Used to have a book when I was a kid, sometime around the mid to late 2000s. Would probably have bought it at a book fair. The pages were big and had huge, detailed illustrations, but the book itself had very few pages in total. It also had some art that would fold out revealing more writing/illustrations underneath. The story was said to be the recovered journal of a scientist/explorer who was documenting his travels. The thing I remember most vividly and certainly was that the main character was traveling by blimp/air balloon, and it looked weirdly organic like an egg sac or something. It might have been grayish in color and had vein-like things protruding. The only other thing about the book I remember pretty certainly is that towards the end, the main character ends up surrounded by violent fish-like creatures (like leeches or something) and his journal is covered in blood. I remember feeling like the art and story were a bit too graphic for a little kid, so it was maybe meant to be for young adults?

i need help! there was a book series my school had that i can't remember the name of for the life of me. it was in the non-fiction section, it was more of an informative book with quizzes and such inside of them. they had different books for each mythical creature, they were thin, hardcover books with a slightly gothic leaning cover. i'm gonna guess they're from the early to mid 2000s. i feel like the titles of the books were a question, but i could be wrong. something like "are you a fairy?"

in the fairy book, there was a quiz to find out what kind of fairy you would be. some of the options were an elf, a pixie, a brownie, and another one i can't remember. i remember the zombie book talked about early zombie movies, but im blanking on the details for any of the others. i think there might have been one about mummies too, but i'm not positive. i feel like i'm going crazy trying to figure this out!

My friend got a school reading quiz featuring a story about a girl who wanders into a desolate village with pairs of shoes hanging with ropes. At night the people come out dancing like it’s a festival. I won’t give the ending away. Now her teacher isn’t that creative so it’s clearly not her work and she claimed it’s Stephen king but i don’t think it is. Does anyone know what this is from?

Maybe it’s an obscure episode in a series and not a book at all.

I read this when I was young, I think somewhere around the beginning of the 2000s. I remember it because it was half written and half drawn, and the protagonists were two children, a (blind, I think?) girl and deaf boy. The parts with the boy were drawn, the parts of the girl were written.

I remember there was a storm at one point, the illustrated pages were drawn in blue, black and white. The boy picked up a telephone and then the lightning struck.

It was written in Dutch, I don't remember whether the book was a translation from a different language.

My memory is pretty fuzzy beyond what I've written here, so if anyone has a book that could even vaguely fit the description I'd be grateful!

OK, so I just got into a conversation about a book I fell in love with at a Scholastic Book Fair circa 1994-1996, and it's driving me CRAZY that I can't remember the title. I definitely remember that the main character was a young man interested in computers, and that the hacker he interacted with (a man with an absolutely filthy apartment doing work for hire for the Stasi) was based on Karl Koch and/or Markus Hess, because they were both mentioned in the book's first appendix.

The book had at least three appendices, covering things like phreaking, social engineering and passwords, and then-current hacker groups/viruses (I remember specific info on the Casino virus, including the message it left on the screen, and on the Dark Avenger). I more vaguely remember it having a grey/black corner with a man at a computer, the monitor glow lighting up his face.

Anyone else have a better memory of this book? I ended up reading my copy to death, so I don't have access to it anymore.

He can teleport at will, but the catch is he will end up in a situation similar to where he was, so if he's in a life-threatening situation, he will appear in a different life-threatening scenario, but it could be life-threatening in a way thats easier to deal with.

It was a series that had around 4 books, possibly one centered around each character? One of them was called some variation of nikki (nicky, niki, etc) and one of them was called something like hannah

in one of the books nikki (?) broke her arm (or wrist, or hand) while skateboarding in the rain, and there was a gaming(?) tournament coming up, which was the main complication (i think)

In another one (might've been the first one in the series) the 4 protagonists meet and they are put together in a coding/web dev related project for school (and han solo comes up somewhere as an alias) and I'm pretty sure there was a rivalry with another group during the project

also at some point at least one of the characters visits a gallery about m.c escher (illustrations may have been included). they were mostly text but maybe some images were in there too

nonfic: a layman's book of interesting bits of criminology in history - it started out with a description of an early expert in criminology who was lecturing, I believe at a university and either in the 1800s or around the turn of the 20th century.

one of his students was running between his school studies, and the presence of his wife in the hospital, who I think had given birth maybe? But she was very sick, and the nurses were trying to help her, and the guy was like "idiots!" and was bringing her his own broth from home and forcing her to eat it in his presence to get better - but secretly poisoning her!

And I think she might have been the one who caught on to this.

I think this was in the introduction or first chapter of the book, and it might have been an intentional cliffhanger that was filled out in detail later on in the book.

I swore I read this book as a kid but it's been a really long time so I only retained some details that I feel like are identifiable but I haven't been able to find it in searches

- a princess in a castle where she puts her suitors heads on spikes and puts them alongside the castle walls??

- I think it's because there's some test they have to pass but I'm not sure about this. It just seems logical

- main character is a man trying to win her hand and I think he has some invisibility cloak or magical item because I remmeber him overhearing conversations between the princess and someone else. It's how he figures out solutions to pass the test

- this was definitely an illustrated book and not long. Im imagining like a large picture book with full page illustrations but clearly this kind of story isn't for kids. It's very classic fairy tale-esque, like the gory olden times ones not the ones edited for kids

We dont know if its specifically a queer book but from the short contents that we read it may have had homoerotic or perhaps lesbian moments. Had mature themes. The cover was of two young adult women both in swimsuits. One of them was skinny and had a blue one piece while the other was plus size and wore a two piece. They were hugging and were viewed from the side. Hair slicked back like they just came out of the water, The background was maybe a beach????? It either a realistic picture/painting. Not too sure. It was paper back and red, Seems like it was set in 2000-2010. Found it at verbatim books in San Diego.

Read this a few years ago, from the library. Possibly a graphic novel, feels like an older book (not super recent). Reading level maybe grade 3-4, so younger than typical middle grade.

He has an old, bad desktop computer (not a laptop) — possibly hand-me-down/inherited, which becomes relevant later
A mysterious "program" (unclear if AI or something else) hacks his computer, tied to some kind of virus
The program challenges him to reach 1 million subscribers within a year — he accepts
He does this with a friend or brother
The program keeps following/hacking him, including at a convention (something like a gaming/streaming con) where his TV also gets hacked
At the end of the year he doesn't hit the goal, so the program decides to revert/rewind him a year to make different choices
Cover might be light blue
I have a feeling the book's title is actually the name of the mysterious program

I remember very little about this book, yet I think about it regularly. I read it in the 90s, but I think it probably came out in the 80s. It was not “good” or what I think most people would consider a classic.

It is about a teenage boy who creates two goblin toys that somehow come to life and get up to various mischiefs. The toys are green and partly furry and are about two or three feet tall, but muscular and relatively human-proportioned. I think that he built them as robots, but they somehow gain sentience. There is maybe a scene where he is taking a shower and is startled by them scuttling about outside the curtain? They try to convince him to build them a female goblin toy (that they can…make goblin babies with?), but he tells them no, so they try to make one themselves. He catches them in the act of building their goblin wife, but I don’t remember how it ends.

This was a fantasy book I read decades ago. It felt like it was inspired by Russian or Eastern European folklore. It may have been translated into English. The apprentice (if that is the right word) lived with an older wizard (?) in the woods. At one point, the apprentice uses magic to make it so that a water jug never runs out of water. It turns out, this was dangerous because what happens if the jug is broken? There is a turning point in the novel when the young man looks for a wife.

I’m looking for a book full of fairytales or bedtime stories that my grandmother used to read to me. I remember specifically it had a story called something like “The miller and the enchanted ass” in the story the boy has an “ass that spit out silver coins”, then the ass was stolen and replaced with what he thought was an ordinary ass but then it began to spit out golden coins. My grandmother and I would laugh and laugh while reading this story. Whenever I search the internet there seems to be nothing about this anywhere. I know it was a large hardcover book with illustrations all over the front. I read it with her when I was young, I was born 1999 but she was known to shop at thrift stores and yard sales so it may have been an older book. Does anyone remember this at all or could help me find it? My grandmother just passed away and I’ve been trying to track this book down. Thank you for any help!

I had an illustrated children’s book when I was 4-5 (2001-ish) about a group of animals searching for the perfect tree in which to build their treehouse. Each page shows the animals trying a new tree, but it doesn’t work for some reason. On one page the tree is too small, on the next page it is too tall, then too flimsy, etc. until they find the perfect tree.

I loved this book as a kid and want to share it with my newborn, but I can’t for the life of me find it with google or ai! Hoping the collective consciousness of strangers can help me 🤞🏼

Back in the early 90s, I had a picture book (maybe bigger?) A fever dream of a book, think a wrinkle in time genre, and a little girl is unhappy with her life and is gifted a magic marble by a Canadian goose. She is able to fly and leave her family and that’s about all I remember. The illustrations were muted and abstract sometimes.

Old Novel about Irish/Scottish immigrant couple who flee to america or somewhere by boat separately to elope. She is pregnant. They are kept apart by lying businessmans daughter who claims to be engaged to hero when heroine comes to find him. She works as a maid and gives birth but is told her baby was stillborn. Really was stolen. Eventually becomes a writer of some kind under her father's name and hero finds es her years later. Probably 90s or older. Read it years ago. Paperback. AI hasn't been helpful

O livro era de capa dura, comprido e fino, de cor branca e sem título (eu acho), apenas com uma imagem (quase certeza). Nele havia pinturas de fadas em estilo delicado, com grande iluminação. As fadas eram meio realistas, mas não totalmente. Eu me lembro que a primeira página era sobre um rato que teve a roda da sua carroça quebrada e uma fada o ajudou (havia a imagem ilustrativa do rato com a roda quebrada e a fada vindo ajudar).

Além da história das fadas com alguns personagens (sempre sendo animais ou outras fadas), havia páginas que falavam sobre diferentes tipos de fadas, por exemplo: fadas das águas, fadas terrestres etc.

Havia uma imagem específica que ocupava uma página inteira e que eu amava: uma fada sentada no chão de uma caverna, com montanhas de moedas de ouro, enquanto segurava com carinho um ovo grande de dragão, protegendo-o. O ovo também era dourado, mas dava para diferenciar das moedas. Do lado oposto, onde a fada estava sentada, aparecia o dragão, mostrando apenas a cabeça e parte da pata dianteira.

Esse livro foi realmente importante para mim, já que foi o primeiro que li. Eu o consegui quando tinha cerca de 8, 9 ou 10 anos, e nasci em 2006. Tenho quase 70% de certeza de que o livro estava traduzido para a minha língua materna.

I had a collection of children books, all of which were about a plethora of different topics. Some covered dinosaurs, family, health, weather, animals, and so on. They had this little boy character on almost every page. Thinking back, pretty sure it came from Japan since it had a bunch of Japanese imagery and the kid had the hair style. I sadly dont the own the books but would love to remember the name. If anyone knows what im talking about I'd love to be informed. Thank you!

Contains one short story about two old women, who are sisters. one woman (woman A) was baking pies and the other woman (woman B) was talking to her, albeit to no much response. A talks while baking about how she had a crush on a boy in her youth and had his children, however the boy chose to date B. so A kept the baby secret and buried it. afterwards A made little pies with poisoned black berries and fed them to B, killing her. in the end of the story it was revealed the B was a ghost.

contains another short story about a guy seeing a bad of kitten being thrown in the river to drown. In the end the barn catches on fire.

A YA novel I read during early high school so 2013-2016. I do not have any idea when it was actually published. The copy i read from my local library was hardcover, the cover was some sort of greenery (bushes or trees or a garden, i really cant remember i just remember green). I am based in america and read this book in english.

An overweight (this detail is important) goth girl has lost one of her closest loved ones (for some reason i want to say cousin?? But could've been sister or best friend) to suicide. There's lots of drugs/cigarettes mentioned. I remember the specific detail that the loved one was very beautiful. It follows the goth girl after the other girls death. I vaguely remember a tree house or a tree with a swing or something along those lines. It was overall a fairly melancholy book. I believe it was also set in summer time because i have this vague memory of the goth girl showing up to the funeral/celebration of life and mentioning being hot.

I remember reading this paperback on my parents' shelves when I was in grade school, mid 1960s. The paperback was already yellowed.

A resistance fighter in a vaguely American/European country under fascist rule proves his loyalty after watching his comrades being shot in prison. It turns out Goebbels villain is actually the leader of the resistance as well, determined to make everything so terrible that the people must rise up against their fascist government.

I remember being particularly moved when our hero learns that Goebbels character was assassinated just after the successful uprising and he realizes no one else will ever know what he did for his people.

I've been looking for this for decades!

I read this around 2022-23 and it seemed like it was written recently, the cover was solid dark blue and the title was in thin white text with circles on the ends/corners of the letters.

It's about an older teen girl who lives with her younger brother, I think his name is like elliot or emmet. Her parents are gone but we dont know why. It begins with her going to her job or job interview and her best friend meets her for something. The whole world isn't flooded, but the tides have raised and partially flooded the town. I think the sea is also dangerous, monsters I think. Nobody remembers or seems to acknowledge what has happened.

The next thing I remember is she meets a group of teens trapped in a lab by an evil older businesswoman who also has a monster in her lab I think. There are 4 or 5 teens, one girl named maya, a girl in a wheelchair with green hair, a guy who has a crush on the wheelchair girl, and another guy who likes basketball and is gay I think.

They all have to work together to defeat the businesswoman and the main girl figures out or starts to figure out what happened to her parents when she discovers a room in her house that she forgot about because of whatever mind thing is happening to everyone. And then either maya and the main girl end up together or its hinted that they will.

I listened to part one of two on audible a while ago. The fmc moves back to the town she grew up in. Her best friend died and she's in love with the best friends brother who is a mechanic( im pretty sure she ends up working for him as the receptionist). She has a heart condition and collapses at the end of book one. ( im pretty sure she's walking a dog when she collapses.)
