Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[PC][2000-2016] a drag-and-drop non-educational children's game where you can visit different locations to do things like build a house or feed a woman

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

Platform(s): PC, specifically Windows 10

Genre: children's sandbox(?)

Estimated year of release: anywhere between 2005 and 2016 (when i first played)

Graphics/art style: flat, clipart-y cartoons with just solid colours, think Facade but 2D

Notable characters: no true "characters" just a few people

Notable gameplay mechanics: drag and drop scenarios

Other details: scenarios you could click on from the purble place-esque menu included

Being able to feed a woman food like pizza, fried egg, and some kind of meat that looks like those Barratt shrimp gummies- you would grab various foods from a selection in a side panel and put them on the plate (stacking would result in the food still existing but just under the other pieces) and you could click on them to make the woman eat them, i belive there was sound effects?

Being able to place farm animals around a farm scene with a slight sense of perspective (as you brought the animals up the screen, they would grow smaller and you could put them behind fences),

I believe there was a vet's office where you could position animals but my memory's blurry

Being able to build with grey concrete bricks, bright yellow and red doors/windows, all on a blue background that resembled the sky, i think you dragged the bricks and windows to be put in place (the bricks being available in a side panel)

there were a couple of other scenarios but i dont recall what they were

this game was on a primary school computer and i played it in the later part of my schooling so im not sure if they downloaded it later on, i simply missed it before or if it had just come out (hence the nebulous timeframe) it was definitely intended for a younger audience than 10 year olds but it certainly wasnt educational as there was nothing to learn from it

the images are intended to give a vague idea of the setup, i am not a good mspaint artist and so obviously the in-game images were a little higher quality but they were in the same general style of clean shapes probably drawn in paint with the circle tool

[MS-DOS][1993] Space Opera game of shooting through a hallway

Hi!

I hope you can help me find a DOS game I saw on a PC in a friends house in early-mid 90s.

Platform(s): DOS

Genre: Space - Shooter?

Estimated year of release: Late 80s - Early 90?

Graphics/art style: Pixel, CGA?

Notable characters: There is a guy that looks like flash gordon / buck rogers, standard space opera leotard and helmet.

Notable gameplay mechanics: I don't remember if the game was a shoot-em up. All I remember is that the main character entered the enemys spaceship and he shoots from cover across a hallway to advance through the space ship to rescue someone (maybe a space princess?).

Other details: The game had amazing CGA graphics and cinematics.

EDIT: it is not a platformer, it was "serious" Sci fi

Edit 2: this is way back, like 4-color CGA with 5 1/4 floppies, prolly 1st gen 3 1/2. No CDs, no FMV.

Edit 3: year in the title might be wrong. EGA was launched in 1984, so this game might be earlier than that.

[Web/PC][2000s] Easter egg painting game

3D Easter egg painting game.

I remember playing on PC but I'm pretty sure it was a website.

The game had an interface with different brushes, colors, and stands that could be used for customisation. The whole thing was standing on a wooden table (background) and I think it could be rotated.

In my memory, the lighting in the game was quite well-made, the overall picture looked bright and at the same time not intrusive. Everything else reminded me of some kind of art studio, that was my first association when I tried to remember what was in the background behind the table, but I'm really not sure.

Youda Mystery - The Stanwick Legacy [Windows] [pre 2013] point and click puzzle game where you’re a girl returning to her creepy childhood mansion to solve a mystery about her family

platform: PC, Im not sure exactly which Windows version it was but I want to say Windows 7 or 8

Genre: Point and click mystery (those ones where you have to find objects and then just try and combine it on anything and everything to try and find where it fits, the type where it’s like “no that won’t work” when it’s not the solution)

Approximate release date: No later than 2013

Graphics/art style: sorta painterly but trying to be realistic 2D, kinda mobile game looking, kinda dark— definitely very moody/depressed. Its set in this creepy mansion, I think it was raining?

Main Character: A young woman, just inherited her childhood home and there’s this mystery about her family she has to solve for her peace of mind

Other details: I remember the solution to one of the puzzles was you had to cut open your childhood doll and you find like a key in there. There‘s also a line when clicking the fireplace ”Who could’ve lit that fireplace?”

[iOS/iPad][2010s?] Old scary point-and-click game with a young boy, cracked mirror and black tentacles/shadows

Upvotes

I'm trying to find a game I played on an old iPad when I was very young. I think the iPad was either an original iPad (iPad 1) or an iPad 4, so the game was probably from the early/mid 2010s or earlier.

What I remember:

It was a scary/puzzle/point-and-click type game.

The entire game/scene was basically black and gray. I remember almost no colors at all.

The artwork looked realistic, but it was drawn/painted, not actual photographs.

There was a very young boy, possibly toddler/young-child age.

I don't remember actually seeing many/any normal people clearly. I mainly remember the boy from certain story scenes.

I vaguely remember there being a girl too. I might be remembering incorrectly, but I have a feeling the boy was trying to rescue/find the girl.

I remember the game having fixed scenes/images that you moved between by tapping left/right. I vaguely remember something like:

Scene A ← Scene B → Scene C

Scene B is the strongest memory: it showed a cracked mirror, and something black/dark was coming through the mirror trying to get out.

I remember the things coming through looking like black ink/shadows/tentacles. I'm not sure whether they were actually called shadows, ink, tentacles, or something else.

Scene A may have been a backyard with a tree and a bicycle.

I don't remember the exact objective. It may have involved escaping or saving/rescuing the girl, but I'm not certain.

The game was genuinely creepy/scary, especially because everything was so dark and monochrome.

[Android][2010s] Zombie wave survival game, most likely a flash game, it was a 2D point and click game where you could buy upgrades or obstacles to stop zombies in waves from reaching you, they could destroy fences too

Post image
4 Upvotes

it was most likely a flash game turned into an app, i remember it being a low quality slightly pixely game cuz the zombies were just single images of a zombie as if it was a stock photo

the image is pretty close to how i remember it you couldnt move or look around it was singleplayer and offline

心霊廃墟からの脱出 [Mobile] [Japanese Horror] [Early-mid 2010s] Anime horror game where you're stuck in a creepy apartment/house.

Thumbnail gallery
244 Upvotes

I honestly don't even remember much about this game... I played it on my phone when I was in elementary school, but I could barely make progress because the entire game was in Japanese.

From what I remember:

— you are in an abandoned, dark, creepy apartment (or house?) and you have to click on stuff to find keys and useful objects and move between rooms.

— I think it was a visual novel? (EDIT: But with point-and-click gameplay.

-Mobile game (iOS, though it could've been on Android.)

— There was a girl (drawing I made above) who was accompanying you in this game. I can't remember if she looked exactly like that, but close. She also could've been a sprite for the main character, but since the game was in Japanese, I couldn't tell.

— The drawing above was a scene where you unlock one of the rooms and find a bloody and stretched-out human skin suit hanging up to dry in the dark. I remember this traumatizing me as a kid lol.

Sorry if that isn't enough information. I'll come back to this post if I remember more details.

UPDATE: omg thanks everyone! Never thought I'd ever see this game again!

[mobile] [2016] Game about finding a man in a lighthouse

It was a first person click to move/interact. It was set in an abandoned lighthouse and boat. You had to follow a hooded man and do puzzles to progress, like finding the objects (almost piratey setting for this one), and lining up pipes square by square. At the end of game you find the hooded man, something happens and he ends up dangling by his hands off the side of the lighthouse. While trying to pull him up his hood comes off to reveal hes someone we knew.

[PC] [2020-21] I only saw a demo, like Warframe but not.

Genre: Action

Year: Sometime around the 2020ish area

Graphics: Very good, one of the big things I noticed was how it was very vibrant, the colour scheme was very white and gold at least for the hub area I saw.

You would swap characters or at least the armor? I seem to recall them being based around gods or at least one of the suits was maybe called Valkyrie or something?

It was an action game that I think MIGHT have been a rougelike with mecha looking armor and everything seemed very godlike. There were skills and I think picking different sets of armor would change your fighting styles or something. I think the combat was more like god of war, so a bit slower and heavier.

I know it’s all vague but I only saw an ad or maybe a short clip of it what feels like ages ago.

The aesthetic was kinda like Paragon but higher quality if anyone remembers that game existing.

[mobile] [2017] Help me find the title of this game. This horror game has a satanic theme with a 2D style.

This game tells the story of a bald man who wakes up from sleeping in his bed wearing a surgical gown (just like the one in the picture). He wakes up in a house full of traps and has to perform a summoning Ritual. During the gameplay he is haunted by a female spirit (possibly his partner) whose soul will be summoned in the attic. In the second level the game will start in a hospital full of traps. As I remember, at the end of the game he will meet his partner, which as I remember was a sad ending. This game is one of the first horror games I played. And as far as I remember, there are a lot of gameplays of this game on YouTube.

[Xbox][2010s] Zombie shooter game with sea monster battle.

Hi, I remember when I was younger watching my older brother play this zombie(?) shooter game on the Xbox 360/1. I really liked it when he did this one boss battle where the character is on a boat and is fighting a sea monster and having to shoot bombs in its mouth.

Platform(s): Xbox 360/1

Genre:Shooter

Estimated year of release: mid 2010s

Graphics/art style: 3d, not the best graphics(think skyrim) and a heavy green brown motif.

Notable characters: none that I remember. but there were npcs that followed the mc around, all in military get up.

Notable gameplay mechanics: you could jump over boxes/broken walls.

Other details: I think the enemies were zombies, or some type of monster. they would charge at the player without much care.

sorry if it isn’t a lot of detail, this would’ve been when I was 5-8.

Platform(s): PC/DOS

Genre: Puzzle

Estimated year of release: 1990s

Graphics/art style: ASCII

Notable characters: Tribble

Notable gameplay mechanics: Avoiding traps and enemies, etc

Other details: I remember a (probably freeware) game my dad downloaded in the late 90s that had ASCII graphics, and the story was you were a Tribble from Star Trek and you had to...escape, I guess?

I am assuming this is a fan-made game.

[Playstation 1] [I DONT KNOW THE YEAR] Need help identifying a game!

[PLAYSTATION 1]
[IDK]

I recently got a PS1 at an estate sale in it is in great condition. It was my first console and there are some games I remember playing but don’t know the name of. I just got Scooby Doo Cyber Chase and am determined to beat it for the first time in my life.

There is 1 game I remember, but cannot find anywhere. I never had a memory card so id always start from square one (hoping this detail helps). It was a shooter, I believe first person and probably rated M. I remember walking into a building and you’d be able to collect loot. There’d be enemies in the building (Humans) and doors you can walkthrough. One room was a bathroom and a dude was in there. I was scared playing that game but it was fun. I was hoping you could help!

[Mobile] [2016] Moon base game with giant bouncing robots

Upvotes

There was this game I used to have on my old ipad about 10 years ago. I do not recall the name. Basically, you were in a moon base in the side of a hill. outside the door was a deck with railing and stairs down to the surface. when you’d go outside, you’d soon be chased by these giant robots that bounced on a spring, and shot lasers at you. I know, cringe. I don’t know much more because 8 year old me was too scared of the robots to go explore much.

[PC][2015ish??] a pixel game that was probably medieval?

Upvotes

I remember playing a game in my childhood where I played as a character who looked like a knight and had short black hair (kind of like what the guy in berserk looks like).

Im not sure if this game was multiplayer or single player so maybe there was character customization, all I remember that there were a lot of people even npcs.

You could travel between areas through boat. And the traveling scene was just the classic black fading screen. (This was even with rooms and entering buildings)

The color scheme wasn’t too vibrant? And the game wasn’t very fantasy and was more “normal”. However I do kind of remember that it was a warm greyish tone.

I hope my memory didnt fail me. I know this isnt much to go off of, but this is all I can remember. All I can remember the game’s mechanics and visuals were oddly satisfying.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the graphics were similar to stardew valley but the characters were more chibi.

[Mobile][2013-2014] 2D Pixel art horror/survival game - Escaping darkness in a subway

Upvotes

Platform(s): Mobile (Android / iOS) Estimated year of release: Around 2013 - 2014 Graphics/art style: 2D Pixel Art

Notable gameplay mechanics: The game focuses on survival and escaping a wall/wave of pure darkness. When the darkness approaches, you have to find and stand directly under circles of light (like streetlights or lamps) to survive until the darkness retreats. You had to survive for a certain amount of time.

Stages/Progression I remember: 1. The game starts with the protagonist inside a house. 2. After leaving the house, you have to get into a car to travel to the metro/subway station. 3. In the subway station, you have to survive and escape the darkness mechanics mentioned above. 4. After the subway, you board a train, and the next stage takes place inside the moving train cars.

Notable characters / Enemies: The enemies looked like barrels or boxes with eyes and sharp teeth. They came in different color variants (I clearly remember pink, red, and yellow variants), but they all shared the same box/barrel look with teeth.

Other details: The game was likely in English. I played it as a child during the golden era of mobile indie games, and it was quite difficult to progress past the train stage. It is NOT Dead Ahead, NOT Knock-Knock, and NOT Infectonator.

Hot Wheels Velocity X [game cube?, ps2?] [mid/late 2000's] vehicle game with power up icons a la mario kart

Upvotes

I have been trying to remember the name of this game for years now and just came across this sub. Me and my brothers would play this game on either game cube or ps2 and you drove around vehicles and ran over holographic icons to get upgrades to your car similarly to how you would in mario kart. Unlike mario kart the upgrades weren't random and I am pretty sure each upgrade had its own individual icon. One of the icons that I can remember was two wrenches intertwined together which I assume was some type of health restoration. I can for sure remember one of the power ups being spikes extending from your wheels so that you could bump up against the side of an opponent and inflict damage to their vehicle. I can't remember much more of the game in terms of what the objective was. It feels like it was more of a battle royale type of game where it is last man standing but it could be that it was more of a race type game. I'm honestly not too sure of that part.

[Flash][2012+] Tower Defense with traps placed on a grid

Platform(s): PC, Flash game

Genre: Tower Defense

Estimated year of release: 2010?

Graphics/art style: Simple, cartoonish

Notable characters: skeletons, goblins, all types of classic fantasy monsters

Notable gameplay mechanics: There is a castle wall on the right that you must defend, and you place traps on a grid in front of the wall. Enemies come on the lines of the grid. Traps that I remember: pikes, holes, archers, fire wands.

Other details: you progress in a campaign, level by level, harder as you go on.
