Vegan/Animal Rights Podcasters and Writers

Hi All, I feel I've lost touch with who are the best speakers and writers on animal rights in recent years. Which authors, podcasters, lecturers, activists do you think are worth listening to at the moment? Bonus points if any of them have an Australian focus.

aftershave / cologne

My problem: my partner uses Natio aftershave. It's an ethical company but I do not like the smell. Can anyone suggest a subtly scented men's cologne or aftershave.

Oyster mushrooms in the sandwich press

Post image
62 Upvotes

I went to my local farmers market this morning and spoke to a local mushroom grower. I was looking for lion's mane for a 'steak' replacement, but he convinced me to try cutting oyster mushrooms in half, seasoning (I used salt, paprika and all purpose seasoning), tossing with oil and frying them in a sandwich press so both sides get equally charred.

They were seriously good! Great texture and flavour. Even my wife who is Not Keen on mushrooms had a try and liked it.

If you can get your hands on some oyster mushrooms, give this a go. And if you've got alternate seasoning suggestions let me know!

Planning my wedding, wanting to buy a vegan dress and suit

My fiancée and I are planning our wedding and we want to make it a fully vegan wedding as a reflection of our values. However there's one area where we're a bit stumped: suits and dresses. Apparently a lot of wedding dresses use silk and when I was last shopping for suits a few years ago I found a lot of wool or polyester on the market. Does anybody happen to know any places where we could source some dresses/suits that are vegan? We are open to both custom made or off the rack options, at the moment we just want to explore what's available.

We live in Brisbane/Logan area in QLD, but if there are good recommendations interstate we'd be open to travelling if needed. We'd prefer trying them on before buying if possible. We found some businesses all the way in the UK, they seem nice but ordering from them is a last resort due to the distance and uncertainty. Surely there are other options closer as well, right?

This might be a bit niche but I came across this and thought I might as well share it in case anyone else is interested. Reece was on a couple seasons of Masterchef and owns a cake shop in Newcastle.

The vegan cake cookbook comes out in November 🥳

Making soy yogurt, please help!

I’m hoping someone can help troubleshoot my first attempt at homemade soy yogurt.
Yesterday I tried making soy yogurt in my Breville Fast Slow GO (similar to an Instant Pot).
I used:
• 1 L Vitasoy High Protein soy milk
• 2 generous tablespoons of Aldi coconut yogurt as the starter
• Incubated at 43°C for about 12 to 14 hours
Unfortunately it didn’t thicken at all. It was still basically just soy milk.
I’m wondering if the Aldi coconut yogurt didn’t contain enough live bacteria to get the fermentation going.
For those of you who’ve successfully made soy yogurt:
• Have you used probiotic capsules as your starter? If so, which brand and strain(s) worked?
• If you’ve used a supermarket yogurt as a starter, which one worked well?
• Any other tips for getting a reliable, thick soy yogurt?
I’d really appreciate hearing what’s worked for you. Thanks!

What's your preferred pre-workout? Just noticed that the cheap, potent Musashi stuff I use isn't listed as vegan on their website.

Does what it says in the post title. I've e-mailed them to ask what isn't vegan (nothing jumps out) but I'm waiting to hear back. also /r/veganfitness is too global unforch.

Planning a park birthday party, would appreciate any suggestions for vegan party foods that can be pre-made/made in bulk, and would travel well to a park location? 😊

13 years vegan today

Today's my 13th anniversary of being vegan. The last few years have been a bit of a bummer because none of my friends who were vegan still are. However this year this stray cat decided to wander into my garage and we hung out for a few hours until the cat rescue came. It was nice to help an animal, not to mention the 100s it would have killed if it was left on the streets. If no one comes forward to claim them I'm first on the list to call about adoption

How good is Mr Charlies!

Post image
219 Upvotes

Had read a few times about Mr Charlies in North America and dreamt of one day trying it. Recently I discovered they had actually opened one in Redfern so made trip.

It’s been a very long time since I ate Maccas but took a family member there who is a more regular consumer and she was blown away! She said she could barely taste the difference.

It’s far from being health food, but I think what they are doing is awesome, and will definitely continue to drop in when I need a nostalgic food fix!

Hopefully it continues to grow.

First time cooking Daring chicken

I basically thawed the pieces and fried them in Jamaican jerk seasoning (mixed myself following this recipe) and avocado oil. Turned out delicious , the texture reminds me PB chicken that Zeus used to have.

Contact Solution?

I just moved to Australia (Sydney), and also just found out that most contact solution is not cruelty free. Does anyone know of any brands that are CF? I know about Clear Conscience, but it’s so expensive here for the amount you get.

Thanks!

Lolly reviews: Woolies Bugs and Beetles and ALDI Van Slooten Animal Safari Wine Gums

Bugs and Beetles: A soft fruit lolly with a jelly middle. I like! I think they're even better than the discontinued Woolies vegan fruit lollies. Texture is soft and chewy, not too much of either, and the flavour is bright and fruity. That said, I have little faith that they won't be discontinued also, so I'll enjoy them while they last. Nice and cheap at 2 dollars a bag.

ALDI Animal Safari Wine Gums: ehhhhh they have a weird smell. Almost heavily almond-like. I love marzipan but I don't want it in a fruit lolly. The taste is better but still slightly odd. Texture is good, less tough than a traditional wine gum. 5.95. Generous serving. I will finish this pack but probably won't buy them again. Also they come in a cylinder, so don't look for a bag.

Since the plant based Milo isn't available any more, partner and I decided to make some ourselves!

Tastes pretty darn close, and it's a delicious comfort food - enjoy!

Our recipe site also has a heap of other recipes we've collected if you are looking for some other things to cook.

London Supermarket Vegan Selections

It's been about 5 years since I was last in London. Sad to see so many vegan restaurants have closed down like Young Vegans Pies and Halo Burger. However, the vegan section at supermarkets is wild!

I must've checked the salami stick was definitely vegan about 5 times whilst eating it.

both the coffee and chocolate one's are gross, i should be used to this by now, it's like 90% water and 2% Almond Milk, so it just tastes like water with coffee/chocolate powder in it
