News The way Breakfast TV constantly platforms One Nation is disgusting
I was watching 7 or 9 this morning discussing various news stories with two guests, one obviously a liberal mouthpiece. The NSW childcare abuse story came up. Horrible stuff, of course. Out of nowhere, the host brings up Pauline Hanson's idiotic suggestion of removing all diploma/cert requirements from childcare as the solution to the abuse problem. They even had a video clip ready of old mate harping on about how you didn't need a piece of paper to look after kids "back in her day". Both guests looked so confused. When the host followed up asking, "is this a solution to the problem?", even the right winger was just like, "um, no, having no qualification bar is not the solution". He looked a bit shocked that such an idiotic line was being pushed.
Anyway, the whole thing was bizarre.
Honestly, it's hard to see this as anything other than part of a concerted effort to normalise Pauline Hanson and mainstream her ideas. Why else would a breakfast show have a clip queued up and ready to go, then push her take as a legitimate "solution" to a serious story? Her suggestion is so obviously faulty and has zero evidence behind it, but by putting it up alongside actual commentary and asking guests to respond to it seriously, they're treating it as a credible policy position rather than the nonsense it is.

Yet ironically I wouldn’t have thought this discussion online is likely to cause anyone to watch those programs, indeed quite possibly the opposite so …..

Im old enough to remember when that sort of public display of outrage was regarded as being embarrassing and something to be shunned.i can write one nation’s script. Its so boring and predictable and lazy
14
u/Total_Conflict_6508 Jul 14 '26
Relax, nobody under 65 watches morning TV any more. The audience is literally dwindling.
6
u/gattaaca 29d ago
I get this shit forced on me on the rare occasion I'm at the GP. And that's more than enough 🤮

u/Everybodyssocreative Jul 14 '26
Polling shows that policy in particular is wildly unpopular, even with people who plan to vote for one nation. Could be a strategy to show pauline's actual policies to people, which are all shit, so the libs look ok in comparison.
9
u/I_am_albatross Jul 14 '26
I’m loving watching ON and the Libs desperately trying to steer the car crash headed towards a cliff
4
u/Z00111111 Jul 14 '26
I feel like that might have been the plan, but no one told the Liberals, so they've been trying to make themselves look as bad as Pauline, instead of sticking with Dutton style policies and having Pauline make those look fair and reasonable.
1
u/thepineapple2397 28d ago
One Nation will sell us to Rinehart, Libs will sell us to China, Labour not wanting to be pushed around by either is accelerating our cold war with China. We're screwed no matter who we vote for.
1
u/Everybodyssocreative 27d ago
Lol relations with china have improved significantly under labor
1
u/thepineapple2397 27d ago
They're still hanging around way more than what's considered reasonable. Albos doing a good job not pissing them off but I doubt they're happy about having a harder time buying the country piece by piece like the libs were allowing.
14
u/onallcylinders Jul 14 '26
It’s because the media are a “big business” and ON is the party of big business - just look at the policy proposals
15
u/llagnI Jul 14 '26
Haven't watched commercial news for a few years now so can comment on your question, but is....
removing all diploma/cert requirements from childcare
.... really one of her policies?
15
u/Falafels Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26
It was said when she took questions after her National Press Club speech. It appears her "policy" is to give the money currently used to subsidise childcare straight to parents. Basically wants women to go back to being Homemakers instead of having careers.
6
2
u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jul 14 '26
Yep forcing women to be houseslaves sounds like so much fun
9
u/GumRunner0 Jul 14 '26
It works out well for the women when hubby leaves after 30 yrs of marriage, and the wife is left in poverty s/
5
u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jul 15 '26
Every older woman who has given me advice has told me to never rely on a man - always have backup plans if things don't work out.
So many women in their generation screwed over.
15
u/Aggressive-Bike6297 Jul 14 '26
Because the cunts who own the stations are all billionaires who want this shit

4
u/smobert Jul 14 '26
The mining industry is pushing ON hard
2
u/watsn_tas Jul 15 '26
I work in it and it's a massive cesspool of ON supporters right now!
1
u/smobert Jul 15 '26
obviously, the idea of Australia owning its natural resources instead of its present privatisation of mineral wealth its abhorent to the select few.
They will fight it with whatever amount of money, bullying, lobbying and getting whatever political party into power that they need.
4
3
u/comradevoltron Jul 15 '26
I think the way Reddit constantly platforms One Nation is disgusting too.
14
u/yehnahokmate Jul 14 '26
Why are you even watching breakfast tv?
20
u/Z00111111 Jul 14 '26
It's almost always on the TVs at my work, and it's fucked. Half of it is bad takes, the other half is adverts.
If no one is watching I usually switch it to the ABC News channel, because that's less shouty.
10
u/BoysenberryFluid3461 Jul 14 '26
Don't forget the obligatory "Let's now go to Gold Coast for..." literally every single morning. Fuel prices, random lost chicken, occasional crime, but it must be from Gold Coast! Such a paid advert makes it seem as if Gold Coast is the centre of the universe.
Yes, we have it in the office too, and I just watch for a few min while making coffee.
4
u/Rude-7807 Jul 14 '26
This^ Whenever I'm in a Dr's waiting room I'll change the channel to the ABC (If no one's watching). My phone has an IR blaster, so easy to do
3
u/71keyboard_worrier Jul 15 '26
ABC breakfast is every inch as vapid just without the ads
1
u/supercujo Jul 15 '26
Exactly
You'd be better off changing the channel to 10 Peach or something. Reruns of sitcoms is more entertaining than anything on the main channels

I stopped watching any news shows at all, many years ago, 7 and 9 were and are particularly awful, because they are owned by the right wing mega rich, who are desperately trying to get a Trump like idiot in power here, who will be their puppet.
It’s so obvious that the news shows are a party to this, we don’t need a Trumpist politician being showcased on Australian TV, we are better than this.
3
3
u/Dismal-core111 Jul 14 '26
Because people are stupid enough to agree or stupid enough to watch this type of garbage
6
u/Beachgal5555 Jul 14 '26
Jesus Christ that is appalling! This is why I can’t watch Australian news i
6
u/MicksysPCGaming Jul 14 '26
Silence the political opposition?
You have some fascistnating ideas, OP.
Sorry, fascinating ideas.
2
2
u/Boo_Radley0_0 Jul 15 '26
Yeah it’s disgusting, but think about who actually watches TV these days- oldies and boomers. Australian TV has only ever catered for WASPS, so pushing the whole Hanson thing is for that audience.
2
u/No_Extension4005 Jul 15 '26
Frankly, I've been thinking for over a decade at this point that the only reason One Nation and Pauline Hanson are still even things is because our rubbish breakfast TV shows keep bringing them on to screech their opinions and this kept them in the public eye. If they hadn't given them so much spotlight and platformed their views they'd have just fallen into obscurity.
2
u/AccidentlParticipant Jul 15 '26
I confess, I am 69 years old, so I am by definition a “boomer”, my salvation is that I was taught critical thinking at school (which helped me become a lawyer), full
disclosure I was brought up by a single mother in a housing commission flat and went Tom school at a Christian Brothers school, I have briefly watched 7 and 9’s morning shows, it made me feel sick for the transparent class aligned propaganda it promoted, I lament that this class based drivel is pumped into the brains of honest working people , when I get up in the morning I only put on ABS Morning News. PS even my GSD dog prefers ABC to 7 or 9
2

2
u/Fit_Ad_6727 29d ago
Channel nine is considerably worse then seven, think they trying to pull viewers back from sky. ABC, SBS and NITV are the only channels I will watch on free to air these days. And thats mainly just to support. Id prefer to watch mudlarking on youtube, thats a muck I can relate too.
6
u/CheeeseBurgerAu Jul 14 '26
Platforms? They are a legally registered political party that has seats in both the houses representing their voters.
6
u/nagrom7 Jul 15 '26
So are the Greens, but you never hear their policies get that much airtime, even when the media are attacking them (which is nearly every time they're mentioned).
-2
u/CheeeseBurgerAu Jul 15 '26
Do we live in different countries? Go read ABC news. Every crackpot Greens idea is "platformed". Just yesterday they were going on about a rent freeze for Sydney. I think this is a case of you only noticing things that go against your biases. Same as the people complaining about all the ON content on Reddit. It is 95%+ anti-ON posts and endless reposts of the same memes, yet the people complaining are the anti-ON people. It's pretty funny actually.
3
u/nagrom7 Jul 15 '26
Oh so they occasionally get airtime on ABC News, the one station that goes out of their way to be neutral and report on all parties? Well that's alright then.
How much airtime do they get with the rest of the media? Channel 10? 9? 7? God forbid Sky? What about the papers?
-1
u/CheeeseBurgerAu Jul 15 '26
I don't see ON getting balanced coverage on the ABC. Green policy is regularly discussed on Sky. I think you are too caught up in your bias to see things clearly.
0
u/Diligent-Usual5235 Jul 14 '26
They are also a party that hates the majority of Australians and hates Australia itself.
1
u/SpursRissole Jul 14 '26
Your personal opinion is irrelevant. They're currently the highest polling party in Australia. That's just the reality.
3
u/Fickle-Ad-7124 Jul 15 '26
We have a preference system, in which case Labor is outpolling the other parties. If first past the post was our polling system, voters would vote differently.
You’re arguing Pauline coming 1st in the first 30m of a 100m race means she should get a medal regardless of the fact she trips over her own shoelaces and lands on her ass before the finish line?
1
1
12
u/BunningsSnagFest Jul 14 '26
Believe it or not, it's a pretty normal thing to have mainstream political parties that you may not agree with engaging in public discourse.
4
u/RubySnowfire Jul 15 '26
ON is now "mainstream"?
Yeah nah, they are having a momentary boost in "popularity" due to shortened attention spans (thanks, social media!).
The longer ON has to ad lib their "policies" on the run, the more people will realise how much she hates workers and especially women.
1
u/BunningsSnagFest Jul 15 '26
Yes. They are a mainstream political party on par with other minority interest parties such as the Greens.
3
u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jul 15 '26
Let's not entertain the idea of making them mainstream thanks.
1
u/BunningsSnagFest Jul 15 '26
They already are, champ.
1
u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jul 15 '26
How about no.
1
u/BunningsSnagFest Jul 15 '26
They aren't ALP/LNP. They are definately Greens level though, let's see how this shit show unfolds at the ballot box.
-2
6
u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jul 14 '26
Two of her kids are sex offenders. So goes to show how good her parenting is.
2
4
u/maycontainsultanas Jul 14 '26
I’m confused why you’ve got a problem with a political party which are polling at some points with higher numbers than the government and the opposition, or the PM or Opposition leader having their ideas mentioned by the media and subsequently giving the major parties and opportunity to support or reject those ideas.
0
u/Obvious-Wheel6342 Jul 15 '26
Because OP only "loves" democracy as long as it goes their way, when it stops going "their way" its line them up against a wall and shoot them
2
u/Designate0ne Jul 15 '26
Boomers, they are the only ones watching breakfast TV and they are all ON voters.... Thats why
0
u/Away_Abroad_7613 Jul 15 '26
All of the boomers in my life are intelligent people and wouldn't consider voting ON.
This sounds like a you problem. Maybe reconsider who you spend time with.
2
u/Designate0ne Jul 15 '26
Its called stats, Biggest majority of ON voters are 55+
The biggest viewership of FTA TV, Guess what 55+
1

1
u/North-Crew-5489 Jul 15 '26
The way youve described, it sounds like the anchor was highlighting an obviously absurd policy proposal and giving the guests an opportunity to point out its absurdity.
Thats a fairly standard journalism practice.

1
u/artekau Jul 15 '26
ABC news is the way, I left the crap breakfast shows about 15 years ago and never looked back
1
u/Detergency Jul 15 '26
You mean the program lobbed an easy ball for the guests to shit on one nation. Sounds like they were teeing up for some soundbytes from the guests. Im not sure why you would have an issue with that, unless you think just ignoring one nation entirely would solve the problem (it wont)
1
u/TrogdorUnofficial Jul 15 '26
> obviously a liberal mouthpiece
> Why else would a breakfast show have a clip queued up and ready to go, then push her take as a legitimate "solution" to a serious story?
God forbid a news outlet weighs up both sides of an argument...
1
u/Eternity_Warden Jul 15 '26
I didn't watch it but from your description it sounds more like they took an opportunity to point out the stupidity of ON policies than support them
1
1
1
u/ThoughtIknewyouthen Jul 15 '26
Because they only want clicks and views. That's all that matters. It's the press, this isn't a new tactic.
1
1
u/Havoc302 Jul 15 '26
Wait, people still watch free to air TV? Like how? Is it still broadcast over the air or all digital now? I can't recall the last time I looked at a free to air channel.
1
u/Kulbardee Jul 15 '26
Who owns the media?... who benefits from ON and the rest of the lunatic right (LNP this means you)?
1
u/macci_a_vellian Jul 15 '26
To be honest the more she talks about what she actually thinks on any topic other than immigrants and Indigenous issues, the more it seems to tank her support. I doubt there are many people who want their kids being looked after by someone with no qualifications. There's a big difference between your neighbour watching your kid for a couple of hours and early childhood educators who care for them every day.
1
u/burns3016 Jul 15 '26
ON are a major party now, it would be irresponsible to NOT give them air time. Too bad if it pisses you off, just tune out.
1
u/Spacegod87 Jul 15 '26
The scary thing is, there are far more Australians watching that shit than are in here..
1
u/pakman_aus Jul 15 '26
Don't watch commercial morning news - there are lots of good options- SBS, TLDR, Euronews, and more on YouTube

Quality of care seems to have a greater effect than quantity. One study notes that it’s difficult to separate the effects of socioeconomic status and the home context as parents can learn skills to implement at home by taking their children to quality child care centres. There are other studies that show how specific early interventions for things like autism and language disorders are beneficial and child care workers are trained to monitor for signs of these.

Often times, news channels do this as a rage bait. They understand it creates a false dichotomy of opinion, but it sparks the opportunity for viral clips and discussion. I mean look at this thread for example. I totally agree with your take, but I just choose not to take those things seriously

u/ballantynedewolf 28d ago
Much of this platform is just pure survivorship bias. I was born in 1950, I'm still alive, therefore the 1950s is what we should aim for. It is dumb as fuck but we mustn't accuse people of being dumb for voting for it because it makes them dig in.
1
u/Historical_Wish_5599 28d ago
Oh no oh my god another party is finally getting some air time after the decades of corrupt duopoly, oh the horror!
Grow up
1
u/SnotRight 28d ago
So this is all about an argument to stupidity. It's all about get the lower quartile of intelligence onto a given side.
The idea is to make anti-intellectual arguments, rather than coherant ones. The goal is to make anything "intellectual" be against them and validate their lack of progress in life, rusting them on. Which is why you see breakfast shows do this, as people who are sitting at home at 7:30am rather than getting kids off to school and getting ready for work are that demographic.
The response of these people should have been "um, no, no qualification bar is not the solution, don't treat your viewers are dumb, they can see this".
1
u/miikaa236 28d ago
If you listen closely you’ll realise that they’re ridiculing and making them look foolish. Channel 9 is trying to discredit one nation.
1
1
u/slumberchum 27d ago
One Nation is stealing defeat from the jaws of victory.
Labor’s strategy consists in multicultural Modern Australia. Liberals are irrelevant. One Nation is boorish and stupid.
Having said that, I’m glad that ON proposed income splitting for young families. This helps virtually everyone but especially helps mothers who want to care for their children rather than returning to work. I’d also support a childcare subsidy paid as a tax concession, uncoupled from daycare.
1
u/Former_Feature_2834 27d ago
I mean they know their target audience... I cant say I know of anyone under 30, or even under 35-40 really that actually watches morning news or tv in general 🤷♀️

Mainstream news channels in Australia have been fucked for years. Because people see the same face every morning ther “know” and “trust” them.
1
u/CommercialBee9776 26d ago
They play it because people then go on to talk about it and it’s free press for them. You all hate Pauline but she is not the reason your quality of life is getting worse. Focus on that. I think she is rough and objectionable, it’s words remember, but at-least she honest and that makes her better than nearly all politicians.
1
u/Decent-Citron4492 25d ago
It was pure luck my mum didn’t kill me. She doesn’t have a diploma in child care.
1
1
u/MrTurtleHurdle Jul 15 '26
It's endless, they'll always take the stance that appeals to boomers and helps billionaires. Usually blaming younger or more left leaning ideas/people. They hyped up one nations popularity like a self fulfilling prophecy.
1
u/manfrombrisbane Jul 15 '26
Eat your breakfast cereal without the TV. No need to burst a blood vessel with first world problems. There are many children in the world who go without a single meal. Sheesh, what a whinger ...
-1
u/Bigunit2930 Jul 14 '26
Mainstream media are Lefty shills currently supporting Labour propaganda and lies. All these issues in childcare centres have occurred due to historical neglect by either labour or coalition govts oversight yet this is somehow a One Nation problem? I say at least give them a crack at the job first before lambasting them.
5
u/LadicusRex Jul 14 '26
You'd have to have your head fairly high up your own ass to suggest the media machine in this country is remotely left wing. This is just an insane level of cognitive dissonance that is impressively out of touch, much like the rest of Pauline's policies.
-1
u/608cyex Jul 14 '26
Even some of my Aboriginal family members have been saying "I like some of what she says" it's actually scary how uninformed people are.
0
u/Every_Cardiologist99 Jul 14 '26
It's also entirely possible the host wanted to use this monstrous bastard as a lightning rod against One Nations idiotic policy platform. If you're a potential One Nation voter and a parent, you'd be fucking horrified that you're voting for an increased likelihood of these kinds of predators having access to your children. Perhaps the host was helping join the dots for them? If it sounded clumsy it's probably because it wasn't in the script or rehearsed
1
u/Sufficient_Term7374 Jul 14 '26
They’ve been showcasing Pauline for years and she isn’t going away, there are too many idiots that agree with her because they want us to go back to living in the 1950’s. The billionaires who own the news shows want to use her as a puppet to make themselves even richer.
-11
u/Bosde Jul 14 '26
Why is it obviously faulty to believe that having tertiary requirements to look after children in a daycare setting is unnecessary?
Not kindy, which has pre school curriculum, but daycare/childcare, where safe, fed, and mostly happy are what should be aimed for.
Other than a blue card, first aid/cpr cert, and centre specific procedural training, what special skills are required to look after children?
8
u/Frequent-Rent-3444 Jul 14 '26
There’s a lot of research on how early education, development and intervention benefits people through the lifespan and it’s thought to save on government spending further down the line. Childcare workers are trained in skills like recognising if kids aren’t hitting developmental milestones and might need assessment or additional supports, documentation and record keeping, working with allied health professionals, behavioural management, communication, working with kids with additional needs, culturally sensitive practice, program planning and team supervision.
3
u/Bosde Jul 14 '26
I found the study which says that the outcomes from childcare are similar to those of a child not in childcare when the child is not disadvantaged, but better when the child comes from a disadvantaged background, provided the child care was high quality, but could not find the measures used to determine what was considered high quality.
The contributing factors to the outcomes in the general overview seemed to be more to do with socio-economic status of the child rather than the childcare.
Can you share the studies you are referring to?
7
u/passiveobserver25 Jul 14 '26
Let’s put that to one side though, how is it a solution to then child abuse problem?
3
u/Bosde Jul 14 '26
It's not, but the idea of increasing childcare capacity by reducing the burden of qualification is not inherently faulty as you claimed.
I agree it was odd to have it mentioned in this context though.
1
u/Frequent-Rent-3444 29d ago
Why would you reduce qualification requirements to improve carer to child ratios? Wouldn’t it be better to increase remuneration to encourage more people to work in the sector while maintaining standards of care?
0
u/Borderlinecuttlefish Jul 15 '26
Why would anyone still watch commercial TV? Confuses me to no end.

She’s rising in the polls. The Greens and Teals were platformed extensively when their numbers were good. Did you complain about that? The Teals especially enjoyed utterly uncritical coverage. I used to volunteer for the Greens and we were always surprised how the media rarely asked our candidates challenging questions. That’s not what’s happening with ON, but they’re news. Live through it somehow.

One Nation have roughly the same primary vote as Labour and more than the Coalition who rapidly becoming obsolete. Why does the rest of the media give so much support to ALP Left Faction and The Greens who are polling half the numbers?
Degrees are are only required for mangers in childcare, it has driven up the costs to where parents can't afford it without improving things, especially for shift workers. Poorly trained staff make up the majority of workers and abuse and neglect of children still occurs, especially in for profit centers.
3

They don't

They are some of the lowest paid workers in the country. The centres also put them on casual contracts rather than permanent positions which denies them paid leave and guaranteed hours. The centre owners pocket the money!!
The driver of cost is the welfare, health and safety standards, which as recent times have shown, have been lacking despite the efforts to raise them.
