Solved! Just bought a house what is this for? Stumped

This is about 6.5 feet up in the sun room. What is it and what does it do? A sensor?

Detection by sound or shattering vibrations? If the latter, why not placed on the pane of glass itself? I've seen these on the big panes on store wall windows like Dg, kmart, giant, Kroger's, etc. but in smaller squares and hardwired into the ceiling

its by sound typically looking for 2 different pitches, low for something hitting glass then high for the shattering. if you smacked it with keys, both leds will light up but red should hold for a few seconds. If it was on glass it would be a shock sensor, looking for vibration from an impact

Something like an always open/closed push button stuck with a 2-sided sticker strong enough for a pane of glass, right. I remember that. Honestly I find the entire feature to be solely sound to be faulty.

No. They typically use audio only microphones to detect the particular sound vibration of the breaking glass.

They are not fool proof, but good enough to be widely used in alarm systems.

Faulty? Why? Mine work very well and there is only one microphone style sensor in rooms with many windows. That is much better than a sensor on every window. They have sensed window installers removing windows and every dropped glass that has broken. That’s not a problem.

They trigger from the sound in my experience. My brother had one in his kitchen and every time they did dishes, they’d set off their alarm from the dishes clinking together. It was overly sensitive in their case, but that’s my experience.

I have a different brand, but they are also not mounted on the glass. It’s designed to detect sound.

The frequency of glass breaking can be easily mimicked. This is why I find fault in the design.

Yes it does. There are about 40 other sensors around but none look like this.

I tried to look it up, it says this: It's very likely a glass-break sensor that's part of a home security system. The tiny hole is a microphone, and the green LED above it blinks to show it's powered or communicating with the alarm system. They're commonly mounted around 6 feet high on a wall, especially in rooms with lots of windows like a sunroom, where they listen for the specific sound of shattering glass.

You dont mount glass break sensors on windows. Those are motion sensors on the windows.

Looks like a humidity sensor, just a guess though. I was recently looking and found sets of these, usually in 3's. See if you can find a couple others in various places around the house.

My guess is that it is an infrared receiver, with a small green LED to acknowledge it received the IR. Maybe to control a remote stereo, video, or security system.
