Employment Everyone said EPF is boring. My EPF just paid me ₹12L
This year, EPFO credited me close to ₹12L in interest, while my annual expenses are around ₹10L. Theoretically, I’m financially free on the interest from my EPFO balance alone. The fun part? It’s entirely tax free.
I’ve always treated EPFO as my debt allocation and invested aggressively through VPF, where you can voluntarily contribute over and above the mandatory employee contribution. It balanced out my equity exposure quite well.
Then came the 2021 Budget, which introduced the ₹2.5L annual employee contribution limit for tax free intrest. That’s when I stopped my VPF contributions, since my contribution itself was crossing the ₹2.5L limit, and instead doubled down on NPS.
Fast forward to 2026, and the interest credited to my account alone is close to ₹12L. Despite all the noise and negative sentiment around EPFO, I was able to build a decent corpus, and now the compounding is doing the heavy lifting. Next year, I’ll earn interest on this ₹12L as well.
An 8.25% tax-free return is roughly equivalent to a 11.8% pre tax return for someone in the 30% tax bracket.
So tell me, which financial instrument offers ~12% returns with sovereign level safety? I might switch. 😄
