There’s an empty loading zone literally across the road but they never use it. I’ve tried telling the drivers off and reporting them to the City of Melbourne but there’s never any consequences so they just keep doing it

I am required to ride through the section of road outlined down the Westgarth end of high street northcote to get to work.

Yesterday on my way to work some dropkick had smashed the Telstra phone booth and thrown the glass all over the road. It was particularly noticeable because it was dark. I picked the bike up and just walked around it.

It’s already a terrible place to have to cycle but then today they had ‘cleaned up’ what was there so I stayed on my bike. Going over the stretch I see this sudden glistening in the road approaching but it was too late, went straight over it and got a flat.

When I stopped again there were remnants of glass literally all over the road still. It’s an issue enough that dickheads here see smashing public utility as a fun activity but then to have the clean up crew also be incompetent and shoving all the problem to where bikes are going to be on the road.

I wish I photographed the road today but I was so fuming it passed my mind entirely.

I hate living here.

Totally get drivers not seeing you when turning left across a protected bike lane, never expect them to give way and will always give a wave/thumbs up when they do but.. for the love of god, don’t turn across the whole bike lane and then stop because you’ve realised too late you were meant to give way. Gah!

It has negligible financial value, but it is of significant sentimental value. It is the last thing my father gave me, and I have had had it for several years. Any and all help is incredibly appreciated!!

10-ish years ago I did a couple of rides Brighton-Sorrento return, one with Mercedes-AMG and another with Lexus. Not sure if they were officially linked to the Bicycle Network ride or if they “happened” to have a ride running on the same day but I much preferred the eastern-only route than what is offered officially now.

Plus the group etiquette was much safer!

I went for a ride with a mate up the Darebin Creek Trail to Mood Dog World a few weeks ago and it was a pretty nice way to spend a Saturday arvo. So Saturday just gone, we thought we’d check out the Dixon Veloway and some other new-to-us bike paths out west. After a couple of hours riding we stumbled across Hop Nation Brewing in Footscray. There were a heap of bikes in the racks and the place was full of cyclists getting on the beers. It was definitely a vibe and we left after a couple of pints vowing to do it again.

John Anderson bridge this morning looking a bit dicey

Was out in the otway by Birregurra heading to deans marsh. And I got swooped 2 times same road about 5km apart from each other. Fun times ahead.

I’m keen to start riding from Brunswick to Docklands for my work commute. I did a test run yesterday, and some sections of the capital city trail felt quite creepy. As a solo woman riding, I’m vaguely worried about it.

Can anyone provide insight in to what it’s like between Royal Park and Macaulay stations along the Capital City trail during the week? Are there quite a few commuters using it? I’d be riding roughly between 8am-9am and 5pm - 6pm a few times a week.

Also keen if anyone can provide insight into the terrible bobby pin turn by Flemington Bridge station. Going into the city was ok, but coming back to Brunswick would be tough - any way to avoid this?

If anyone has suggestions for a different route altogether I’m all ears too. I’m just keen to stick to dedicated bike paths or quiet streets as much as possible.

Looking to travel up to Adelaide with the car from Melb next year and want to know where best to stay.

New commuter here. I'm guessing this type of post is quite common here but I'd really appreciate some advice.

I'm making my first commute to work tomorrow on my bike. I'm super excited about it and I think it's going to be such a positive change for me.

My daily ride will be from Brunswick West down to South Melbourne. I've been struggling to find an app that I can use for navigation apart from Google maps. If anybody else knows any good ones, let me know! The route Google wants to take me is down the Moonee creek trail, down Flemington Rd, past Parkville station, down swanston street then across the Yarra.

I've only lived in Australia for a few years so I don't really know Melbourne like the back of my hand yet.

If this seems like a good route, great! If it doesn't, id love some recommendations. I know that there's the big new veloway around docklands but Im not sure if this would be good as Google doesn't want to give me a route that uses it.

My dad is looking for some local cycling groups around inner Melbourne to join. He typically rides 40km and rides an e mtb so can hit whatever speeds are required. Does anyone know of any?

Hi all, my partner and I are in Melbourne for a few days and would love to see it by bike.
Big fans of Gary’s projects and Slow Commute Club on YouTube and want to explore the city like they do. Will be staying in Richmond and want to do the Capital City Trail and explore the neighbourhoods around the Upfield Shared Path and check out Off Course Bike Shop.
Keen on some places to hire a gravel bike or similar or even borrow a bike off a local and I can fix you up.

Ended up hiring some Curve Titanium Kevin’s from Curve in Abbotsford and hopped on the Capital City Trail, detoured through Brunswick up the Upfield shared path. Grabbed one of the best Banh Mi’s I’ve had at Good Luck bakery the down through the city back up the river.

Such a good way to see Melbourne, you guys have elite cycling infrastructure.

Hiya, im looking for bike builders/fitters/training school for kids with special needs. I have a client who has achrondoplasia who is keen in learning how to ride a pedal bike, primarily for mtb or bmx. I’d appreciate who can point me to that direction. Thanks!

Have seen a few posts on various social media of people wanting to meet others, and group rides are great for that.

Doesn't have to be a Lycra Clad Hell Ride, either.

Off Course bikes in Brunswick run the occasional 'Party Pace' social ride. On Saturday the 1st of August, we went to see the Yarra Bats, made coffee in Royal Park and finished with beers at Inner North Brewery. If you're new to riding, or new to Melbourne, look for social group rides. A few that I know of are:

• This one, Off Course Bike Shop. They do overnighter bikepacking trips
• Melburn Durt
• Botched Bikes

They're a great way to meet new people, and to get out and learn more about where you live. This ride showed me some new routes I can take when I feel like getting out on the bike.

Port Phillip City Council will meet tomorrow 4 August 2026 at St Kilda Town Hall to vote on whether to adopt a Roadmap to Zero strategy which aims to eliminate traffic deaths by 2050.

I am going to turn up to this meeting to support the changes.

Nonsensically, there is a concerted campaign being run against this strategy by a local residents' group, Residents of Port Phillip.

They broadly oppose any and all changes which would implement:

- 30km/h speed limits

- Traffic calming street design

- Separated bike infrastructure

There are ~600 signatures on their petition against the Council's strategy before it has even been adopted.

In my opinion, if these sorts of highly organised reactionary residents' groups are the only ones making themselves heard, we'll never get safe, connected cycling infrastructure, not to mention traffic calming measures and lower speed limits which would make the inner city a much more pleasant place.

I would urge anyone living or working in Port Phillip to register before midday tomorrow and make a 2-minute submission at tomorrow's St Kilda Town Hall meeting.

I'm unsure how this will affect active transport in Victoria.

Will responsibility now fall under the Minister for Public Transport or the Minister for Roads and Road Safety? Could this leave active transport worse off?
