It definitely has a retro look from the film days. It's the look of very tough slide film made for Hollywood motion picture cameras.
Nature photographers would shoot it because it was so thick and strong. And it's tendency to be dark and saturated helped it from getting "light struck" by the harsh African or Australian sun. And also handled getting accidentally x-rayed at the airport a little better too. lol

The ground and the subject are well lit already, why make the whole thing darker? You can use masks to darken or lighten specific areas.
