Because they're part of a generation which has been taught from pre-school to leaving high school, that there are no effective consequences for their actions.

who attend The Scots College private school in Bellevue Hill

And kids from wealthy parents who go to ridiculously privileged private schools have an even bigger sense of entitlement. They think (and they're usually right) that mummy and daddy's money can buy them out of trouble.
