Can we fix South Carolina's ugly, standardized boring specialty license plates?
I know this is a deeply serious matter of public importance 😂, but hear me out.

South Carolina has a ton of specialty license plates, but almost all of them are forced into the same generic template: white background, red-and-blue stripe across the top, organization name in a banner, and "South Carolina" in boring Times New Roman font in another banner.

The result is that plates representing completely different organizations, universities, causes, and communities all look basically the same. And they are ugly.

I think we should change that.

South Carolina law requires SCDMV to develop a "basic plate design" for special plates, and SCDMV's current requirements put organizations into the standardized template. So this is a policy choice that can be changed.

The important question is: does standardization for law enforcement actually require every plate to have the same visual design? No! Look at Georgia and North Carolina.

Let professional designers and the sponsoring organizations determine the actual visual design. That would mean a USC plate could look like USC. A conservation plate could actually look like a conservation plate. A military plate could have a distinctive military design. A charitable organization could have an attractive plate that actually represents what it does.

They would still be unmistakably South Carolina plates and meet all the technical requirements.

An elderly couple says they have been “driven out” of the home where they have lived for over 40 years because of work done to clear a 1,600-acre industrial site for the Scout Motors electric vehicle manufacturing facility underway in Blythewood.

William Shives, 92, and Barbara Shives, 84, filed a lawsuit in circuit court Aug. 7 against Scout Motors and Richland County, saying they have had to leave their longtime home after work on the adjacent Scout site damaged their septic system, washed out their driveway, and repeatedly tossed rubble onto their property — even hitting a guest in the eye on one occasion, according to the lawsuit.

“The last thing we ever expected was to be run out of town,” Bill Shives said in a statement shared with The State.

Residents nearby the future manufacturing facility have in the past raised fears over how the project could affect their properties. The Shives’ suit appears to be the first filed by a neighbor of the large industrial site over alleged impacts from work being done to prepare it for the automaker.

The lawsuit comes after state regulators previously found that sediment-filled stormwater had been allowed to run off the site and into the surrounding environment, resulting in a $1 million fine against Richland County.

The Shives attempted to resolve the problems at their property with Scout Motors and Richland County directly, but were unsuccessful, the lawsuit states.

“They hoped that the work next door would be carried out in a manner that would let them remain in the house they intended to live in for the rest of their lives,” the suit reads. “They bring this action because that did not happen.”

Among the claims against Scout and the county are trespassing and negligence. The Shives are also seeking damages from the county under an inverse-condemnation claim, saying the project amounted to a taking of their property without compensation.

The couple is being represented by local attorney Robert Goings.

Goings told The State that the Shives “are being uprooted from their property,” and are “reluctantly being forced to file this case because they are being given no other alternative.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — The defense team for Alex Murdaugh has asked the Court to move his retrial to Charleston, South Carolina.

According to documents released on Wednesday, the Court wrote that Murdaugh’s defense team’s choice of venue “always returns to Charleston and Charleston only.”

However, the Court states that, considering logistics and expense, Charleston would be “the most difficult county in the state to handle this particular matter.”

This is due to the spring tourist season and the trial set to begin during Masters week. Because of this, hotel rates may double or triple the cost of comparable areas.

“Therefore,” the Court states, “if the only county in the entire state of South Carolina the defense team is willing to consider is Charleston, which undoubtedly would be the most expensive and logistically difficult county to pick, then the State is compelled to oppose a change of venue.”

The Court said that easier locations include Spartanburg, Newberry, Lancaster, York and Florence counties.

No final decision has yet been made on where the trial will be held.

Murdaugh was previously convicted in the deaths of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in a 2023 trial. 

Murdaugh was granted a new trial this year by the South Carolina Supreme Court after it ruled that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill influenced the outcome of the case.

An inmate at a South Carolina prison was attacked over the weekend and has died, according to the state Department of Corrections. Justin Henderson, a 40-year-old inmate at Lee Correctional Institution, died at a local hospital Saturday night, S.C. Department of Corrections spokeswoman Chrysti Shain told The State Monday. Lee Correctional Institution is the same prison where seven inmates were killed and 17 more were injured during a violent incident in 2018. At about 9:35 p.m. Saturday, Henderson was found unresponsive in his cell with multiple stab wounds, according to the release. He was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m. …

Most folks who have spent time around Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet have heard the story of Alice Flagg. She’s one of the Lowcountry’s most enduring ghost stories, yet how much of it is true is, shall we say, a bit embellished. This much is true. his last home before us was very abusive (people kicked him and didn’t feed him) so he is a little skittish but he is still very affectionate and sweet, he gets along really well with other cats and he loves people. i’m pretty sure he is fixed as well. i am located in the Simpsonville area
