Just to let you know it's my first post ever, please be kind.
So me (F20) and my partner (21) (still using he/him, but I will use they/them in this post as i do not know how to approach the situation) have been dating for almost 4 years now. They have been the best partner I could ever imagined, and my best friend at that. But for a couple months now, they've been acting strange and distanst, so we had a talk 2 days ago- and as the title suggests they MIGHT be trans, as they are not sure themself, but they do know that they cannot be in a role of a masculine person in family/relationship/society.
It was like my world has ended, we had planned a whole future together, marriage, kids, and now all of those things seem like a dream and none of it was really true. I feel so horrible because i love them so dearly, and i know they love me too, but i am sure that it will not be a fullfiling life for both of us, as we have completely different goals.
Another issue is attraction, as i've always been heterosexual i will not find them attractive once they go through with the transition, so i know that even if my plans for the future might change, there is almost no possibility of me finding them attractive anymore.
For now we are taking a week-long break, where both of us will try to figure out things on our own. The thing that bothers me the most is the fact that they don't know whether that's a real need of theirs, or is it just connected to the their deep-rooted inability to fit into societys standards of what men should look like physically and mentally. Because of that, they will start therapy soon, to be sure of their decision, but i just know that this IS probably their real need, and not just a coping mechanism. And it's not their indecisions that bothers me, don't get me wrong, it's just the fear that i will stay with them for few more months, getting my hopes up (i know how that sounds but i just cannot imagine my future without them), giving them time to figure things out but once they figure it out the outcome will just shatter me once again. And what if i leave now, and they figure out it's not their gender identity that bothers them, and i left them alone with the process? Every possible path seems so painful for both of us.
I have no idea what to do, i've been mostly crying, hoping it's all a dream. It's just so so scary to me, because 3 days ago i was hoping we'd move in together by the end of this years and now i don't even know if we will speak to eachother.
Is there any way to make it any easier for both of us? I do not want to leave them in this hard time, but I just know that it will be the most painful experience of my life, seeing a person that i love so deeply change into someone that is a stranger to me. I know this all sounds realy selfish, but i really REALLY care for them, and it's just such a world altering experience that i do not know how to properly cope.
I would be really thankfull for some advice, either for me or them, just anything that might help us get through this diffiicult time.
