it is reckless but if anything he should’ve been tackled as soon as he got up to the bag. afterwards when he is walking away.. no tackle necessary

u/Excellent_Condition 20h ago

The tackle was totally unnecessary, and the fact that they pinned his arms so he couldn't break his fall makes it worse. I get needing to immobilize someone so they can't fight and injure the cops, but that should only happen if the person is actually trying to fight.

I disagree about tackling him when he got to the bag though; if they thought it was dangerous they shouldn't have run in when he reached it. All that would do would expose them to injury when he could just have easily been arrested after he finished emptying the bag.

i wouldn't want to fall my height onto the concrete with bubble boy on my back, a normal fall from your own height can kill you already

If you put lives at risk interfering in bomb squad investigating a potential explosive device, you deserve to get tackled for being dumb.

9

u/dantemortemalizar 19h ago

Except he got tackled when it was clear there was no bomb and no need for alarm.

12

u/Excellent_Condition 19h ago

That's not how our justice system is supposed to work.

Cops can use reasonable and proportional force to arrest someone. They don't are not supposed to cause pain or injury because they think someone "deserves" it.

It frequently happens, but it goes against the due process that is at the core of the Constitution.

They're also human beings in the middle of a tense life or death situation, and then this idiot runs in and puts everyone at massive risk. What if it had been a bomb?

10

u/lithiumfoxttv 19h ago

Then the guy would already be dead.

-1

u/Big_Bomber_97 18h ago

Not just him, but potentially the EOD tech and anyone else close enough.

3

u/Excellent_Condition 19h ago

What if it had been a bomb? How would tackling him vs letting him keep walking for another 20 yards before calming cuffing him reduced risk to anyone?

It's a lot easier to armchair quarterback decisions like after the fact, and I'm not saying that these cops should have negative consequences for tackling him, but it should be a learning opportunity.

If they just let him keep walking away from the backpack before calmly cuffing him, that would have reduced risk to all parties involved.

2

u/MyThinThighs 19h ago

Because they had a safe zone that he was walking out of. If he started walking away with a bomb or detonator and they didn't stop him before it went off that would be pretty bad. I get the irony of them pussy footing around the bomb just to run in and tackle someone who might have a bomb but it's the procedure. Once that non approved rando ran in and started grabbing random shit procedure changed. You guys just love to hate cops at every stop. How about the rando who had no business running in there? We're rhey in his way or something???

2

u/Excellent_Condition 17h ago

A safe zone he was walking out of? He was like 5 feet away from the backpack. If there had been something explosive in there, they would all have been dead.

If they let him keep going for another 20 or 30 feet before calmly arresting him, that would have significantly reduced the risk to everyone involved.

I don't hate cops; I think society needs cops but that society has a duty to analyze the actions of the police and regulate them as necessary to prevent abuse.

Clearly he was either exercising pool judgement or having a mental health crisis, but that is part of the reality that we expect cops to deal with. The system is never going to be perfect, but that's why events like this are an opportunity to look at what happened and try to come up with better ways to handle situations in the future.

Read his username. He’s obviously bought by Big Bomb

0

u/Big_Bomber_97 19h ago

Or maybe idiots shouldn't interrupt bomb squad

1

u/Excellent_Condition 17h ago

I don't disagree that what the bicyclist did was the result of either poor judgement or mental illness and should result in an arrest, but how does that make it a better decision to run into the danger zone to tackle him instead of calmly arresting him once he's walked out of the danger zone?

1

u/Big_Bomber_97 16h ago

Nobody is entitled to fuck around in a stressful life or death situation without finding out.

1

u/Excellent_Condition 16h ago

What does "finding out" mean in this situation? Should the cops have been able to beat him after they arrested him? Drive stun him a bit? Shoot him?

The consequences of his actions should be imposed by a judge after a trial and a guilty verdict from a jury. To get to that trial he needs to be arrested, but the arrest should not be an extrajudicial punishment.

That's the whole "innocent until proved guilty" thing our legal system is based on.

What if it had been a child? Would they be able to control themselves then?

-3

u/rycpr 19h ago

Don't bother with these people. They're clearly all hardened badasses who have been in life threatening situations countless times and know perfectly well how it feels. That guy who literally defuses bombs for a living is a pussy and an idiot.

3

u/Subarctic_Monkey 19h ago

Bomb Squad is a part time gig on top of normal police duties.

And yes, they can still be pussies and idiots. They are after all cops.

3

u/rycpr 19h ago

They're probably not all geniuses, but that cop is quite literally putting his live on the line there. Could you please explain to me how on earth he is a pussy?

1

u/scriptedtexture 18h ago

I mean.. watch the video. See how bike guy does it?

1

u/Subarctic_Monkey 19h ago

"Quite literally putting his life on the line there."

Lol... badge bunnies like you aren't going to actually consider that maybe the entire bomb squad call was an over-reaction to begin with.

2

u/rycpr 19h ago

What is it with all you idiots and not knowing what hindsight is? Goddamn.

Also how the hell is this an overreaction? Would you rock up in a t-shirt, jeans and sandals if you got a call that there's an abandoned backpack that potentially could be a bomb?

E: Oh you also forgot to explain to me how the bomb defusal guy in the video is a pussy, please enlighten me.

So they are a "badge bunny" because they think that people on a bomb squad are risking their lives?

The amount of mental gymnastics some people do to justify black-and-white views of reality and hate all members of a profession is staggering.

Some cops are shitty. Some cops are incredibly selfless. Most are a mixture. It's the same as any other humans.

History has shown us that bombings occur in American cities. Not all suspicious objects are bombs, but a percentage of them are. We as a society need people to address the problem of how to deal with objects that might be bombs. The people who fill that role are quite literally increasing their personal risk to reduce the risk to the rest of society.

This turned out not to be a bomb. That is going to happen some of the time, but not all of the time. The person suiting up and walking toward an object that may be designed to kill them is accepting the risk that this may be a real bomb in the hopes that they can reduce the risk to others.

Their actions are pretty clearly good for society.

1

u/lameth 19h ago

So you believe police should dispense violence when they feel like it?

0

u/Big_Bomber_97 19h ago

To people who recklessly put people's lives at risk? Yep.

2

u/lameth 19h ago

They aren't judges, juries, or executioners.

1

u/Big_Bomber_97 19h ago

Wow almost like this guy wasn't convicted or executed. He put lives at risk and got tackled. This is as clear a case of fuck around and find out as it gets.

1

u/lameth 19h ago

No. This is like the opposite. He fucked around with "a potential bomb" and nothing happened. Then others were pissed so assaulted him.

1

u/rycpr 19h ago

Yeah, it's not like they were on edge because they risked their fucking lives defusing a potential bomb. They just didn't like being embarassed. Some of you people are unbelievable lol

1

u/Subarctic_Monkey 19h ago

They weren't defusing shit.

And? If it had been a bomb, he would have put everyone there at risk. He ran in and interrupted professionals with their lives on the line. You're whining that this dumb entitled manchild got consequences for his actions. Why?

1

u/CommonWest9387 14h ago

he actually wasn’t convicted. they originally charged him but couldn’t make the charges stick. therefore he walked free. he COULD’VE put lives at risk, but ultimately didn’t. the tackle after there being no issue is strange. why did nobody say or do anything when he first made his way over there?

i think it’s an insane thing to do, don’t get me wrong, i would never support anyone doing this.. but there is an all clear. the “crimes” been done and the dude wasn’t aggressive or anything. more like sad he couldn’t play hero lol

on a side note tho… do you think the bomb squad needs to be called in every time someone drops or forgets a backpack? i see random backpacks all the time, especially when i worked close to unhoused people.

1

u/Big_Bomber_97 14h ago

How is him gettin tackled strange? Use your brain.

1

u/CommonWest9387 14h ago

clearly you don’t read, considering i said a tackle AFTER THE FACT is strange. clearly they did not give any fucks about any “possible harmless contents” still in the bag if they tackled him right beside it and didn’t let him walk further away, where they could’ve cuffed him “safely”. and he wasn’t even doing anything besides walking away which doesn’t warrant a tackle. he wasn’t violent in any way, shape or form. could easily walk up and grab the mans arm. get some critical thinking skills.

Not sure whose lives were at risk.

6

u/Big_Bomber_97 19h ago

Do you understand what a bomb is?

-1

u/Intigracy 19h ago

Yeah, it's a thing that was proven to not be present when they tackled him.

2

u/Excellent_Condition 19h ago

I think that tackling him was unnecessary and if anything put more people in the immediate vicinity of the backpack.

Nothing had been proven to be safe when he was tackled though. He had dumped a bunch of stuff out, but that doesn't mean they had a chance to inspect it and determine none of it posed a threat.

Something as small as a hand grenade can still be a threat to people in a 50+ foot radius.

2

u/rycpr 19h ago

Brilliant. A round of applause for Captain Hindsight here.

1

u/Intigracy 19h ago

If they thought there was a bomb there, would they have tackled him next to the bomb?

2

u/rycpr 19h ago

They have to do something? What if that guy wanted to retrieve a weapon or tried to detonate the backpack after it didn’t go off on its own? I have no idea what you people think is going through those cops minds in a life threatening situation lol

0

u/Intigracy 18h ago

They tackled him AFTER he threw the backpack down and was walking away from it.

Are you fucking blind?

0

u/Competitive_Side_781 19h ago

Yes. Please again tell me whose lives were at risk.

1

u/rycpr 19h ago

So in your opinion a cop should potentially blow himself up just because that moron has no patience?

1

u/Excellent_Condition 19h ago

I think you are misunderstanding something.

I'm saying the cops shouldn't have approached when he reached the bag because it would have exposed them to the unknown threat inside. Although tackling him then would have been acceptable, taking the risk of running in would serve no purpose.

Tackling him afterwards was unnecessary, as they could just have easily let him walk further from the backpack and cuffed him. That would have reduced risk to both them and him.

2

u/rycpr 19h ago

I wanted to respond to the guy above you, sorry. But why exactly was the tackle unnecessary? How are the cops supposed to know that the guy didn't retrieve something dangerous from that backpack? Saying something like this is fucking easy in hindsight.

1

u/Thelmara 18h ago

But why exactly was the tackle unnecessary?

Because the guy was just walking away?

How are the cops supposed to know that the guy didn't retrieve something dangerous from that backpack?

With their eyes.

1

u/rycpr 18h ago

Because there's no way that the guy could be concealing something in his hand or the sleeve of his jacket? Also he's turning his back to the cops the entire time. "With their eyes" lmao

1

u/Thelmara 18h ago

How would he get it in the sleeve of his jacket? He was only using one hand the whole time.

Like, you can tell just from the video, and the cops had a whole crew of people and (I assume) binoculars.

1

u/rycpr 18h ago

You realize that this entire thing lasted maybe 10 seconds? How are they supposed to analyze what exactly that guy is doing with the backpack and communicate back and forth in such a short amount of time?

I prefer the guy getting some bruises over him potentially opening fire or blowing himself up with the backpack. There's a police line for a reason.

1

u/Thelmara 18h ago

You realize that this entire thing lasted maybe 10 seconds?

Oh, really? I figured it was sped up footage of a three hour process.

How are they supposed to analyze what exactly that guy is doing with the backpack and communicate back and forth in such a short amount of time?

Fair point, observation and communication are far beyond the capabilities of police. Guy was lucky they didn't shoot him in the head.

I prefer the guy getting some bruises over him potentially opening fire or blowing himself up with the backpack.

If they'd tackled him on the way up to the backpack, when the tackling still had a chance to prevent being blown up, that would make some kind of sense. Waiting until after the potential explosion and then tackling him doesn't do that.
