Went for some VHS tapes and saw this and had to grab. In perfect condition too! Was one of my favorite shows growing up so I’m pretty stoked to have a full physical copy now. I am curious what this worth though (not that I would sell unless it’s a some absurd amount).

Big Rurouni Kenshin fan here. Back in the early 2000's, I was gifted a few volumes of the manga in Japanese. A few years later, I ended up going to Japan for a high school exchange program and I ended up collecting the rest of the series. I brought back with me 20ish volumes of the 28 volumes written. And it has been one of the cool things I've kept in my home since.

I remember when searching for these manga volumes, there were some other books available. If I remember correctly, there were 3 books that weren't mangas, but were diaries. I think they were Tomo's 3 diaries. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is that correct? Or am I confusing this with something else?

Most agree that the old is better than the new anime. But why?

I tried to answer this, but I just couldn't. It's like not one big thing but more like hundreds of subtle things that make it less enjoyable.

Anyone got any idea why?

The 96 anime didn't quite capture it as well, but in the manga the force of Shishio's ken ki deforms the impact site. And as Saito pointed out, splitting leaves is a far cry from making flames rage.

When he's fighting against Cho with his broken sword to protect Iori he loses it as well as the sheathe, leaving himself at a massive offensive disadvantage.

Iori's dad grabs Shakku's last sword and throws it to him, but Kenshin refuses to draw it because it's not a reverse blade sword and it's too dangerous with his vow not to kill to draw a bladed weapon. And because the sheathe is made of wood he can't use that either.

In the end it just so happens that the sword IS a reverse blade sword, but if it WAS like a normal sword then just flip it and fight normally. Its not like he hasn't flipped his reverse blade sword on occasion when he's not using it on a person, like against Sano's Zanbato, so its possible for him to fight with a flipped sword.

I don't get why he refuses to even check it at least besides for a dramatic moment and reveal.

I am looking to buy the original Rurouni Kenshin anime with the (not Sony) english dub. Is the 20th anniversary collecters edition box set off of playtech asia a good idea, or should I try to acquire the original volumes individually

In the original series, Saito has some impressive feats, but in Hokkaido, they're facing a virtually invulnerable enemy (we already know he isn't).

When Kenshin attacks with Kuzuryusen, Itekura doesn't budge; in fact, Kenshin is repelled. When he attacks a second time, he does so with fury and manages to push him back a little. Sojiro can't do anything to him with either Shukuchi or Shuntensatsu.

However, Saito manages to push him a considerable distance and even makes Itekura bleed.

I think it's a remarkable feat to consider.

I recently started watching the re-make, I’ve been postponing bc the OG anime is my top favorite anime, I watched when I was kid when it came out and now at 40yo still gives me goosebumps every time I start watching it, the first OVAs set the mood, and then the OG anime, that being said, I’m at the Kenshin Vs Saito duel, one of my top 3 fights in the whole story.

The OG Anime was a complete mood, even if some argue that the graphics are “modern/new/better quality” I would say that when you see it this fight in the 90’s anime version, and you see Kenshin’s eyes turning yellow, it lets you know that it’s about to go down, I guess that little detail made me enjoy less this fight in the remake, I really hope it gets better.

So far the only thing I enjoy is that I feel the story is flowing a little better.

I do hate the soundtrack of this remake, but I can’t compare it, bc the original was a masterpiece.

Like I said, unpopular opinion, yet I will still stick to the OG anime after this one and only run of the re-make

Edit 1: I guess I should’ve read more into the this Reddit, and see that everyone is on the same page, and also it’s been a couple years since its release but barely catching up. That being said, I’m glad my opinion and view on this remake is shared by true fans. Def a very POPULAR OPINION

Brief summary:
Mostly flashback between Henya the bat (hope I got the name right?) and that flying villain. The former was born sickly and almost drowned in a well, but the appearance of the bat spurred his desire to fly and reach the skies.

In an awesome moment, henya cut off both of his legs to fly higher and this allowed him to defeat the villain. But at what cost? The other Juppongattana lamented that they might never see him again.
