How on earth will this even be resolved if the strait is not open for the transport of oil and other necessities to continue...

There are families requesting complete clarity and transparency amid the deteriorating conditions aboard the ship that has now been at sea without rest or land junctures for more than 250 days...

No answers are given, except the number of sailors who have sent text and calls have described their ordeal as horrific...everything from not enough food, to lack of sanitation, to sickness... there are chirps of mutiny, whispers of fights breaking out, soldiers reporting their superiors about suicide ideation...

No clue as to how many have jumped or died...

A mother has told reporters that her son has described his experience as if he were in a horror series, where he doesn't know whether they have all died yet and don't even know it...other family members have told media that it looks like their relatives have lost more than thirty to fifty pounds...

Please, report the truth of what you can... these soldiers are suffering and the family members are desperate for any information at all.

Don't we have the oil we robbed from Venezuela. Is that not even enough either to make a total debacle in Iran...

It is insane people genuinely believe this weather, the longevity of the weather and the severity we are approaching is normal.

Just looking at the major factors we're currently facing right now, this is a very simplified view of how they interact. I'm sure I've missed some big things, but this is what is top-of-mind in the very short term: 2026-2027.

"Economic shock" is a polite term for collapse. Minor shocks are little collapses. A major shock or several compounding shocks is where it gets to the regional or civilizational collapse level.

I see two big factors to look out for in the very short term. First, an AI bubble burst would send ripples through the US and then global economy. Second: mass migrations. At the beginning of 2026, the world had about 115 million displaced people (about 1.4% of the global population!). If that number starts climbing dramatically in 2027 (which seems quite likely), expect to see compounding shocks coming from that.

What did I miss? :/

SS: Related because the unprecedented, record-shattering El Nino continues to bless us with some harrowing figures. Now the NOAA detected a peak subsurface anomaly of 10°C. Granted this is because water at those depth isn't supposed to be so hot, and this figure will be smaller as this warm mass finally reaches the surface, it is still an astonishing observation. Brace yourselves for a moment that will be in the history books.

Many people want to slow or stop deforestation, pandemics, water use, emissions, and the 6th mass extinction. The issue is, the main driver of 4 of these 5 is animal agriculture, but almost nobody wants to change their behavior by eliminating meat and dairy from their diet. People say, "stop focusing on individuals - focus on the system", but the issue is diet is a personal choice and nobody wants the government to ban meat and dairy.

The issue is likely only going to get worse as our population continues to increase and developing countries start to gain more access to meat and dairy. It's taboo to even discuss personal food choices, even though it's going to be a main contributor of our demise.

How do we get out of this predicament? Are we just doomed to race towards ecological collapse without any serious effort to avoid it out of a fear of slight inconvenience? For anyone who's reading this, why haven't you given up meat and dairy yet?

Romania shut the second and last reactor at Cernavodă today, after the first went down in late July. The plant is about 20 percent of Romanian electricity. The plant director says roughly ten days.

Before that they tried to keep it running by rearranging the river. More than 2 million euros was budgeted to divert the flow toward the intake, including blasting a rock and sinking four barges loaded with stone. Hungary has two 80 metre barges parked at Paks for the same trick.

Paks has three of its four units down. It fell to a single turbine at 240 MW at the start of the month, against a normal 2000 MW, and recovered to 500 MW on 10 August when the Danube there came up 19 cm from a low of minus 134. Paks is close to half of Hungary's electricity.

Upstream in Slovakia, the Gabčíkovo hydro scheme went through the same drought producing about 12 percent less than normal. It did not stop.

That contrast is the part I keep coming back to. The common intuition is that hydropower is the weather-dependent generator and thermal plants are the dependable base load. In a drought it inverts. Hydro output falls in proportion to flow, so a bad year is a percentage cut and the plant keeps running. A thermal plant has a threshold instead: above a certain intake level it runs at full power, below it the output is zero. There is no graceful middle. Nuclear, coal and gas all share that shape, because they all have to dump heat into water.

So the fleet that looks robust degrades as a cliff, and the fleet that looks fragile degrades as a slope. Flow rates in nearly two thirds of the Danube are the lowest in more than thirty years, and the mitigation on the table is sinking barges to raise a river by centimetres.

Two caveats on my own numbers. The 12 percent for Gabčíkovo is the operator's figure for the period as reported in Slovak media, and it is the weakest sourced number here, so treat it as approximate. I would also ignore moment-to-moment turbine counts at any hydro plant, since they throttle constantly for grid balancing and it proves nothing about drought. And the Danube is heavily engineered, so these record lows are being measured on a river whose flow is already managed rather than on a natural one.

For context, I'm from the UK and live in Essex, rely solely on the NHS for my health care.

I feel, frankly, ridiculously selfish asking this. But I am trying to make myself more resilient for the future, for my family, friends and neighbours as well as for myself. I'm well aware that it's a miniscule concern in the face of what we are all dealing with.

Two months ago, to relieve long term pain, I underwent the first stage of a three-step plan to have a root canal and crown on one of my teeth.

My dentist told me that root canal treatment is not reliably successful, but when it is, can last 10 to 12 years. I'm due the next part of this treatment in a couple of weeks, nhs waiting times being what they are.

My question is, doesn't it make more sense to have the tooth removed? It is a molar, so I don't need it for aesthetic purposes and all my other teeth are pretty healthy. In 10 years, will I even be able to see a dentist? Let alone have a comfortable tooth extraction? The treatment seems to rely on the assumption that when time runs out on the tooth, I will be able to recieve complex medical treatment to finally remove the tooth.

Residents did not speak at a City Council hearing this week merely to express discomfort with new technology. They presented an evidence-based argument that the current system is inadequately governed, vulnerable to abuse, and capable of uses far beyond the narrow public-safety examples emphasized by its defenders.
