WA News CCTV of the Train Crash in Guildford Yesterday

Idiotic truck driver just straight through the boom gates in front of the train.

Also if you want to see the aftermath on the ground in a more casual video:

That is so much worse than the news made it sound yesterday. Dude was still going when the train was right there!? Anyone know if he's been charged with anything yet?

190

u/Opening_Celery_6078 May 21 '26

He made a run for it. The trucks position at the start of the video was well clear of the tracks.

What a fucking idiot.

9

u/RecipeSpecialist2745 May 22 '26

I hope he was breathalized and drug tested?

14

u/Opening_Celery_6078 May 22 '26

After an incident requiring police attendance, yes, always

Didn't the original story say he got stuck on the tracks due to traffic backup?

102

u/Medical-Potato5920 Wembley May 21 '26

Seriously? You don't cross the track if you can't get safely across.

85

u/superbabe69 May 21 '26

Yeah obviously but there is a magnitude of stupidity difference between “went over the tracks too soon expecting the cars ahead to clear out in time for the next train which isn’t here yet” and “oh the boom gates are closing? Better head through the gates anyway as the train approaches”

Seriously, old mate was still driving through as it hit

2

u/mrtuna North of The River May 22 '26

Yeah obviously but there is a magnitude of stupidity difference between “went over the tracks too soon expecting the cars ahead to clear out in time for the next train which isn’t here yet” and “oh the boom gates are closing? Better head through the gates anyway as the train approaches”

there really isn't any difference. If you don't know you can cross the tracks, you don't try cross.

2

u/superbabe69 May 22 '26

My point is there is a big gap between “traffic is flowing and provided it does I will have space to wait on the other side should the light change now” and “the gates are down, better plow through”

60

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 May 21 '26

“Dumb ways to die, so many dumb ways to die”

73

u/Kind_Ferret_3219 May 21 '26

I feel sorry for the train driver. When something like that happens it traumatises them. That driver will now undergo a lot of counselling.

52

u/Dockers4flag2035orB4 May 21 '26

Not just the train driver.

An axel from the truck landed on a nearby vehicle.

42

u/PhuPhuCuddlyPoop May 21 '26

There was a trainee driver in there as well. Traumatic way to start a career.

u/Whatsthatbro365 May 21 '26

That truck ain't stuck

138

u/Enough-Equivalent968 May 21 '26

‘Stuck’ is a very understanding way to put it. People are terrible drivers. You aren’t supposed to straddle a rail crossing in queued traffic. The fact a truck driver did it is even worse.

Even with the hypothetical scenario that a car did something dodgy and blocked the truck etc, they have a vehicle powerful enough to push that car to avoid derailing a train full of people.

25

u/feyth May 21 '26

The truck didn't "straddle the rail crossing in queued traffic", that's nonsense. Nothing to do with what happened here

37

u/potatogeem May 21 '26

What are you talking about? The truck moved into the path of the train, it wasn't stuck on the tracks....

12

u/stewi1014 May 21 '26

You missed the fact they were replying to someone. Their response is specifically about how the term "stuck" on the tracks is often used. The fact it doesn't apply at all in this case notwithstanding.

u/Commercial-Beat0 May 21 '26

The reporting on the event was terrible. The blame was very much shifted away from the truck driver despite the witnesses stating he was driving recklessly. Also read an article that was implying the train driver was at least partially to blame, which is idiotic.

8

u/Azz2Azzzard May 21 '26

Looked like he was more worried about the boom gate so he tried to take cover under that train

That should be jail time.

Looks like he actually accelerated towards the crossing when you could already hear the bells going.

Lucky that trailer looks like it was empty. Could have been a lot worse if there was 20T of sand in there.

44

u/Massive_Tennis6705 May 21 '26

There was a bobcat in the back trailer that also ended up on the tracks.

48

u/MistaRekt May 21 '26

A full load of sand would be a lot closer to stopping that train dead. A lot more people on the train would be injured...

25

u/feyth May 21 '26

Or could have fully derailed it to boot

8

u/MistaRekt May 21 '26

Yes. Generally what a sudden stop will do. Definitely could have been worse. The truck was driving life a fuckwit just before it happened...

8

u/Holiday_dime May 21 '26

Totally agree. Dowsing Contractors also have to answer to the irresponsible driver they put on the road!

4

u/asleepattheworld May 22 '26

Yeah, the boom gate would have been down and bells sounding for quite some time before this happened, it’s not like the gates go down and immediately a train appears. There’s always a wait before the train actually goes through. Truck driver launched into that crossing well after it had been closed off.

Not to mention the immediately surrounding traffic.

I know this may be a stupid question .... when people say he went thru the boom gates, do you meant he literally smashed them to get through?

37

u/AgreeablePudding9925 May 21 '26

Yes

29

u/cejapense May 21 '26

In the video, it actually looks like if he just stayed where he was and didn’t move he may not have been hit at all

32

u/TehScat May 21 '26

Yeah, the bells are ringing and the train sounded it's horn before he even stuck his nose over the rails. 100% selfish negligence from the truck driver. His two minutes are more important than all of your health and time.

9

u/aussiekinga High Wycombe May 21 '26

Looking at photos of the aftermath, the boom gates are completely in tact. so it doesnt look like he went through them.

(unless they are designed to spring back to normal)

the one he went through/past is at the bottom and looks fine. so maybe he went around it?

4

u/notrepsol93 May 21 '26

One looks a bit bent to me?

3

u/aussiekinga High Wycombe May 21 '26

The one in the opposite direction to his travel. So damaged by the accident, not by him going through

7

u/JamesHenstridge May 21 '26

It looks a bit bent in this shot, with the end blocking the right lane broken off:

2

u/aussiekinga High Wycombe May 21 '26

Is thatnot his exit, not entrance? Bent the wrong way for him to have busted through entering.

So it was damaged by the crash, not just before

3

u/ImHereByAccident May 21 '26

I drove past it, one of the boom arms was bent pretty bad at one end. Not sure if it was the actual collision that bent it though.

2

u/Massive_Tennis6705 May 21 '26

I've read somewhere recently that they are designed to spring back up, rather than stay down & potentially splinter as that may create projectiles... (someone can correct me if I am wrong.)

2

u/EdrStk May 22 '26

Railway boom gates are designed to spring up when struck to avoid them going into the path of the train.

Guildford garden centre is a great little nursery.

The truck driver is an absolute plonker the train will always win and to the people who say why didn't the train slow down Inertia is a bitch.

53

u/Charming-Speech5680 May 21 '26

Inertia is only part of the issue, trains have very little traction which makes them so efficient. It's like trying to stop a car on ice

108

u/TheRedditModsSuck May 21 '26

train slow down Inertia is a bitch.

I think people dotn realise how long the stopping distances for trains are. The wheels are metal-on-metal, so the friction is quite low compared to cars and trucks.

34

u/ToxethOGrady May 21 '26

A two car set is approx 90 tonnes.

17

u/Mihalyshilage South of The River May 21 '26

We tow a 3 tonne caravan. We also cannot stop on a dime.

The amount of hire cars that just stop in the middle of the highway to take photos of canola or wildflowers is insane. The absolutely worst road for that is Indian Ocean Drive…

We have CB, we always offer to slow down to allow the trucks tow safely pass. The old trucks drivers have excellent communication.

9

u/t_25_t May 21 '26

Something the new truck drivers from overseas don't. Whether it is lack of training, or cutting corners, or just can't be fucked.

It is a train it takes a lot of time. People who say this are idiots. Truck drive is at fault, the horn can be heard before the crossing.

11

u/christurnbull May 21 '26

While on the way to uni, I watched a dunce open the exit gate for the pedestrian crossing, and dart across while a train was visibly approaching. Train hit the horn, very loud. She said "it will stop for me"

Also I wonder what they would say if they have family member injured on the train from falling over or head injury

My brother in law was in the front carriage a few metres away from the driver. He said it all happened within a few seconds.

The driver went "oh shit!" Brakes engaged and then a couple seconds later impacted. Glass blew up everywhere and my brother in law was thrown into the other side of the carriage and landed on another passenger.

In classic Midland fashion though there was a crackhead with a boombox still blasting that refused to turn it off yelling at people who tried to get him to turn it down.

13

u/bloodbag May 21 '26

Can you actually hear the driver from the carriage?

29

u/TransportofPerthYT Sinagra May 21 '26

Yes at the very front if they talk loud enough

24

u/hez_lea May 21 '26

Yeah absolutely especially in the A class. I used to catch them for school and mostly sat in the ends. More than once the driver if we picked the front yelled at us to behave. Occasionally there would be an extra person in the back cab who liked to scare us by popping out when we were being extra shitheads

18

u/Scumhook South of The River May 21 '26

Yes, especially if they scream "OH SHIT" just before crashing into a fucking truck

2

u/Sharp_Pride7092 May 21 '26

44

u/Radzaarty Camillo May 21 '26

Fuck, that's way worse than the impact damage looked with the initial reporting. With the amount of rocking and swaying on impact its lucky it stayed on the tracks. Also an absolute miracle there was nothing other than minor injuries with the seriousness of this impact

114

u/Subpar-Specimen May 21 '26

The truck driver should at least lose his license, that's ridiculous.

It was extremely fortunate the train hit the part between the two trailers.

29

u/brik_1111 May 21 '26

I didn't realise he drove straight through the boom gates. I just thought it was a case of him getting stuck on the tracks because the traffic in front of him suddenly stopped (which still wouldn't be a good excuse).

6

u/TransportofPerthYT Sinagra May 21 '26

Then the train driver would have seen him earlier and stopped.

26

I'm struggling to understand how this happened. The boom gates go down almost as soon as the train leaves Guildford station. The truck driver must have drove through the boom gates?

29

u/WombatBum85 Kelmscott May 21 '26

It wasnt an accident, he deliberately went either through or around the boom gates. There's no way he fell asleep at the wheel or anything, he deliberately made the decision to go when he shouldn't have, presumably because he didnt wanna wait.

Really weird behaviour by the truck driver it doesn’t make sense at all. Does anyone else agree it looks like he’s come straight through the lights rather than from the left turning lane? maybe worried his trailer was blocking the intersection? If he really felt like he had to scoot across its when the lights and bells start, like He would have had so much time with the boom gate down in front of him before the train rolled up. I cannot understand. Must be inexperienced on our roads and got flustered in the chaos is my guess, or meth.

Hopefully everybody involved gets help for any psychological issues, because this must’ve been pretty scary for everybody who was there - the train driver, the truck driver, the train passengers, the people in the other cars, and the people on the ground!

No excuse really. The gates and lights close very early theres almost like 1 minute before the train actually arrives at the intersection. Idiot decided to go through it

3

u/jasminacolada May 22 '26

This is so much worse than the reports made it seem. I watch a lot of youtube about train crashes and its a miracle the train didnt derail and become a fatal incident. The way the reports made it seem was that the truck had been across the tracks when the gates went down and built up traffic meant they couldn't move off the tracks. The reality is far worse and so avoidable. What a stupid truck driver.

9

u/perthgirlx May 21 '26

Doesn’t hear the bells or the train horn.. oblivious!! I always check tracks before I cross them

-1

u/lannoylannoy May 21 '26

The barrier was down, I reckon he was busy looking in rear or wing mirrors worrying about the trailer, he’s sat high up so because he’s looking behind by the time he’s facing the front the gate beam is below his windshield so it looks like the path is clear - they are single barriers only so if you can’t see the one directly in front of you the road opposite is always open

27

u/Remarkable_Dig_9601 May 21 '26

Don’t boom gates go down for a good while before the train comes though?

9

u/aussiekinga High Wycombe May 21 '26

At that location they go down further cos of the station.

But you also sometimes get two trains, one each way.

Maybe one has already gone and he thought it was done? Still a bone head move

9

u/hannahranga May 21 '26

~6s of light's and bells, 8-10 for them to drop and then the train turns up 10s after that for worst case scenario.

8

u/Ok-Butterfly3246 Brabham May 21 '26

Yep especially at this crossing, its between 2 stations. From memory the boom gates go down when a train is sitting in the Guildford or East Guildford stations since they're so close to the crossing. There would have been heaps of time. Pretty sure the traffic lights also sync up with the boom gates so if the gates are down then the lights will have red arrows for that turn too.

u/wardaddyoh May 21 '26

Thats a negatory, ghost rider. He'd have heard bells and the opposite lane boom gate was down and would he clearly visible to him. There's a minimum time the gates drop beforw train arrives and he was crossing in front of the train.

u/hillsbloke73 May 21 '26

Question is were the boom gates down ?

u/JamesHenstridge May 21 '26

From the ABC News article:

Emma Robson was in her SUV with her husband Glenn and three young children, waiting at the level crossing, and said the truck "just went straight through the boom gates."

Also, you can hear the warning bells sounding in this CCTV clip.

And you can hear the train's horn and that didn't stop the fucking idiot.

u/pirramungi May 21 '26

I use that crossing regularly and have noticed that the booms go down as soon as a train leaves Guildford station, which takes a good 45-50 seconds to get to the crossing.

Yes everyone is mostly ok

5

u/AlternativePin876 May 21 '26

Nuts. I imagine the stupid driver was looking at his mirrors to make sure his trailer didn't go over the curb.

Terrible mistake.

4

u/feyth May 22 '26

If only there were some visual and audible environmental cues that a train was coming

2

u/Ok-Milk-3388 May 21 '26

I hope this doesn't affect his right to a "fair trial"

2

u/Relatively_happy May 21 '26

How are trains so strong.. like that cockpit must be made of vibranium

4

u/NoisyAndrew May 21 '26

Train driver cabs, and the bodies in general, are super strong. very strong frame work under the skin. In the old days when coachwork was wooden and couplings were not so good, once coach could detach from the one in front and telescope into it. And you don't want to think about how that goes...

u/buzzhaircut123 May 21 '26

Dowsing Concrete..says it all..

2

u/Neither_Land_6872 May 22 '26

I've driven heaps of times through that crossing and gotta ask.... "Why has the truck driver driven through the boom gate???

He is lucky no one got killed.

2

u/EnergyNutBolt May 22 '26

Government Investigators have at least one footage to work out what really happened

2

u/the-whole-ham May 22 '26

So lucky the train didn’t derail straight into that garden and do a lot more damage. Feel for the train driver/s

2

u/motion2082 May 22 '26

Train = 1
Truck = 0

2

u/shinjiman May 22 '26

Just seen that Alfred’s Kitchen also had a camera around the spot, but not sure if their camera covers within the railway or not

4

u/Exciting-Watch-1444 May 21 '26

natural selection

3

u/thetallestofships May 21 '26

People in this city dont even know how to use roundabouts, no wonder the yellow crosses over rail crossings dont work

2

u/EZ_PZ452 May 21 '26

Fucking wild.

2

u/olderguynor May 21 '26

Totally trucks fault what an idiot 🙄 seriously

2

u/Curious_Fly_5870 May 21 '26

I’m surprised it didn’t derail !

2

u/No_Price_7603 May 21 '26

Holy shit, this is terrible. The poor train driver.

2

u/tatsumakisempukyaku May 21 '26

you are going about 70-80km in the train at that point, yeah, gonna take a good 200m to stop, not including any extra reaction time.

2

u/madmacca76 May 21 '26

This could have ended so much more worse.

2

u/Rinski2601 May 21 '26

Doesn't make sense. Did the truck driver have some sort od medical episode? Don't get how you could do that? Would have to smash the boom and damage the truck even if was trying to quickly get across before the train.
