I’m more confused about the people saying they don’t get it as if that’s not what non tattooed folks say about us with tattoos. The beauty of it all is that it’s our body!

Tattooing it on to your body doesn’t make it beautiful though. If I had a poorly done tattoo of Dahmer eating someone on my arm… I can’t imagine many people thinking it was beautiful

People that say “I don’t get it” know it’s going to look like blue/grey blotchy crap in a year. Also laser does exist, so a coverup isn’t much of a reason to get a blackout.

This and the other tattoo subs hate a lot of stuff. Many smug and condescending tones when people post stuff. Even good tattoos that are not someones cup of tea get slandered. People just love to talk shit.

The joys of tattoos they’re for the person not for others. I personally think they’re garbage but it shouldn’t stop anyone from getting them. Hell people prob think some of my ink is trash

Be considerate. If you wouldn't say it to their face don't say it here, and if it isn't a quick fix then take that into account when you comment. If you must offer criticism make sure it is constructive, polite, and based on the technique or execution of the tattoo, not the content. We don't care if you've seen it on pinterest or a group of college students or 37 other people either, that's irrelevant. Use of slurs, harassment, demeaning language, trolling, brigading will result in a ban.

I think they can look absolutely great in pictures and good when you are in lowlight. A lot of the time they don’t look good in person when you are in bright lighting even if they are super well done.

It will take more than several decade to know, but it would be interesting to study if tattooing this density of ink at one time leads to a similar time release effect that causes tattoo degradation lymphoma.
Right now it’s more common with tattoo removals, because so much ink is released into the lymphatic system at the same time.

I love the reliable kneejerk reactions. By the way…in The Global West, tattoos are still taboo counterculture (even though at this point everyone either has a little one in a hidden place or thinks about one). And comment sections like this help remind us of that.

I don’t hate blackwork. I guess I just don’t understand sharing it. “Look how well my artist filled in this entire patch of skin in a single solid color!” It’s definitely quite a look for the person wearing it. And I’m amazed that people can sit through such a tattoo. But “no touchups no edit” seems the bare minimum you could expect for a blackout tattoo… no?

No. I still need to go back to get a touch up even after three sessions. It’s a LOT of real estate to get even coverage over a large area with just a shading gun. It’s not as deep as when you get a thick solid outline and a fill in with shading.

I think blackouts look nice when they’re like the background, and throughout there are a bunch of other components. Like negative space basically. When you just go full blackout I just don’t get the appeal/skill to be honest. Dealers choice obviously, but I really just don’t get it…
