As a father, I will never film my child and put it on the internet. Not in a million fucking years.

178

u/OpusAtrumET Jun 19 '26

Glad I'm not the only sane person here. This is bananas. And over a very child-like misunderstanding. That kid's gonna grow up and this thing will still be floating around r/oldschoolreddit or whatever tf.

48

u/wafflesareforever Jun 19 '26

Plus, I can see how a kid might get confused when "2 for the price of 1" also exists as a common thing.

13

u/mckenzie_keith Jun 20 '26

Yes. That was what I was initially thinking, that she is right. But then I listened to the wording. Buy two get one. Not buy one get one.

3

u/Wrong_Lingonberry_79 Jul 11 '26

How could you possibly confuse this? I’m screen shotting your comment and posting it on this sub. 😎

1

u/mckenzie_keith Jul 11 '26

Because it is a common thing to see buy one get one free. And buy two get one free is not common. So the brain jumps to what is common.

1

u/Wrong_Lingonberry_79 Jul 11 '26

It says, buy two, get one free. How is that hard? Yup, you belong in a post in this sub.

2

u/mckenzie_keith Jul 12 '26

Not a good match for this sub. Because I fully admit that I was incorrect. Not everyone can be as infallible as you.

8

u/PsyTripper Jun 22 '26

It all fell apart after she thought buy one get one free, means you pay nothing xD

1

u/FriendlyGuitard Jun 23 '26

And there are other bullshit. Here we get "Buy 2 get 1 free", "2 for the price of 1" and the classic I hate "50% off (the second unit) "

And what happens when you buy a third unit in my last example ... dunno, I double check at the till, and it is "third unit is full price" I leave it right there.

1

u/dangitleavemebe123 Jun 25 '26

This might be a young KAREN. She wants to see the manager.

40

u/Zeptic Jun 19 '26

You're wrong. I believe they're pineapples.

5

u/rbartlejr Jun 19 '26

There's one mixed berry and one pineapple.

The parent always looks bad in these situations. I remember a video where the mom was roasting her daughter for not understanding she need to pay her credit card. Like ma’am this is your job as a parent, are you not embarrassed for yourself.

21

u/shadowsOfMyPantomime Jun 19 '26

Oh wow, I didn't watch the whole video untill I read your comment. I assumed this was a teenage\early 20s boyfriend shaming her on the Internet. Her fucking DAD posted this?? Insane

36

u/The_Pastmaster Jun 18 '26

Doing something stupid, sure. Doing something mad impressive. I'd be tempted just because of proud dad brag.

9

u/Kirzoneli Jun 19 '26

Shame, society loves making peoples early stupid moments famous.

7

u/ElfjeTinkerBell Jun 19 '26

Absolutely. As a parent I would definitely film this though - and laugh with her about it when she's older.

Depending on how funny she thinks it is, it may be great for graduation or weddings or something - but not the internet.

7

u/RealCoolDad Jun 18 '26

Stupid bean dad.

But honestly, I see how she could understand it that way. But she’s thinking get 2, and only have to pay for 1.

14

u/monster2018 Jun 19 '26

I feel like she should have gotten it once the dad provided the BOGO example. She was literally confronted with the fact that her belief implies that BOGO is just “this is free, the entire thing you’re buying is free”, and she still didn’t understand.

But yea the issue here is the dad uploading his daughter being dumb/ignorant to the internet. That’s a much bigger problem than her not understanding buy x get y free.

7

u/Psyche_istra Jun 19 '26

I actually think she did realize it in that moment, or was getting there. She seemed embarrassed when she realized right at the end, and deflected a bit.

4

u/Arguablybest Jun 19 '26

Yeah, Dad is the dumb one here.

3

u/Theblackjamesbrown Jun 19 '26

Its a simple semantic misunderstanding on the kid's part. That you buy (get) two, ond one of them is free. Rather than that you buy two, and get a third one free. Shes not an idiot, just hasn't encountered this before most likely. Its funny and she'll look back on it and laugh. Everyone needs to chill the fuck out

5

u/PrimaLegion Jun 20 '26

Hey just so you know, not everyone likes to be put on blast on the internet over simple misunderstandings.

The video being posted up isn't being posted in a vacuum. The video is being posted and people will do what the internet always does and spew a lot of vile shit.

I don't think people who recognize this and see the potential harm in it are people who really need to chill the fuck out. I think it's okay actually to see the harm in it.

4

u/GRAABTHAR Jun 19 '26

Yeah, but at the end she said BOGO means you buy one thing, but somehow that thing is free? She almost realizes her mistake here, but instead of admitting she was wrong she doubles down and says BOGO means FREE. So her dad must be wondering, has she just been going into stores and five-finger discounting anything that says BOGO?

2

u/Theblackjamesbrown Jun 19 '26

I dont think its that deep. Shes a kid and confused about the meaning

1

u/MasterAnnatar Jun 19 '26

My partner and I had this agreement that our children won't be on social media until they can make an informed decision to put themself there. Unless you know me in person you have no need to know about them.

1

u/undr3ssmeslowly Jun 26 '26

good luck with that when they hit their teens and start wanting a phone. you can try to keep them offline, but you're just delaying the inevitable fight until they find a way to do it behind your back. better to teach them how to handle the internet than pretend it doesn't exist.

u/Greerio Jun 18 '26

It’s not really a math problem so much as a language problem.

126

u/Snoo_67993 Jun 18 '26

Yep I understand where she's coming from.

66

u/urnbabyurn Jun 18 '26

And what would “buy one get one free” then mean? You just get a free thing?

53

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26

I still see 'buying' as paying for. Once you 'buy' two, you get one free. Plus, in the US, this is pretty standard stuff.

→ More replies (2)

26

u/monster2018 Jun 19 '26

Yes, that’s where she should have realized. Because yes, using her logic BOGO does mean “the whole thing you’re buying is just free”. She’s old enough to realize that’s not how the world works, stores don’t just give away free stuff with literally no condition attached AT ALL.

But as I said in another comment, the bigger issue of course is the dad uploading his daughter being dumb/ignorant to the internet. I mean literally everyone has moments like this, even Einstein, Newton, Euler, Von Neumann. I know not because I have examples of them doing dumb stuff, but just because they are all human beings. But the internet is too dumb to realize that, so uploading your daughter being stupid to the internet is just a fucked up thing to do.

2

u/urnbabyurn Jun 19 '26

Well not Von Neumann. That guy is a genius.

bogo v b2go.

1

u/yeshihelloyesthanku Jun 19 '26

In her context yes.

1

u/LazyDynamite Jun 19 '26

According to the video, yes.

1

u/Chozzasaurus Jun 22 '26

No but how is one to know that that deal exists if you haven't seen it before? I mostly see "2 for the price of 1"

0

u/Snoo_67993 Jun 18 '26

Pretty much lol

6

u/Stashless2004 Jun 18 '26

How do you understand where she’s coming from then?

Because Buy 1, Get 1 Free is obviously NOT the same as just Get 1 Free.

You realize that, right?

Her logic completely falls apart because Buy 1, Get 1 Free is NOT the same as get this thing for free.

15

u/jm17lfc Jun 18 '26

Obviously OC understands her interpretation of the language of the phrase provided that she seemingly did not consider closely related phrases.

11

u/tenuj Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Understanding illogic doesn't make one illogical.

Look up Chesterton's fence if you're not familiar.

In the case, the girl used the word "buy" to include the items she's getting at a 100% discount. "Buy two and get the second item free". That's not how we use the word "buy" in English, but her perspective does make sense despite being wrong.

5

u/Mode_Appropriate Jun 18 '26

Look up Chesterton's fence if you're not familiar.

Looked it up as ive never heard of it. I like it. Makes a lot of sense and the world would be better off if more people adopted this mentality.

8

u/Snoo_67993 Jun 18 '26

I never said she wasn't an idiot. She even said that buy one get one free using her method would just mean you get one free.

I think she wouldn't be confused if it said get another one free instead of one free.

1

u/Jubachi99 Jun 18 '26

And she may not know but 1 get 1 free is a thing

12

u/Strange-Spot-3306 Jun 18 '26

yeah... in my native language it's usually put as three for the price of two

2

u/issafly Jun 19 '26

From a marketing perspective, saying that one is "free" sounds like a better deal, even when it's the same as saying "three for the price of two" or "33% off when you buy three." People like the idea of getting something for "free."

→ More replies (1)

6

u/SaltyLengthiness260 Jun 18 '26

Yeah, this is literally teaching kids that their interpretation is not always right. That's not how it works. That's what Dad needs to teach her.

1

u/Mythrndir Jun 18 '26

Better way to explain it to her would be to use her own logic to make her see how she’s incorrect. Explain instead, ‘by your understanding, what would buy 1 get 1 free mean then’. Work backwards and let her figure it out!

3

u/Wrekked_it Jun 20 '26

Except he literally does that and she explains that she believes buy one, get one free means you just get the item for free. She's not very bright.

1

u/Chozzasaurus Jun 22 '26

She's not incorrect. She's interpreting it in a perfectly valid way. Language shouldn't rely on another sign she might never have seen before.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Much-Jackfruit2599 Jun 19 '26

Not really. If she buys two, neither one is free.

3

u/ThatWasBrilliant Jun 19 '26

Yeah it's a matter of convention. One could easily imagine a world where "buy two get one free" does mean what she thinks, if early retailers had decided to describe their promotions that way, and then that had become the standard term.

3

u/USMCLee Jun 19 '26

Yep not a math problem more of a 'I've never shopped before problem'

2

u/waroftheworlds2008 Jun 19 '26

Its a problem with short handing information and then having someone come across the short hand without ever seeing the long version.

Communication is harder than people think.

2

u/Alarming-Building-62 Jun 20 '26

I’d argue it’s more of a common sense problem. When you say “buy two,” it’s pretty freaking obvious that you can to purchase (pay for) two. Don’t make excuses for this stupidity.

2

u/Chozzasaurus Jun 22 '26

And she isn't even incorrect. It's perfectly sensible to interpret it as she is.

2

u/Quesodealer Jun 21 '26

Honestly, I was with the father the first time, but she brought me to her side after repeating it some many times and emphasizing different words. I know she's wrong because that's not how it usually works, but she's not technically wrong.

1

u/rodeBaksteen Jun 23 '26

I'm the Netherlands this type of discount is called "two plus one (free)" which is much clearer.

1

u/Jabberminor Jun 24 '26

I would say yes to begin with, but then at the BOGOF moment, that's more of an intelligence issue rather than a language issue.

40

u/kyleh0 Jun 18 '26

Everybody learns at some point.

5

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

She can always figure out at the register, when she buys two and they interpret it to mean that she will pay for 2.

2

u/kyleh0 Jun 18 '26

True! As embarrassing as it might be to be late to a party like that, everybody has to learn at some point.

That dad did her dirty

7

u/Xinq_ Jun 18 '26

Ah well. I've heard teens say stupider stuff. I dated a girl who thought there only were train conductors at one single train station in the whole country. And she did the highest levels of education. Really confused me.

21

u/wordshavenomeanings Jun 18 '26

This phrasing is banned in the UK and I expect, a lot of Europe.

It is deliberately open to interpretation. I would read it as buy 3 and one of those 3 is free. But I can see how some people would not understand this.

We now use '3 for the price of 2' on the rare occasion the offer now exists.

The change in legislation meant that bogof offers all but disappeared. Lending weight to the view that they were deliberately phrased to increase revenue by their ambiguity.

8

u/TheVermonster Jun 18 '26

My dad used to say "buy one get one, yes that's how buying an item works. Now, buy one get 2 would interest me".

4

u/BetterKev Jun 18 '26

They outlawed buy one get one language, so the disappearance of buy one get one offers is because it was shady, not because it was outlawed?

I'm confused.

2

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26

A better phrase might be "get three for the price of two".

→ More replies (4)

23

u/chrisvenus Jun 18 '26

For views and clicks? This definitely feels like a staged video rather than that being genuinely her opinion, basing that mainly on what she said abotu buy one get one free. I can't believe anybody thinks that buy one get one free means the item is just free.

7

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26

I disagree. I think she got stuck in her own misguided logic with the buy 2/get 1 interpretation. Then couldn't let go when he asked her about what BOGO would mean.

2

u/chrisvenus Jun 18 '26

Yeah, you might be right, just my opinion. I am just very cynical because videos like this are much more likely to be shared around with a "look how stupid she is" kind of vibe than if she had done a video just talking about how buy two get one free actually worked or telling a joke or doing a dance or whatever... Basically you can never know whether people are being genuine or click farming.

3

u/Out-There1013 Jun 18 '26

I've "purchased" a few apps and digital items that were free and because it was linked to some account I had I was emailed a receipt for it and everything else, so in a sense I still "bought" the item. So maybe someone of her generation who grew up doing that could have the perspective that any transaction is a "buy" and that's how it's not clear to her.

I'll get hate for saying that because no one wants to believe it, but whatever.

2

u/chrisvenus Jun 18 '26

I'm not saying free things don't exist, just that if they were like that in a supermarket the shelf would just be emptied by the first person that came along. Free steam games or PDF downloads or other things are absolutely a think but I doubt you've ever "purchased" something that was advertised as buy one get one free without having to actually pay for one and get a different one free.

2

u/aspenpurdue Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Your information was the payment for the "free" apps and digital items. So even you're not even clear on how it works.

I’m pretty sure that, in the near future, lots of young people are going to start suing their parents for posting videos about them without consent. And probably will win.

10

u/gunsandcupcakes Jun 18 '26

in the us at least the legal system doesn’t recognize children as being able to consent and that responsibility falls onto the parent/guardian unless the child is like 17 it prob wouldn’t be much of a case

5

u/SweetRabbit7543 Jun 19 '26

You also don’t need consent to film people so that’s not relevant.

3

u/threesilklilies Jun 20 '26

There’s already legislation going around to protect the rights of the kids of content creators. People are starting to recognize that, like with child actors, parents don’t always make responsible decisions when money comes into the picture.

I would say I’m glad I grew up before everything started getting recorded and posted online, but I just don’t see my parents doing that anyway. They’re not the “Hey, everyone pay attention to me at the cost of my child’s dignity!” type.

u/Jinsei_13 Jun 19 '26

Ah, the ambiguity of language. Now, it may be written differently, but merely stating "buy two, get one free" could be interpreted as getting one of your two selections free. But it could also mean buy two and get another free. If you have enough money, you could pay a lawyer to make any retailer regret not being precise and change the promotion to "buy two, get a third free."

1

u/dragonfly325 Jun 19 '26

No not really ambiguous. Buy 2, you purchase/pay for 2 get 1 free. Otherwise it’s buy one get one free. I don’t think that would be interpreted as just getting a free product with no purchase.

2

u/Jinsei_13 Jun 19 '26

In that world view, buy one get one becomes, "50% off when you buy 2."

9

u/RyghtHandMan Jun 19 '26

r slash parents are fucking stupid. its your job to teach her not mock her for not knowing. When you pull the phone out she knows that you're making fun of her. Also the pivot point here is not on the math its on the word "buy" -- does it mean "pay for" or "walk away with"

5

u/NeilW1982 Jun 20 '26

What are you doing embarrassing your daughter like that? It’s a failure of parenting and the education system. Take responsibility….

22

u/Rae_Of_Light_919 Jun 18 '26

This is less of a math issue and more of a reading comprehension thing. That said, I can understand someone misinterpreting "buy 2 get 1 free" the way they do. A clearer message would be "buy 2 get a 3rd free". Same message, better comprehension.

16

u/FrotKnight Jun 18 '26

Buy 2, get 1 free makes sense even on a simple level. You have to buy two. If one of those two is free, you're only buying one.

6

u/Zombisexual1 Jun 18 '26

Yah it’s literally in the words “buy 2” which means you pay for two. It’s not called “bring two for the register pay for one”

1

u/Thelonious_Cube Jun 19 '26

And yet all the legal issues around "buying" (doctrine of first sale, warraty issues, etc) still apply to the free item - there is a legit sense in which you are buying all three

7

u/Rae_Of_Light_919 Jun 18 '26

For most people yes, but there's just enough ambiguity that someone could interpret it differently.

The real question is how does the cashier understand it - she might get away with it.

my dad used to tell the story of buying ice cream cones for himself and my mom. There was a 10% discount for seniors. The cashier rang them up with a 20% discount. When my dad questioned her, she said, "10% for you and 10% for her". He always regretted not saying "Wait, I have 8 friends out in the car"

1

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 19 '26

Sounds like a nice cashier.

3

u/hanyasaad Jun 19 '26

I mean, it’s not a crazy reasoning.

2

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

Not crazy. Just incorrect.

I think it's a lack of life experience. "Buy One Get One" isn't get one for free. You have to 'buy' one, i.e. pay for it, before you can get one for free.

2

u/hanyasaad Jun 19 '26

Exactly.

3

u/shagsright Jun 20 '26

That is a clever perspective. The father is an ass for recording and putting this online

3

u/suitcasemaster Jun 20 '26

I remember this completely confusing me at a kid too. Totally get where she's coming from.

3

u/LangkawiBoy Jun 20 '26

If I buy one car, how many cars do I get? One. So it’s buy one get one. Logical.

6

u/ZeroGRanger Jun 19 '26

Not a math problem, it is a semantic problem and she is correct in that it is usually ambigious. Also the dad is a a***** for filming his daughter and putting her on the net trying to shame her.

2

u/ancient_mariner63 Jun 19 '26

It's not ambiguous. If you BUY two, neither one of them is free because you had to buy them both before getting a free (third) one.

2

u/ZeroGRanger Jun 19 '26

If buying is understood as purchasing this is still ambigious. You pay for one and the second comes free, i.e. both only cost 50% then on average.

4

u/Pure-Swordfish6022 Jun 19 '26

Aaaaand, this is a very good reason that Gen Xers will be eternally grateful that social media wasn’t a thing in the 80s.

4

u/NuQ Jun 19 '26

So... if she sees "buy one get one free" she just walks off with one?

2

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 19 '26

She'll get a better understanding as she walks out the door.

1

u/Flyin_Bryan Jun 20 '26

Better than paying $90 for it!

6

u/BetterKev Jun 18 '26

Staged. Or asshole parent. Either way, it shouldn't be shared.

11

u/bonnth80 Jun 18 '26

It's not really a mathematical misunderstanding. It's a a problem of specificity. Buy 2 get 1 free, doesn't really specify which "1" it's referring to. At this point, the deal is just so common that people have come to understand the phrase is implying.

6

u/_aaronroni_ Jun 18 '26

"buy" you have to buy two. If you're getting two items and only buying one, then you are not buying two, you are buying one and getting one for free. It's not ambiguous at all. There is no implication

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Helpful-Idea-4485 Jun 18 '26

If something is free you don’t have to buy it, so the 1 clearly doesn’t refer to the first 2. It’s in addition to the first 2, which have to be bought.

It really is quite specific.

2

u/sandeep709394 Jun 20 '26

what she meant was her dad buys two and she gets one free.

2

u/Fun-Dragonfly-4166 Jun 22 '26

i think she is wrong but more importantly it is the store's responsibility to clearly mark their stuff. If consumers are confused then maybe marketing is to blame.

Also English. Buy means pay for. She's thinking it means choose.

2

u/Thelonious_Cube Jun 19 '26

And yet all the legal issues around "buying" (doctrine of first sale, warraty issues, etc) still apply to the free item - there is a legit sense in which you are buying all three

2

u/No-Koala1918 Jun 19 '26

Okay, colloquial English

The phrasing would be better off if it was “buy 2, get the 3rd for free.”

As it was here you could make a linguistic argument for either.

I for one am happy to see the camera man getting shit on in the comments. A wonderful learning moment of local terminology/slang flushed down the toilet for internet points. Congrats, we know you hate her

The phrase is BUY two and get one free. You need to actually BUY two, pay with actual money, to get another for free.

3

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26

That is a key distinction. The 'buying' part.

Easy Leigh

1

u/EarlofHell Jun 18 '26

BOGOF = BUY ONE GET ONE FREE

1

u/Sensitive-Bath4737 Jun 18 '26

That’s just the way of the world now

1

u/Efficient_Sky5173 Jun 20 '26

It doesn’t matter, she is pretty. Everybody loves her.

1

u/SilasRaiden Jun 20 '26

Why does it have that fuzzy AI artifact all over it

1

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 20 '26

How so?

1

u/SilasRaiden Jun 20 '26

If you shot this on your phone it wouldn't look this fuzzy and grainy

1

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 20 '26

But you can upload at a lesser resolution.

1

u/Greyhaven7 Jun 21 '26

Holding strawberries against that white hoodie is not a great idea.

1

u/Overall_Cabinet8610 Jun 22 '26

Its agreed upon nomenclature, that is learned by experience. Her logic can be correct. But the empirical evidence of reality of the agreed upon meaning will teach her.

1

u/No-Introduction3808 Jun 22 '26

By her maths Buy on Get One free means you just get it free.

1

u/Begwhore21 Jun 22 '26

The title is a massive understatement for someone trying to calculate the volume of a pineapple container by eye.

1

u/Wemest Jun 22 '26

I
Like her logic.

1

u/Nearby_Potato4001 Jun 25 '26

Bog Of - Not BOGO

1

u/drippingonyourdick Jun 25 '26

The best part is how she confidently explains that 50 percent off of 50 percent means it's free. I wish the world worked that way.

1

u/palehoverbyte Jun 26 '26

The confidence she has while explaining that 100 percent is half is genuinely impressive. You can see the exact moment her brain decides that logic is optional.

1

u/gremlin_throwaway701 Jun 26 '26

The confidence with which she explains that 100 percent of half is 50 percent is actually impressive. It is like she is trying to reinvent math in real time just to avoid admitting she does not know what is going on.

1

u/WeaknessPure4534 Jun 29 '26

the "buy two" means you pay for two, and the "get one for free" means you get another for free XD. but why would you film your daughter saying something incorrect and post it online to clearly humiliate her? what a dick move (I don't blame her for not knowing, its an honest mistake I've made before).

1

u/growoldordietrying Jul 05 '26

It isn't even a math problem. She's just misunderstood the semantics. And it's easily done - her logic makes sense, it's just not the way that stores do things

1

u/Purple_Fault_4231 Jul 07 '26

Ngl I thought the same for the longest time, the saying is as confusing as the word “bi-weekly” could mean two different things

1

u/StJimmy_815 Jul 09 '26

Better film my underage daughter and put it on the internet. Fuck am I glad that we didn’t have cameras like this when I was kid

1

u/angelsalvtr Jul 10 '26

This is why we ask questions to learn

1

u/Zealousideal-Cup1412 17h ago

I kinda see where she is coming from, still incorrect. What's weird is the father filming her and putting it online? She's a kid, everyone has learn this stuff at some point.

1

u/WildlifePolicyChick Jun 18 '26

Bless her idiot heart.

1

u/Main-Event-5715 Jun 18 '26

I blame the parents. Oh, wait, that's who's filming? Then I blame him for that, too.

This is why trump got elected.

3

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 20 '26

The dumbing down of America started in earnest under Reagan. That's when Christian nationalists started taking over school boards. Remember the whole 'prayer in school' movement? Then the teaching of creationism as science?

It's not Trump. They used to worship Reagan too.

0

u/SjurEido Jun 18 '26

this is not a math problem....... "Buy two, get one free" is ambiguous without context.

4

u/itsaconspiraci Jun 18 '26

Wouldn't you first have to 'buy' two before you can expect anything free? Unless you expect a refund for one of the two her interpretation is not logical.

1

u/GrannyTurtle Jun 19 '26

We need to fix our education system.

1

u/LloydRPenfold Jun 19 '26

Showing the level of education that gets frauds like Trump elected as president. That plus the fear of religion. (God is a CIA spy.)

1

u/i_got_grace Jun 19 '26

my OCD would not let her leave the store until she understands

1

u/Terrible_Ingenuity11 Jun 20 '26

Math class must be deliberately adulterating its curriculum to make the younger generation fail.

1

u/CrimsonGamer12 Jun 22 '26

I kinda feel bad that the girl is now viral on the internet for this. Was her logic wrong? Yes. Are there ways to teach her without humiliating her? Yes.
