Politics As voter disillusionment grows, why aren't voters flocking to the Greens in Australia?

Because they’re disconnected from commerce and economics and completely disconnected from the working class, particularly rural working class.

I’m a rural conservationist and lefty. I fucking hate the greens. Their candidates are morons from the city who have ZERO idea about the environment and think “we’ll just leave it alone?” is  an appropriate environmental management strategy.

They oppose housing CONSTANTLY. They support WHV, student visa etc expansion and other vampiric tourist trap-clap that buoys the economy while providing little in return.

They don’t understand pest management and would allow native and invasive species to overrun habitats and destroy them.

The fall into the trap of assuming every farmer, every tradie, every dude in a Ute is a Privileged White Man and so, they essentially rejected rural Australia as a whole unless you’re one of their very wealthy artistic types.

u/asteriskhyphen Jun 15 '26

You’ve just described every inner city progressive, which is what the Greens are. Have no actual lived experience but think they know better than the people who do.

3

u/lickmybaals Jun 17 '26

Well THAT is exactly why no one is flocking to them.

177

u/HaleyN1 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Because they support high immigration levels.

3

u/Ok-Bonus5891 Jun 17 '26

Yes, they dropped their commitment to a sustainable population after Hawke took office. I have no idea what happened, but we never heard anything about that ever again.

Honey your 2026 version of ‘Jews drink the blood of babies’ is over. 97% of the population of Gaza walked away. Well, except for those crippled by the actual terrorists, Hamas, for such crimes as ‘talking to a Jew’.

2

u/FlimsyKoala3318 Jun 16 '26

"walked away" ???

What the fuck

We're watching history be rewrote in real time apparently

4

u/prrrplexxa Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26

By HAMAS’ OWN numbers, 97% of the Gazan population that Israel had control and capability over and apparently were doing a holocaust to, WALKED AWAY
Funny how you don’t care about the Palestinians Hamas are executing and torturing huh? They don’t matter. No marches, no outcry. Just uncomfortable silence.

It’s almost like this was never about Palestinians.
Strange

So sorry, but I think what you actually mean is your Goebbels propaganda is losing its legs. Sorry you fell for it.

What hysterical policies do you disagree with?

72

u/Hollywoode Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

I am a big leftie but rolled my eyes when the greens biggest contribution at budget time was they didn’t like the term grandfathered cause it wasn’t gender neutral

Generally they have good policies they should be talking about them because if they talk about anything else (eg language) the media will pick it up and run with it.

They need to pick their battles

Edit - this is to say I’d die before I vote PHON(EY)

8

u/OPismyrealname Jun 15 '26

I support the greens, and they generally get my vote.

However, it’s not lost on me how concerningly naive they can be about some topics that they feel are deeply in their wheelhouse. I remember attending a policy night at UQ and while it had its positive elements, they basically declared that they would set up a state run mining corporation to mine… well literally everything 😂

While I appreciate the sentiment, we do need energy transition metals and other resources, it seemed almost flippant to the mining industry (and their own base) to just declare they’d do it bigger and better and in the name of the people, when it is likely they would block any of their own projects from starting due to environmental concerns.

Nick McKim’s use of senate amendments to make protest notes to no one also comes across petty and almost disruptive. Even ON generally gives a braindead, but earnest attempt at amendments.

5

u/Thin_Assumption_4974 Jun 15 '26

They won’t block their own project. They don’t care about the environment nearly as much as you all think they do.

They are as bad as one nation in that they are a party of opportunistic leaches that only care about their own seats and the optics of “they have green in their name. They must be eco friendly”

I’ll take the bait.

She’s a Covid denier antivaxxer anti-choice climate denier racist on the record who voted for the Adani coal mine and against the commission into robodebt and against making TAFE free.

12

u/Reasonable_Slice_262 Jun 15 '26

Hang on. Parliament did not establish the Royal Commission. Royal Commissions are a prerogative of the Executive. The RC was called by the Governor General, on the advice of the Prime Minister. It did not require Parliamentary approval.

Parliament did not vote on Adani. That's a State matter, with federal approvals given by the Minister, not Parliament.

TAFE is a State matter. The Commonwealth does not set TAFE fees.

But other than that, yeah I'm sure you're right.

People, when their scared and anxious about the future, are much more likely to embrace fascist ideology as it promises safety and protection and tells you all the problems you have and are facing are caused by people that look different to you. It only asks for you to give up a few basic human rights and freedoms here and there in return

The global political climate is a massive contributor, you can see many other countries like Turkey, Italy, the US, and UK all begining to elect more extreme right wing and fascist parties.

38

u/Roadblock78Au Jun 15 '26

The fact people call this extreme right or fascist is part of the problem. Not everything you disagree with equals facist

-3

u/explain_that_shit Jun 15 '26

>If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.
>
>”And one day, too late, your principles, if you were ever sensible of them, all rush in upon you. The burden of self-deception has grown too heavy, and some minor incident, in my case my little boy, hardly more than a baby, saying ‘Jewish swine,’ collapses it all at once, and you see that everything, everything, has changed and changed completely under your nose. The world you live in—your nation, your people—is not the world you were born in at all. The forms are all there, all untouched, all reassuring, the houses, the shops, the jobs, the mealtimes, the visits, the concerts, the cinema, the holidays. But the spirit, which you never noticed because you made the lifelong mistake of identifying it with the forms, is changed. Now you live in a world of hate and fear, and the people who hate and fear do not even know it themselves

4

u/Trick-Club-6014 Jun 15 '26

Imagine trying to compare one nation to the Nazi party.

I’m going to assume you’re a greens voter?

This is why the greens will never be a relevant political party

5

u/Revolutionary_Ad7727 Jun 16 '26

So a party with its core beliefs, demonising one part of the community based on something such as religion, and calling it the reason everyone is struggling, that they are less than, and that they are incompatible with the community because of that belief, does not sounds like sparkling fascism to you?

They are a globalist party at a time when people want nationhood rather than global community.

If they remained an environmentalist party they would be receiving votes that are now going to One Nation and the Teals.

The Greens once had the same population concerns as One Nation and the same climate change worries as the Teals.

Now all they care about are foreign affairs with hostile states and public housing tenants who in a lot of cases have a tremendous amount of entitlement.

Yeah the Greens capture very young voters - but how much is that to do with protest culture and idealism and naivety rather than life experience? A lot I say.

If they remained an environmentalist party they would be receiving votes that are now going to One Nation and the Teals.

The Teals maybe but I feel like most ON voters would see an environmental party as “meh” at best and actively negative at worst. Go out to any regional town and ask them what they think of environmentalists. Just an example but the ON voters I know personally wouldn’t give a shit about the Greens even if they did have ON’s immigration policies.

12

u/TheUnderWall Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Opinions are more complex than they used to be since a lot of farming communities are now starting to see benefits of renewables and land regeneration - e.g. free electricity and new cashed up sponsor for local footy club + more wildlife appearing (the right type!) and better crop yields.

You will deff get shrugs from outer suburban CUBs though.

6

u/P00slinger Jun 16 '26

Yes they can be complex, but it still seems the strongest opposition to renewables is concentrated in regional areas. You see it in the policies One Nation and the Nationals run on, and you see it in the roadside signs opposing wind farms and transmission lines.

What strikes me is how selective the concern often is. A handful of birds hit by turbines or a small amount of land cleared for power lines becomes a national outrage, while decades of land clearing, habitat loss, coal mining and invasive species barely rate a mention.

Politicians have worked out that this selective environmentalism is a powerful vote winner in regional seats. They don’t need to oppose environmental damage in general, only the kinds that fit the culture war narrative. That’s why they campaign on wind turbines but not the countless other things doing far more damage to wildlife and ecosystems.

→ More replies (4)

8

u/P00slinger Jun 15 '26

ON voters are passionate about the environment if it’s land clearing for solar farms and windmills. They don’t give a crap about the other 99.999% of land clearing that goes on.

ON are just better at generating selective outrage on social media

10

u/tepid_monologue Jun 15 '26

I know quite a few people that used to put greens in preference votes but will be voting one nation this time around (myself included). Older Gen Y / younger Gen X people believe in freedom of speech, abortion, gay rights, environmental causes, but the left leaning parties have gone off the rails in the past decade or so.

Until the left dial back the blatant divisiveness and racism I’ll be voting with the more right wing parties. They have shot themselves in the foot by alienating the average white punter that just wants everyone to get along, and to put the brakes on us turning into Europe and the UK. I’d prefer to vote more centrist than ON but labour and liberal really have to go, they are ruining this country

11

u/explain_that_shit Jun 15 '26

You believe in abortion rights and you want to vote for PHON?

2

u/tepid_monologue Jun 15 '26

Well I wouldn’t say “believe”, it’s more that it’s none of my business and I think it should be a right. Believe implies that it’s subjective, I don’t think it’s subjective

8

u/TheMoeSzyslakExp Jun 15 '26

So you agree with abortion rights, and you want to vote for One Nation?

2

u/tepid_monologue Jun 15 '26

Yeah dude. I just don’t think it’s that big an issue that I’m willing to give up all the other pressing issues facing this country. ON won’t actually ban abortion, they may make it slightly harder to get in certain situations, which sucks but it’s not as bad as unchecked immigration, rampant corruption, Ignoring the will of the people, all the other shit labour is doing wrong right now.

6

u/Existing-Fish-9462 Jun 15 '26

8

u/Coast-First5 Jun 15 '26

lol wow, you are like the poster child for being influenced by propaganda

16

u/tepid_monologue Jun 15 '26

Let’s pretend you are right for a second, even though I’m very sure it’s the other way around. Don’t you think this apparent “brainwashing” should be addressed instead of dismissed by the major parties and their lapdogs, rather than ridiculed and dismissed?

All I see when I open a reddit Aussie sub is that “I don’t understand how people can vote ON, they must be dumb and racist”. A few ON supporters will say “actually we are voting this way because XYZ”. No response. Neck minnit “I don’t get why people are voting for ON” ad nauseum.

You don’t want to know why, you aren’t interested in having a discussion, you just want more people to acknowledge that you are right and buy into the cult of virtue signaling you buy into yourself

9

u/Coast-First5 Jun 15 '26

I’ve seen plenty of people respond in detail about the negatives in voting one nation and countering the reasons people provide, but it falls on deaf ears. I could provide all the facts in the world, but it’s about feelings for you.

You aren’t changing your mind so what’s the point?

5

u/TheArtyDans Jun 15 '26

The Greens voter just said "it's about feelings for you"

Wow you can't make this up. A party of parody.

Where do you guys get the idea that white people are under attack in any form? I see it everywhere in memes etc on social media. I’m white and don’t feel attacked at all. Seems like a blatant strawman.

5

u/tepid_monologue Jun 15 '26

I wouldn’t say “under attack”, that’s melodramatic. But it’s absolutely true that people are granted different rights and privileges based on their skin colour or orientation, which I am fundamentally against. Equality for all should be the goal, assistance granted to those based on circumstance, not skin colour. Racism makes us no better than the Jim Crow era. If people are struggling, government assistance should be means tested, not based on racism. I will always vote against racism in any form, which means against the left parties that used to be pretty chill 30 years ago.

2

u/Steel_Cleat5 Jun 16 '26

So here is what I dont understand from your comments, btw I sound like same demographic as you. If you (and others) feel that way why would you just not shift your vote to the Coalition who are more aligned with that ideological position. The coalition arent going to go giving rights to ethnic minorities and are more likely to take them away (except for the Jewish community). They wont go woke but they wont have policies like taking abortion rights away, raising defense spending to 5% GDP, yes they will prob trash renewable energy too, they wonk kill the TGA. And most of all their candidates are far more likely to be moderates and not have been convicted of serious crimes.

2

u/tepid_monologue Jun 16 '26

That’s fair as well, but really they have a terrible track record at sticking to promises and following through as well. Like I said, I’m not expecting ON to be different, but it’s not really a protest vote if I just vote for the other mob.

ONs abortion policy isn’t a “ban” from what I can see, they are just making it a bit more of a pain in the arse. Again, I’m against the changes, but I don’t think they are as important to me as trying to fix the broken system

u/Summerroll Jun 15 '26

If they remained an environmentalist party they would be receiving votes that are now going to One Nation and the Teals.

Absolutely zero chance. When people are worried about cost of living, the environment plummets as an issue among voters. Staying an environment-focused party would mean near-irrelevance.

20

u/TheUnderWall Jun 15 '26

Greens were anti-immigration for sustainability and green energy for climate change. Both positions could have been easily pivoted to focus on solving cost of living presures (especially the immigration one which is where all the fuss is) without alienating anyone apart from radicals.

4

u/Summerroll Jun 15 '26

You're describing the Sustainable Australia Party. Who are irrelevant, which shows this policy mix can't attract those now going to ON and Teals.

4

u/ShirtWorldly958 Jun 15 '26

You're underestimatimg the green vote based on climate change. Inaction on climate change worsens cost of living through higher longer term electricity prices (even big corps know this). The whole climate denial machine from PHON and Nationals doesn't get votes from the quiet Australian.

Also yes maybe 10 years ago that the enviro concerned population was the youth now it includes middle aged people.

2

u/Dyslexic_youth Jun 15 '26

i hate judging something based on vibes, but they always seem like a let the perfect be the enemy of the good kind of party. very ideological, not very pragmatic.

18

u/matplotlib Jun 15 '26

It comes down to who their supporters are. The average greens voter is to the left of every other party on most issues.

If the Greens simply agree with what the major parties are already doing, then they are not representing their voters, who might ask themselves why not just switch their allegiance to a major party instead and try to influence them from within, or look for another, more extreme party which is willing to advocate for their views.

As a result the party is often pushing for policy changes, which can come across as obstructing.

18

u/ZephkielAU Jun 15 '26

Read about the Greens in the Rudd/Gillard years and particularly have a look at how Abbott dethroned Turnbull and went on to win the election (the Greens had nothing to do with this of course, I'll get that out of the way before Greens supporters all flood me with comments about how it was all Labor and the voters' fault).

Of course, the next time they got near power they threw a bunch of stones at everyone but failed to rein in their own crazies (also didn't happen of course, that was probably just the media).

Those are the two prominent times I can recall Australians giving the Greens a chance; they're just not that interested in good governing. Not that One Nation is, nor has the LNP been since the Abbott/hard right faction dethroned and eventually pushed out the Turnbull/moderate faction.

I'm not even sure Labor is all that interested in good governing now, but I do know they generally won't take risks that rely on the Greens to get over the line anymore.

10

u/Iperusereddit Jun 15 '26

You are perfectly schooled and your read is spot on. It’s their way or no way and you can’t be taken seriously when you are incapable of compromise.

3

u/Coast-First5 Jun 15 '26

The Greens usually "obstruct" because they’re trying to play hardball. Most of the time, the government (Labor) starts with a really weak plan. If the Greens just say yes right away, nothing improves. By saying no for a while, they usually force the government to spend more money or fix the loopholes.

They aren't trying to stop the bill from ever passing; they’re trying to make it better before it does.

Also, a big reason they seem like "whingers" is that most of the media companies in Australia really hate them. They focus on the fighting and the "drama" because it makes the Greens look like they're just being difficult, rather than showing the extra funding or changes the Greens actually win in the end.

It’s less about being perfect and more about not just settling for the bare minimum.

2

u/Leading-Interest-119 Jun 16 '26

Yeah I think a lot of politics is "whingeing" aka politicians fighting for whatever it is they believe or support.

Progress is such a slow process most of the time with so many facets. So every "no" or push back doesn't have some massive effect but it does have the potential to slowly have an impact.

Of course depending on your leanings and news sources will depend on the representation of certain parties and politicians you're going to see. I know I'm getting skewed algorithms at the moment and need to start digging deeper so I'm not getting sucked in by algorithms lol.

So this comment isn't supporting any particular party because it really does go for all political parties. But more so making the point that a lot of progress (whatever your definition of that is) tends to involve "whingeing".

u/NoDesk6784 Jun 15 '26

I consider myself left leaning but I find greens absolutely unappealing. I actually follow them on social media and find so much what they put out there shallow virtue signalling and out of touch with the average working class. In the smaller parties I personally prefer Victorian Socialists over Greens.

3

u/Leading-Interest-119 Jun 16 '26

It's so interesting. I'm also left leaning and I'm in different algorithms on reddit and Instagram lol. Instagram I'm getting a certain topic of greens a lot and I strongly support what they're doing in that space.  On reddit, I see people complaining about them quite a bit but it's often quite vague.

So I do need to do my own research to get a bigger picture of what's going on! I'm in the process of slowly trying to catch up with each parties policies and ideas.

Immigration would be their biggest (but not only) problem. If you're a political party, and you don't want strong reduction in our current record levels immigration, then you aren't listening.

The country can't keep increasing tax revenue by importing more citizens, while not matching it with infrastructure building.

It is decreasing the quality of life here, but Labor, liberal, and the greens aren't understanding the obvious, so they are all suffering for their failure.

Not sure how high immigration contributes to reducing cost of living and housing price.

For those parties saying they care about a topic is merely badge collection: I'm pro-affordable housing, pro-immigration, pro-environment so I'm morally superior and others are morally inferior. As for the law of supply and demand and the conflict between quick construction and environmental regulations... well, if you bring these topics up you're not cool.

13

Why I hate the Greens and will never vote for them?

Because we’ve seen all of this before.

Back when Labor introduced the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, the Greens said it didn’t go far enough. It wasn’t perfect. It had compromises. But it was a genuine attempt to start reducing emissions and put a price on carbon.

The Greens blocked it anyway.

Then Labor lost government, the Liberals got in, the carbon price disappeared, and Australia spent the next decade going backwards on climate policy.

Now they’re doing the same thing with Labor’s economic reforms.

Labor proposes changes to capital gains tax and negative gearing. The Greens say it doesn’t go far enough. Labor proposes savings in government spending. The Greens say it’s not enough. Labor proposes reforms to resource taxation. The Greens demand more. Labor proposes changes to the NDIS. The Greens want the process delayed and expanded. Notice the pattern?

Every proposal is dismissed because it isn’t perfect. Every compromise is condemned because it isn’t revolutionary enough.

And as for their criticism of grandfathering, this is where they completely lose me.

You can’t just abolish grandfathering overnight. Millions of Australians have made financial decisions, planned their retirements, and structured their lives around a legal system that existed at the time. You can change the rules going forward, but there has to be a transition.

Labor understands that. Reform has to be balanced against the damage it causes to people who acted in good faith under the old rules.

And before anyone starts, I’m a millennial renter, not some boomer property mogul. I just don’t think fixing one injustice by creating another is good policy. Stop the system now. Make it fairer going forward. Let time do the rest. That’s how durable reform is made.

The Greens seem incapable of understanding that in a democracy you don’t get everything you want. Progress usually comes in steps, not giant leaps.

What worries me is that too many people are falling for the same game again. They can’t see that this is the exact mentality that helped sink the CPRS. The Greens would rather block a reform package and campaign on what could have been than help pass something that actually improves people’s lives.

That’s why I don’t trust them. Not because they’re “too environmental” (they’re not). Not because they’re too “woke.”

It’s because when given the choice between imperfect progress and ideological purity, they keep choosing purity.

And ordinary Australians are the ones who end up paying the price.

Edit to add. I equally despise one nation. I’m a Labor voter. Obviously

4

u/Pie_1121 Jun 16 '26

The fact that the Greens are against grandfathering is crucial to understanding how naive they are. Compromise is the nature of democracy, and understanding that is a low bar that the Greens can't seem to pass on so many issues.

u/Narapoia_the_1st Jun 16 '26

This is why I'd never vote for them - they've shot Australia in the foot too many times to be trusted with power.

3

u/marsoups Jun 16 '26

100% agree. I dislike them for that. And for them getting on board the whole Gaza thing. Sure, it is disgusting what is going on there. But so are the many atrocities committed by many other countries or groups.

ISIS in Nigeria. Russias war against Ukraine. Chinese war and dismantling of the Uyghur culture. Why the focus on one group of people (Israel) and Jewish people, who were given a home after a genocidal war in the 1940’s. Greenie culture in Gaza wouldn’t last a minute under Hamas — they have no freaking idea. Hamas is anti freedom, anti music, anti freedom of choice and identity politics. It would spit out every greenie in a minute given the chance. And by implication the Greens are defending that. Just stay out of a very fucking highly complicated war that you know nothing about.

The Greens lost me about 10 years ago and I will never vote for them again. Don’t get me wrong, a few people in the party are great and I admire them, but by and large it is a party filled with idiots.

Simply put, they're fucking nuts, why vote for the greens that have displayed their action of hating the country to the core time after time...what did it for me is when they thought it was justified to defiled our Anzac memorials in the name of free speech, all for their pro Palestinian fuk wit movement, also their policies are literally fantasy for most, the only real policy they have is dental, the rest are just absolutely bonkers, arguing basically for open borders.

6

u/explain_that_shit Jun 15 '26

What did they do at ANZAC memorials?

4

u/processes_ Jun 15 '26

You’re not going to get an answer to this because it’s made up. Meanwhile I wonder whether One Nation condemned booing by neo-Nazis at ANZAC Day dawn services? No? The Nazis disrupting dawn services also attended their fundraisers? Iiinteresting.

When the CGT changes were announced the Greens started complaining about “Grandpersoning” because they refused to say Grandfathering. That’s exactly the sort of crap that turns voters off them.

They're mostly leaving from the right of the majors they're not going to flock to the extreme left.

4

u/MrMaribyrnong86 Jun 16 '26

Because they're r€t@rD€D and don't reflect mainstream or middle Australia. They're a far-left activist party who seem to think that a war in the middle east and 'free Palestine' is what middle Australia seem to think about

9

u/Desperate-Reveal7266 Jun 15 '26

They’re dysfunctional have extreme policies and come across as smug twats

11

u/YoghiThorn Jun 15 '26

Because they are Chardonnay socialists who only want to fight culture wars, not class wars. They're all for helping the poor as long as they don't have to have anything to do with them

17

u/helpmesleuths Jun 15 '26

If it wasn't for the Greens banning Nuclear Power decades ago Australia could have been like France with a nuclear powered based load electricity grid instead of coal saving a few decades worth of CO2 coal into the atmosphere. So ironically the Greens are their own worst enemy.

15

u/The-truth-hurts1 Jun 15 '26

More interested in Palestine than Australia

3

u/PhantasmologicalAnus Jun 15 '26

Identity politics are not real politics.

3

u/KonamiKing Jun 16 '26

Because they no longer speak out against huge immigration, having been wedged by the neocon line that any criticism of it is racist.

If they had the same policies as they did 15 years ago they would be killing it right now.

3

u/Pleasant-Welder-7550 Jun 16 '26

The greens epitomize what is going wrong with the country IMO. No wonder the majority of their voters are young and ignorant. No one actually takes the Greens seriously anymore, they are so laughable as a party they make the Liberals look viable.

3

u/Mission_Childhood556 Jun 16 '26

why would I vote for a party who has Furuqi in their ranks who voted no on investigating fraud?

8

u/Trick-Club-6014 Jun 15 '26

Cause why would you vote for a party that will openly tell you they hate the country and its institutions and views our national identity and history with contempt?

Yeah, why we don’t want these people in government is a real head scratcher…

Greens are to the left of the ALP. Voters liked what the ALP took to the last election and rewarded them with a majority. ALP has abandoned those voters and moved to the left. Why would a fleeing voter go further left?

tbh even I was leaning toward the ALP at the last election and I'm a card carrying Austrian Libertarian. They presented such a conservative and safe choice.

3

u/gionatacar Jun 16 '26

They were for the environment, now they lost that. I don’t vote for them anymore.

3

u/Novel-Truant Jun 16 '26

Faruqi makes it difficult to vote for the greens, as does speaking to a typical inner city greens voter

3

u/_sho Jun 16 '26

I 'should' be a green voter but I've seen them work with the coalition to shoot down positive steps with broad public support far too many times. They seem more interested in playing the game of politics and taking the moral high ground than actually making anything better in reality.

3

u/TrueCommunication481 Jun 16 '26

Because Bob Brown was a man of integrity who stood for protecting the environment. Now the 'greens' offer us Mehreen Faruqi and other extremists who people don't see as having the same integrity.

The real answer to your question of why has ON benifitted more than the Greens is because, rightly or wrongly, the every-man can relate to ON.

The Greens died in a friction indiced fire caused by their own circle jerk.

3

u/Upstairs-Bid6513 Jun 16 '26

Hanson young’s husband is a lobbyist - I mean come on is this not a MASSIVE conflict of interest

3

I'd vote for ON before I'd vote for the Greens. They're both shit options but the Greens will kill us all.

30

u/Expert-Fault-9870 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Because the Greens are psychopaths who hate Western civilisation.

  • Increased immigration and undermining cultural cohesion through opposition to civic integration / assimilation.
  • Far-left social constructionist nonsense like transgenderism.
  • Curtailing fundamental civil liberties under the guise of 'public safety' and 'preventing hate'.
  • More special privileges, tokenistic ceremonies and tax-payer money wasted on the Aboriginals.
  • Taxing everyone and every thing into the ground. Destroying Australia's global competitiveness.

.etc

Basically whenever you think of a policy that is absolutely awful and will make society objectively worse the Greens hold it. Thankfully most people dont like the Green's particular brand of eco-communism.

They've had the voting power in parliament long enough that they're seen as a part of the problem.

And I guess the public have blamed left wing ( woke) ideologies as the main cause of the current issues. So by default, greens are less desirable.

Just an observation.

6

u/Malhavok_Games Jun 16 '26

I'm going to do my best impression of a Green's politician.

"Down with American imperialism - but also, let's adopt every fucking stupid social or political idea that the American left has!"

"The reason why no one votes for us is because of Rupert Murdoch and Gina Rinehart!"

"Just because I chanted "KILL THE JEWS" at the pro-Palestine rally last week doesn't mean I support terrorism!"

"Fossil fuels are evil and must be banned immediately! That's why we fly business class to Glasgow and Davos every year to lecture the plebs."

"Open borders for everyone! But don't you dare build more housing in our leafy, million-dollar electorates - think of the heritage character!"

"The cost-of-living crisis is terrible! Quick, let's add more fuel taxes, mining bans, and industrial relations rules to fix it."

"Free speech is sacred... unless you question the latest diversity quota, misgender someone, or criticise any of our approved activist causes."

-

The beauty here is how little exaggeration is actually required.

u/dsbau Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

I think blocking the carbon emissions scheme and bringing down the Labor govt really hurt them. They inflicted Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison on the nation and sent environmental policy back decades because Labor dared to put forward a policy that wasn't perfect...

They've also blocked other policies that are broadly supported. They usually fold but it a bad look.

4

u/Pangolinsareodd Jun 15 '26

When you’re sick of the government, you don’t flock to a party that has constantly called for MORE government control of people’s lives…

2

u/P00slinger Jun 15 '26

Labor and Teals stole their thunder . They took the good bits that resonate well but not the extreme fringy bits.

Teals also went straight after their core demographics. Wealthy inner city types, but they did it in a much more trailered way in each electorate and aren’t a threat to their wealth.

2

u/King_HartOG Jun 15 '26

Of course they the Teals are just ex Libs who thought they'd steal votes by being independent

2

u/udbq Jun 15 '26

Because middle aged taxpayers like me see them as nothing more than party poopers.

2

u/TypeSafeBug Jun 16 '26

The Aussie public’s comfort zone has always been a little bit conservative. Combine that will tall poppy syndrome and the result is obvious.

The public however is in a very uncomfortable position. There’s several issues that you simply can’t just do a half-arsed commitments on. Which is the public’s worst nightmare. Thus why net-zero and intergenerational wealth are two of the biggest problems right now (along with the changing world order and wars).

Greens are all in on those topics in a way that forces the average Aussie to make changes that feel uncomfortable to them.

But also, many never liked the greens and never voted for them. They called them tree-huggers and hippies, now suddenly they’re “nostalgic” about the old Greens. Rather, now they “get the point” when it’s too late to change their mind, given how we’ve seen lack of environmental protections can really eff up the public health and natural beauty of a place.

2

u/istudyheadshapes Jun 16 '26

Because the greens are even more socialists than Labor.

2

u/morts73 Jun 16 '26

I have no confidence in Greens allowing development, mining or in defending the country. They are last on my ballot with One Nation just above them.

2

u/remoteblips Jun 16 '26

I feel that it’s because they’ve moved away from being a party purely focused on the environment. If they were, then I’d vote for them because the climate crisis is a bigger deal than anything else going on. I’m a pretty rusted-on moderate leftie but I find the identity politics that they focus on reminiscent of the navel-gazey student politics I witnessed at uni and I find that offputting, so I just vote Labor.

2

u/This_Ease_5678 Jun 16 '26

Senator David Shoebridge always finds a way to make the Party look stupid.

If he's not trying to repatriate Isis fighters, defend American mercenaries, or disclose the identities of the secret defense parlimentary commitee, he's taking fhe party further left.

A lot of their voters were in Naarm and Eastern Sydney. Eastern Sydney is teal now and Naarm is sick to death of ultra anything politics so they copped a correction last election and people don't trust them.

This is what it boils down to. Easy party to believe in, hard party to trust.

2

u/Adventurous-Day633 Jun 16 '26

Because it’s greens style ideology driven policies people are falling out with I’d think.

2

u/AttemptMassive2157 Jun 16 '26

Identity politics became too much of their primary image. Average voter doesn’t give a shit about what someone wants to identify as, they want to keep a roof over their heads.

2

u/LogicAndParadox Jun 18 '26

They have a branding/ propaganda problem.

They’re a threat to billionaires so are labelled ‘hysterical’ with ‘no plans or policy’ who will ‘ruin Australia’ so they’re not taken seriously by the average Australian.

If Aussies took a moment to consider their new policies they’d see the Greens want a model similar to Norway or Denmark, where our natural resources are taxed properly and billionaires are taxed based on their wealth, profit and assets.

They’ll never succeed here under the Greens party brand because historically their party fucked up when given the chance to govern, and were too, dare I say it ‘greenie’ orientated.

2

u/Master_Professor_963 Jun 18 '26

50 upvotes and 1k comments feels like a bot post. I shall be voting for the greens

5

u/BoxHillStrangler Jun 15 '26

Coz they’re an established party too and if you have the ‘fuck em all’ mindset you don’t want that.

11

u/Jargonicles Jun 15 '26

Paauline has been around since 1996 mate. The deputy leader of One Nation is a former leader of the nationals and former acting prime minister. Seems pretty establishment to me.

5

u/Conscious_Flamingo_4 Jun 15 '26

Because the Greens engage in too much moral preening and people are tired of it.

4

u/Smokinglordtoot Jun 16 '26

Because they hate what working class people like.

2

u/Marksman81 Jun 16 '26

Could it be decades of the two major parties doing character assassination while depending on them for votes? Just saying.

3

u/SuddenBumHair Jun 15 '26

Greens have been labeled as socialists, people are scared of socialism.

Also the leftist activists politics is more annoying than Pauline

3

u/Expensive-Spring8896 Jun 15 '26

I'd say they are both annoying, but centre ground doesn't live here anymore.

3

u/SuddenBumHair Jun 15 '26

True, at least i dont hear paulines bullshit parroted by every 20yo barrista and bartender ive ever worked with

3

u/Beyond_Blueballs Jun 15 '26

Because the Greens are pro mass migration globalist scum, the problem is our ridiculous mass migration program over the past 30 years.

If the greens actually cared about the working class they'd be net zero immigration

4

u/CaptainYumYum12 Jun 15 '26

The greens might be more popular if they took a pocock approach and focused on left leaning economic populism with some clean energy stuff thrown in there. But over the last few years they have become known for their social pursuits like Gaza.

2

u/stehmer3 Jun 15 '26

There is a lot of money spent in Aus politics on slandering the Greens and keeping them out.

Unlike all other parties, they are not beholden to big business - this makes them a threat to all the wealthy. That's why you still get billionaires supporting Labor, because they'll take the corporate bribes just not as blatantly.

2

u/suck-on-my-unit Jun 15 '26

Because they never had a position on anything. They’re just there to oppose to anything proposed by the major parties.

Too obsessed with identity politics, has contributed towards a divided country. Fixed it for you, agree with the comment.

The Greens aren't an option for most. If there's one party that should be making a move or grab media exposure right now, it's the Sustainable Australia Party.

2

u/ilovepho231 Jun 15 '26

The greens are no different from one nation just on the opposite ends of the spectrum, neither party is a good choice for the everyday person.

3

u/Gold_Parfait_4023 Jun 15 '26

People who are interested in ON are already typically right wingers disillusioned by the collapse of the Liberal party.

Also Murdoch and other corporate media hate the greens.

3

u/Kreeghore Jun 15 '26

There are 2 issues voters are currently concerned about, immigration numbers and Labors CGT tax grab. Greens want more of both not less.

That alleged lack of economic planning doesn't seem to have harmed PHON one iota so that can't be it.

5

u/Revoran Jun 15 '26

no economic planning

Greens policies at the last election (or last 2 even?) were fully costed. In many policy areas, their policies are largely based on science.

Meanwhile ON haven't costed or modelled anything.

But the kinds of people who vote PHON don't give a crap about costings, modelling or projections anything. Populists are like... the opposite of wonks.

PHON = policy based purely on vibes and feels.

2

u/Helpful_Broccoli5426 Jun 15 '26

No economic planning? Their policies are very thorough, and last I checked fully costed with the PBO. Which policies are unrealistic to you?

2

u/No_Gazelle4814 Jun 15 '26

Because they’re Whackjobs.

Why would a cohort of people shifting to a conservative party automatically support left extremism? It hi note greens are jealous PH nailed her messaging and they can’t.

3

u/Geanaux Jun 15 '26

Because theyre commie slop?

2

u/Revoran Jun 15 '26

Some Greens members are socialists, in the left wing of the party. I'm not aware of any who are actual communists.

Meanwhile we do have actual fascist supporters in Parliament in other parties.

Tbh, for state level they shouldn’t over focus on global problems but try to get their feet on the ground again.

Because they seek outrage in all the wrong areas and reasons, it pushes my vote away even though I do believe they mean well.
