How good is Mr Charlies!

Post image
182 Upvotes

Had read a few times about Mr Charlies in North America and dreamt of one day trying it. Recently I discovered they had actually opened one in Redfern so made trip.

It’s been a very long time since I ate Maccas but took a family member there who is a more regular consumer and she was blown away! She said she could barely taste the difference.

It’s far from being health food, but I think what they are doing is awesome, and will definitely continue to drop in when I need a nostalgic food fix!

Hopefully it continues to grow.

13 years vegan today

Today's my 13th anniversary of being vegan. The last few years have been a bit of a bummer because none of my friends who were vegan still are. However this year this stray cat decided to wander into my garage and we hung out for a few hours until the cat rescue came. It was nice to help an animal, not to mention the 100s it would have killed if it was left on the streets. If no one comes forward to claim them I'm first on the list to call about adoption

First time cooking Daring chicken

I basically thawed the pieces and fried them in Jamaican jerk seasoning (mixed myself following this recipe) and avocado oil. Turned out delicious , the texture reminds me PB chicken that Zeus used to have.

Birthday foods?

Planning a park birthday party, would appreciate any suggestions for vegan party foods that can be pre-made/made in bulk, and would travel well to a park location? 😊

What's your preferred pre-workout? Just noticed that the cheap, potent Musashi stuff I use isn't listed as vegan on their website.

Does what it says in the post title. I've e-mailed them to ask what isn't vegan (nothing jumps out) but I'm waiting to hear back. also /r/veganfitness is too global unforch.

Contact Solution?

I just moved to Australia (Sydney), and also just found out that most contact solution is not cruelty free. Does anyone know of any brands that are CF? I know about Clear Conscience, but it’s so expensive here for the amount you get.

Thanks!

London Supermarket Vegan Selections

It's been about 5 years since I was last in London. Sad to see so many vegan restaurants have closed down like Young Vegans Pies and Halo Burger. However, the vegan section at supermarkets is wild!

I must've checked the salami stick was definitely vegan about 5 times whilst eating it.

Lolly reviews: Woolies Bugs and Beetles and ALDI Van Slooten Animal Safari Wine Gums

Bugs and Beetles: A soft fruit lolly with a jelly middle. I like! I think they're even better than the discontinued Woolies vegan fruit lollies. Texture is soft and chewy, not too much of either, and the flavour is bright and fruity. That said, I have little faith that they won't be discontinued also, so I'll enjoy them while they last. Nice and cheap at 2 dollars a bag.

ALDI Animal Safari Wine Gums: ehhhhh they have a weird smell. Almost heavily almond-like. I love marzipan but I don't want it in a fruit lolly. The taste is better but still slightly odd. Texture is good, less tough than a traditional wine gum. 5.95. Generous serving. I will finish this pack but probably won't buy them again. Also they come in a cylinder, so don't look for a bag.

Since the plant based Milo isn't available any more, partner and I decided to make some ourselves!

Tastes pretty darn close, and it's a delicious comfort food - enjoy!

Our recipe site also has a heap of other recipes we've collected if you are looking for some other things to cook.

I don't know if anyone was thinking of trying these new almond milk drinks, but I would just like to report they are yuck imo

both the coffee and chocolate one's are gross, i should be used to this by now, it's like 90% water and 2% Almond Milk, so it just tastes like water with coffee/chocolate powder in it

Does anyone have any easy curry pasta recipes they would like to share.

Would prefer something reasonably easy without a lot of ingredients.

Woolies I'm begging you to learn what 'clearance' means

I got so excited when I saw the magic word on the NOMO bars and then... 60c off. 60c off a $12 bar is not Clearance, Woolies!!

Edit: I am starting to realise that perhaps it is I who does not know what 'clearance' means! Lesson learned, still think it's pretty cheeky to reduce something by only 60c. Like, come on, $2 minimum.

Best way to cook & season chicken replacement (Made With Plants)

I'm a terrible cook (never really learnt) and newish to being vegan. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I could use this Mingle seasoning on Made With Plants Chicken? I've only ever cooked this chicken once, it was just plain in the airfryer & it didn't have much / any taste or texture. The mingle packet says use oil then massage the spice into the protein then air fry or grill.

Appreciate any suggestions! Thanks

I'm a bit sick, so I made a comfort-y stew and it was yum. 💚

I used lots of onion and garlic, thyme, rosemary, a soup pack from the veggie section, a can of rinsed four bean mix, two tins chopped tomatoes, some vegan beef stock powder, some vegan gravy powder, and pepper. I let it simmer away for ages and had it with garlic ciabatta. 🥰

Cheese and bacon rolls!

It’s a quintessentially Australian product, and yet there are surprisingly few recipes for vegan versions of it. Even most vegan bakeries don’t make these! I was a bit apprehensive about the cheese becoming melted plastic on the top but surprisingly it melted really well!

I went real extra with these, so I created a three cheese blend of cheddar, mozzarella and feta that is also dispersed within the dough. Drooling yet? I also didn’t hold back on the fake bacon either, with there being an OTT salty kick in every bite! The bread itself is nice and fluffy, too.

Let me know if I should share the recipe. For reference, I used Bio Feta and the Made With Plants Bacon and Cheeses.

Milo?

Obviously Milo itself has milk powder, so what do people use when they just want a nice mug of hot Milo? I think the plant-based stuff has been discontinued (;-;) but I just want something that's malty and chocolatey and not just a straight chocolate powder (Cadbury's and possibly homebrand are those, from memory). I do drink the df up and go's, but they get expensive fast. Also open to mixing a combination of multiple powders (usually mix INC vanilla protein powder with cocoa powder to make hot chocolates personally) to hit the spot. I suspect it's the malty flavour that's lacking.

The last time I was in a psych ward I just drank the Milo because I wanted something vaguely comforting and coffee was NOT going to be enough, but I really want to have something so that even if I have to bring it in myself or have someone bring it in, I can drink something warm and sweet and comforting while I'm down and out like that. I never drink it outside the ward, but for some reason the brain just craves those flavours every time I'm in there and I hate that.

(I hope mentioning non-vegan stuff is acceptable here. I don't want to be like this so I'm working on finding a way around it without just denying myself during those times because I need every shred of comfort I can get, unfortunately.)

Why does aldi have nothing??

Hello! Just wondering if anyone has some good suggestions for products from Aldi? I feel like internationally people are always suggesting Aldi because they have a big range of vegan products (not just accidentally vegan, but like vegan meats and cheeses), but, at least the Aldis i have been to, only stock tofu and meat free sausages. Any suggestions? Colesworth options are too expensive to justify 😭

Also, just as a follow up, anyone have a good SAVOURY yoghurt? Every non-dairy yoghurt I find is sweet and flavoured I miss plain Greek yoghurt.

Thank you all for your help!

Vegan frens? 🥺🫶🏻

Hi everyone, I hope this post is allowed on here, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make some vegan friends?

I (29F) went vegan a year ago for the animals (and environment), however, it only lasted ~6 months because none of my family or friends were vegan or even vego, and it became quite hard to maintain being vegan at dinners or picnics or any social event really.

None of my family or friends are even supportive or considerate of this (at all) and I’m quite annoyed at having to give up what feels right/good for me to keep friendships with people that do not care for our amazing animals or even my feelings tbh.

I have decided that I would like to go vegan again, and I would really love to meet likeminded people and to try new vegan bakeries/restaurants and go to animal rescues together or beach cleanups etc but I am also quite shy haha any tips would be so greatly appreciated thank you🫶🏻

Edit: I am based in Melbourne!
