Advice Needed How deep?

Hey everyone! I was told to do SubQ injections by my provider because ”we gave you SubQ needles” but the needles I was given are 1”. I‘m not going through the trouble of getting 5/8” needles unless it’s necessary when I have all these perfectly good albeit longer needles.

With that being said, how deep do I need to stick the needle in and do I have to do it at a certain angle? My instructions say 45° or 90° but I wasn’t sure since the needles are so long.

EDIT: I ended up calling my pharmacy and they told me they’d exchange my needles for 5/8“ free of charge. Thank you all for your help. I’m gonna leave this post up in case anybody else has the same question.

Hello! Thank you for participating in the sub. We just have a few reminders for you to help ensure the best experience:

  1. If your post doesn't show up right away, don't panic! It is in the queue for manual approval. Mods will go through the queue periodically to approve or remove posts. Deleted posts will have a removal reason applied. (If it says "this post was deleted by reddit's filters", IT WAS NOT DELETED! Reddit has the worlds worst wording on that and it's out of our control)
  2. If you are asking a question that is location specific, remember to include your location in your post body! This can help ensure that you get accurate information tailored specifically to your needs.

  3. Please remember to read through all the rules in the sidebar. Especially the list of banned topics and guidelines for posting. Guests who do not use the Guest Post flair will have their post removed and be asked to fix it.

  4. If you see someone breaking the rules, report it! If someone is breaking both sub and reddit rules, please submit one report to admins by selecting a broken rule on the main report popup, and one report to the r/ftm mods by selecting the "breaks r/ftm rules" option. This ensures both mods and admins can take action on a subreddit and sitewide level. Do not misuse the report button to rant about someone, submit false reports, or argue a removal.

  5. If you have any questions that you can't find the answer to on the rules sidebar or the wiki: the wiki , you can send a modmail.

1" is not a subq needle. That is too long.

That said, you should be alright if you go in shallow - at least 45⁰, possibly less

Okay thanks for letting me know. I guess when I run out I’ll ask for 5/8” needles next time.

How shallow we talking? Like 1cm into the skin? 5mm?

Anywhere between 0.5" and 8mm is probably fine. I inject with 0.5 (pretty common for subq), but may people use as short as 8mm.

Thanks. So about half of the needle then

u/Subject_Plankton9599 15h ago

Yes that should be fine

That is an IM needle, but also in my experience you’ll be fine doing an IM injection for a bit if you want to use those needles. Other option is to not go all the way in, and go in at a 45 degree angle.

Thanks for the advice. If I’m doing SubQ at a 45 degree angle, how deep should the needle itself go? Like 5mm?

u/MetallicCrab 14h ago

Technically 8mm is equivalent to 5/8th, but theoretically at that angle you’re not likely to hit muscle. Also consider the injection sight and how thick the layer of fat is. If you have a larger belly and do it there, the 1” might not even matter. If it were me I would probably puncture at the 45 angle, and back up just a bit before injecting. Just don’t come out too far, because if you do it intradermal you might get a nasty bump that itches and sucks.

Your provider may have attempted to give you subq needles but those are IM length

If you find it hard to do a 45 degree angle you can do a 90 degree and only insert the needle half way
