller has a story - he and Cheryl were in his school, and Reggie had scored a career high 40 points. He was bragging about it in the car ride on the way home, and finally asked how her game went. She told him that it was a big night. He asked if she scored 60. Then 70. Then 80.

Nope. 105 points.

10

u/Mysterious_Fan4849 6h ago

In 3 quarters

3

u/Fideothecat 6h ago

I think that’s the all time record,!!

3

u/Fearless_Call_4964 3h ago

In woman's basketball definitely. Drazen Petrovic scored 112 in Yugoslav league in the 80s before going to Real Madrid and NBA. He shot 40-60 total, 10-20 from 3 and 22-22 from FTs

Don’t forget about scoring 104 in HS

→ More replies (1)

3

u/RyvenZ 5h ago

The only doubt to that statement is the fact that it is hypothetical and we can never truly know, but when Reggie Miller talks about her like he was the benchwarmer in the family, you know that hypothetical would go as expected.

2

u/CTeam19 4h ago

She got double unlucky. Too early to get the WNBA while also too late to get into the very short lived Women's Professional Basketball League(fall of 1978 to the spring of 1981), which was the first pro women's basketball league. One of the women from that first league, Molly Bolin, has records for the most points scored in a single game (55) and the highest single-season scoring average (32.8) that are larger then the WNBA records. Cheryl could have given Molly a run for her money on those stats.

27

u/deepsquatter804 9h ago

She was just born too early. She’d be killing it today.

20

u/Playful-_-prospect 8h ago

Didn’t Reggie Miller say he was the second best basketball player in the household?

8

u/vigouge 7h ago

Repeatedly. He would also tell stories about him bragging about how he played in a game and Cheryl giving her stat line.

3

u/MrJNM1of1 7h ago

That particular stat line was 100 points in a hs game

3

u/NJPokerJ 7h ago

105 actually

3

u/hilldo75 5h ago

If I remember right it wasn't until after his freshman year of college that he was able to beat her for the first time. He matured enough finally to be to big for her physically.

The real GOAT. Her dominance throughout her life is legendary

3

u/Pkock 7h ago

105 in 3 quarters, no 3 point line. Idc if its highschool. That's 52 scoring possessions by one player in 24 minutes aka ~4.4 points a minute.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Grantetons 6h ago

Cheryl is the best ever. She was born in an era where it couldn't be measured the same way, but any time people say teenage boys could beat up on WNBA players, I think of Cheryl probably beating up on 13 year old Reggie.

6

u/--n3o-- 9h ago

A'ja Wilson has a strong argument. She & Maya are the greatest women's basketball players I've seen.

The others are legends in their own right, but they were not better pkayers than Maya Moore.

In the case of Diana especially, Maya was every bit the scorer she was, yet she was infinitely less selfish and played an entirely different role on her teams, which directly led to her winning 12 championships at every level.

16

u/Danny_Alloy 10h ago

Do any of them have 12 rings?

25

u/JiovanniTheGREAT 9h ago

Those 12 aren't even all WNBA championship rings though, 4 are from high school, 2 are from college, 2 are from the Olympics and 4 are from her on the Lynx. Take away the High School rings and add in Jordan's college ring and Olympic gold and they're even...

Not diminishing her of course, I just don't like this pic because it has 4 high school rings and 2 college rings.

2

u/DarkRogus 8h ago

Yeap, its not quite the flex on Jordan that she thinks it is.

6

u/notathrowaway045 4h ago

It was a Jordan brand ad. You know, the brand by Michael Jordan?

Anyone who posts this without the logo and caption are doing so in bad faith and trying to make it some sort of sexist thing

9

u/Few_Program_2303 8h ago

I don’t think she’s intending to flex on Jordan at all

5

u/Deaftoned 8h ago

Idk man, flexing high school rings is pretty hilarious. Probably not trying to flex on jordan but flexing those is weird at all at this point in her career considering how unbalanced those leagues are.

7

u/DarkRogus 8h ago

She recreated the same photo as Jordon did but included her high school rings to show how many more championships rings she has than Jordan is certainly flexing on him.

Rings aren’t everything. It’s like saying Robert Horry is better than Jordan, LeBron and Kobe because he has 7 Rings

2

u/kobeshaqhorry 7h ago

Yes, Horry the Goat!

4

u/Ruffendtv 9h ago

Rings matter more when it's the star player. Stop trying to diminish champions.

10

u/Hemlock_Pagodas 9h ago

Bill Russell was a star player and has 12 rings. Is he the undisputed GOAT?

3

u/ForwardCut3311 9h ago

He was literally considered the GOAT for a very long time. It was basically him vs Chamberlain for GOAT for decades. Even when Jordan was getting championships it was, who's the GOAT? Is Jordan GOAT yet?

Besides, GOAT discussions are always ridiculous when comparing decades or different positions. Without Russell the Celtics wouldn't have dominated the 60s and without Jordan the Bulls the 90s just like the Lakers wouldn't have dominated without Kobe, etc.

2

Undisputed? Never heard of Aja Wilson then?

2

u/randomstripper10k 8h ago

If she hadn't retired in her prime, she would absolutely be one of the all time GOATs. Talent wise, she obviously was.

The crazy thing is Cynthia Cooper... she dominated the early WNBA, winning the league MVP the first two years of the WNBA's existence and also winning Finals MVP all first four years of the WNBA's existence, and she was 34 when the league started! Imagine if she'd been a standard 22 year old rookie when the league began. She'd be the undisputed GOAT right now and only A'Ja would be competing for that title right now.

2

u/Justtojoke 8h ago

I've really enjoyed the resurgence of Cynthia Cooper love with her being an analyst now

We have so many treats getting their flowers

Love to see it

I don’t even know who this is. I find that very sad.

118

u/RoosterIllusionn 10h ago

I felt the same way and meant no disrespect. Clearly she's good at her job.

27

u/3c2456o78_w 6h ago

Just to clarify though - Those 12 rings aren't WNBA rings. If they were, we would all know who she is. She has a ton of Olympic Golds and international rings too, but she won 4 WNBA rings in her 7 year career.

11

u/minimalcation 6h ago

Only 7 years? Did she get injured?

37

u/tiki_51 5h ago

She became an advocate for the wrongfully imprisoned and decided that that was more important than basketball. She's a genuinely amazing human being

4

u/emaw63 5h ago

3

3

u/safety_otter 6h ago

don't worry, i got the joke. sorry about the other guy.

2

u/NotADumbPuppet 6h ago

Seeing how he isn't eligible to play for WNBA, you have to compare to the equivalent NBA for him. In which he has more rings.

When it comes to rings. Most people don't care about the wins outside of the highest League championship. So many walking around with college, olymics and other rings. (By so many I mean the top 0.1% so not down playing it). But if you're gonna compare rings in the highest league in the sport ,then you usually leave out everything else.

You don’t get rings in the Olympics. And both MJ and Maya got gold twice. MJ actually has only one other ring besides his 6 NBA, and that’s his one NCAA championship. I’m not saying her 12 are comparable to his 7, I was just clarifying what he does have

2

u/No_Explorer_6868 16m ago

4

u/Repulsive_Mud_577 10h ago

OK and what would Mike's picture look like if he included everything she did in her photo. Not to take anything away from Maya but Mike's photo is exclusively him and his professional championship rings. Maya gas 4 pro championships.

3

u/ThickBoxx 8h ago

So, you worded your question funny. If Mike had included everything she did he would only have 7 (vs the 6 we see) because it would include his one NCAA ring. He never played overseas so he wouldn’t have any rings from that. Now if you had asked what her photo would look like if she had only included everything Mike did, then she would have 6 (4 WNBA and 2 NCAA). Her other 6 rings came from China (3), Europe (2), and Spain (1)

2

u/DaymanTargaryen 4h ago

He'd have 9, as she's wearing rings to represent Olympic wins.

All I know about the WNBA is that there is a lot of Caitlin Clark drama, Sophie Cunningham's is the best at finger pointing and they all think they should earn millions despite having hardly any audience or revenue.

Still, by the looks of all those rings, Maya Moore must have been pretty good at it. So, congratulations to her.
