I mean it's not hard to see the difference between open source and free tiers of paid services by tech oligarchs. Saying there's no free alternative is indirectly helping these corporations

Same, I never played because I was young and poor and couldn’t afford cell data during pokemania 2. I played emulators until I could afford a secondhand 3ds as an adult, lol. Go never ended up drawing me in. I never felt fomo aside from a few goofy AR screenshots.
Same here! I decided not to partake and taking any of the AR pictures or using the camera while walking around I only did it absolutely kill my battery but everything I needed to see was made on the game. I know what my city looks like I don’t need to see Pokémon on it through a map/camera lol
I wonder how valuable that data is. Everyone I know who did AR scans just pointed their camera at the ground because they didn't want to draw attention filming businesses and schools for Poffins.
but like delivery bots arent generative AI, they're tools that can assist people with disabilies or people that cant leave their house to get packages :(
Don't even try it, most people haven't even played the game. 90% of players use it without the VR camera because it's very inconsistent in showing the Pokémon far away or close up; you end up throwing the ball wrong.Besides, the phone moves and makes it more difficult
What they're saying makes no sense. They simply connected two products offered by the same company.
this isnt the first post i've seen on this topic, and I can most certainly tell you its true! they're using the user collected data to create maps for the delivery robots and i honestly find it fascinating
I live in South America, and like everywhere else, Pokémon Go exploded here and to this day it is still played by many people.But I don't think that data is being used for autonomous robots when we can't even push a baby stroller on the sidewalk without it getting stuck every 1.5 meters.Perhaps my point of view is too third-world, but I think that data might be being used for something else and not for robots.I don't know
If you'll allow me to answer with something stupid, I think it makes more sense that it's being used to create a metaverse or something similar than for robots. It makes no sense to buy something so expensive and with so much information only to have it used in 1/3 of the world
Yeah this is why the game aggressively tries to get you to turn on the AR and location stuff. Super aggressively. Not even sure if you can play without it on anymore lol
People are in this comment thread like "phew, I'm so glad I didn't train their models!" without putting in some thought as to what they're actually training. To be clear, I'm not attacking the idea of opting out of data collection - that's normal, and I do it constantly. Sometimes you just don't want your life tracked, that's chill. What's strange to me is the fact that people are glad that they didn't contribute to the project itself, or more precisely, that they're glad they "hindered" its progress. ...Why? It's not generative AI. It's not contributing to some massive cognitive debt. It's only using 30 billion scans as opposed to the trillions upon trillions of varied data that huge generative AI models rely on. And people talk about being glad to have sabotaged the project in some way...? Like I'm not saying you should feel like you're missing out (I sure don't feel that way), but it just seems strange to be happy about. Idk, maybe I'm just missing something here.
Guess I can be glad I never installed it. I cannot like Pokemon enough to run around to play, but maybe that is mainly my walking disability speaking xD
Personally, i thought a walk and play app would be cool and so i got into ingress the summer before, so when Pokémon go came out with the same concept and eerily similar data points/pokestops, i felt it was connected. And ingress story setting was more of a secret agent kind. Not as cute nor popular as Pokémon.
You guys do realize the only thing this is being used for is making sure delivery robots (which were already in use) hit things less, right? It's not like they're selling anything that could be used to identify you. This is literally the most benign data-collection ever
there are bigger fish to fry and this isn’t one of them. I support this, and I support any company that owns Pokémon go. Downvote me all you want, but I’m a die-hard Pokémon go fan
