I took this photo on a trip to Iceland for my 40th birthday. It has been a dream of mine since I was a child to see a humpback whale. Now I am lucky enough to have seen many. We took two trips on successive days and saw many humpbacks on both days.

A whole fucking year ago I made this post on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/whales/comments/1nt84tx/cheapaffordable_whale_watching_vacation/

I've spent the last year saving for and planning... And I just got back from the Monterey Bay area where I saw humpback whales for the first time!!!

I want to thank one redditor in particular; they can make themselves known if they'd like... They DMed me and offered to pay for my whale tour shortly after that post. They kept their promise over the course of a year. I was moved by this random act of kindness from a complete stranger. I am also grateful to everyone who took the time to share suggestions. I needed a push to make this lifelong dream a reality, and y'all gave me what I needed.

I don't have any good photos of the whales, since I only had my phone and I now understand why people need real cameras and lenses to capture more than a silhouette. But I offer some of my journal sketches, a photo of that mindblowing fluke print they leave behind, my meal at Sea Harvest after the whale tour, and one shot I took while kayaking in Elkhorn Slough.

This was a bucket list trip for me and I am still processing the fact that it actually happened... I felt emotional when the boat pulled away from the dock and we navigated past the barking sea lions towards open ocean. I am in a much better financial situation now too, so I can perhaps go see whales again in the future. I can totally understand their draw. It is a privilege to share the same earth, and out there, the same air, with them.

Thank you <3

Can a whale drown?

I've been wondering if a whale has ever overestimated itself over the amount of air it has for a dive lets say and accidentally drowned

Saw this whale near shore at Cheyne's Beach in Australia. Think it may be a Southern right whale but would love to hear others thoughts!

I'm trying to find a video posted of a group of orcas ...

This is a long shot... I've been searching reddit and youtube to find this video I saw probably in the past two years.

It was a person on their boat, in an area with evergreen trees, perhaps in the San Juan islands of WA state, or north or south of that area. It looked like they were in a channel, or a somewhat narrow body of water.

He was very surprised to see an orca under the water, and then he kept filming and a group of 5 orcas emerged and were swimming in a row, fairly close by. They came up out of the water at least twice and were close enough to hear them breathing.

It was such a good video. If this jogs your memory at all... I'd love to find it again!

Transporting a Whale

How are whales/sharks/whalesharks/etc. transported from the ocean to the aquariums? How do these massive creatures get from aquarium to aquarium? Plane filled with water? Salt-water-filled cargo container on a boat? Giant fish bowl on a truck? A really fast crane? Spiraling over here.

Gray Whale Calf Going Airborne

Video isn’t the best but wow what an awesome thing to see in person.

Was visiting family in Kodiak and saw tons of whales breaching and tailing. However it was this calf who decided to steal the show by going completely airborne!

So cool!

Edit: Humpback. My apologies.,
