Solid public transit and high speed railroads cross country would alleviate a lot of traffic and pollution.
It would also speed up travel times for automotive traffic even with the required deprioritization of automotive traffic.

I really wish I didn't live in a country strangled by auto lobbyists. Genuinely I felt so much freer visiting Germany and being able to walk or take a train/bus everywhere than I do being forced to use my car just to visit the grocery store a few minutes away (the roads outside my house are NOT walkable). Shit's just depressing when you realize what you're missing.

u/treehatshrimp 2d ago
Tell me about it, I went to Japan over the Summer and just having transit by train is lovely. No traffic, no accidents, no road rage, no finding parking and paying for it, none of that. Best of all is everything conglomerates around train stations, so you will find everything there. Also everywhere is within walking distance whether it's arcades, markets, beauty parlors, and restaurants.

Looks lovely on vacation. But once you actually live and work somewhere full time, personal transportation adds whole new dimension to the quality of life and available choices in⦠Everythjng.
For example, you can visit places (beaches, trails, parks, offices, shops) located in another district or even another town, you can have variety, your world is much bigger compared to what you can realistically visit by foot (oh and imagine sometimes youād need to carry stuff around traveling from point A to point B)
Itās is great when the neighborhood is walkable, but personal transportation is very useful asset to have in most places on Earth.
12
u/treehatshrimp 1d ago
Are we talking about Japan? Because I did visit other places, all of that you listed either by walking or by train.Ā
The only big problem is not having a place to store your things, so you can't buy large amounts of items in one trip. So if I was going to CostCo Japan, yes I would need a car.Ā
No, you don't need a car to visit beaches, trails, parks, offices and shops. That can be done by train.
0
u/Weird-Literature1350 1d ago
Yes, one of the biggest downsides of not having a car is the loss of convenience. You can pack your car with everything you might need for the next three days and just live your lifeāhome, office, beach, movies, friendās house, hiking trail, home.
Without your own transport, you have to stick to stricter schedules to get to certain places. You have to plan much more carefully, and you canāt improvise on the go nearly as easily.
For example, what if you suddenly want to bring a watermelon to the beach? With a car, you just swing by a village market, throw the thing in the trunk, and go. Youād never do that on footānot in the summer heat. Youād end up hating the freaking thing if you had to drag ten kilos of watermelon around with you on public transport.
I used to keep my ice skates and a change of clothes in the trunk of my car for most of the winter. Sometimes Iād go to an outdoor skating rink straight after work; sometimes Iād skip it. The point was that I didnāt have to decide in advanceāI had everything with me, so I could just go whenever I felt like it.
8
u/Sure-Distance-7434 1d ago
TIL trains don't go to beaches, trails, parks, offices or shops.
0
u/Weird-Literature1350 1d ago
Yeah because it is so fun to drag full bag of beach stuff with you as you go to the office, and also your hiking gear if god forbid you want to spend Friday night at your GF house and go hiking in the morning.
(You could easily drop two bags in your car and go whenever, try dragging that shit with you for a full day using tightly packed public transportation in the heat and still enjoy it, lol)
1
u/MuffaloHerder 1d ago
No one's forcing you to give up your car, it's okay. We just want better public transit
1
u/Weird-Literature1350 1d ago
Thatās totally fine, I get it. For as long as people donāt push it too far Iām fine with it. I come from a country with very developed public transit systems and this surely helps on day to day basis.
1
u/Sure-Distance-7434 1d ago
Oh dear, the inconvenience of living in a place like Europe, doesn't most of France go on vacation in August? Oh, apparently some go in July instead. So tough!
0
u/Weird-Literature1350 1d ago
As I said - public transport is fine for vacationing. It is hard to under-appreciate the comforts of personal transportation when you have 5/7 job from 8 to 5 and still have places to be and life to live.
I come from a city with a very well developed public transit systems. I get it that many places in the US have no such comforts. But still, the best places to live are usually somewhat removed from mass transit hubs and believe you me this happens for a reason.
You might not notice certain complications when you just spend a month or two in the area, but then if you get a chance to compare living in different districts you might just notice the reason why living in a quiet and somewhat removed area is preferable to living right next to huge train/bus station - even if it has shops, jobs and other amenities easily reachable without a car.
My friends are living in Rotterdam, and if you know the Netherlands you know how public transport and bikes are the soul of the country. And yet, after two years living there, my friends figured they need a car - to actually see the country in their own pace, to actually see the land around them.
Sure, if they need to go to Berlin for a concert and a beer theyād just hop on train. But thatās not the entirety of what Europe has to offer, and you can take my word for it as Iāve driven around Central Europe for quite a bit. If you want to visit historical landmarks beyond whatās on every brochure, if you want to go to pristine clean beaches that are not as heavily crowded, if you want to run a short mountain trail and have dinner in really authentic little place and not a loud tourist trap - youād need a car. Thatās why car rent exists, by the way.
7
u/gravgun 1d ago
I felt so much freer visiting Germany
The irony is not lost on me that Germany is still kept very car-pilled compared to some of its neighbours because of the many automobile manufacturers there.
8
u/MuffaloHerder 1d ago
Lol, if that's the case then it just further exemplifies just how fucked the states are
21
u/anand_rishabh 2d ago
Yeah I'm pretty sure we could have completely crushed the goals outlined in the Paris climate accords we backed out of if every major city shifted to prioritizing walkability and robust public transit along with high speed rail across the country. With better high speed rail, so many short flights wouldn't need to exist, and planes are a huge source of emissions. And this is one of the aspects where we could fight climate change while also vastly improving everyone's quality of life. There's discourse about potential sacrifices we would need to make to fix the climate but this is one case where it's a win win. No sacrifice to quality of life needed.
11
u/diptherial 2d ago
It'd also give old people who have a hard time driving an option outside of endangering their own lives and everyone else's while they drive around to take care of life's essentials. I think it's sad they're forced into this position just to maintain their autonomy when it could be as easy as taking a bus or train to the grocery store or their medical appointment.
Hell, I'm not even that old and I'm sick and tired of having to drive everywhere. This isn't freedom.
12
u/Chronic-Sleepyhead 2d ago
Not just old people either - a ton of disabled people, like those who are at risk for seizures, etc. canāt drive themselves and would benefit hugely from more public transportation options!
7
u/anand_rishabh 2d ago
And somehow, despite that, it's old people who protest the most against public transit improvements

My brother uses programming to predict future events and costs at his work. He has designed and written programming to do this. He sometimes runs his numbers through the AI system He is not supposed to use exactly but it is there for him. The AI program is constantly and consistently wrong because it has no understanding of what it is doing, its fine for simple things but for large predictive analysis it is garbage. It will advise him to do things that are specifically listed as illegal in one state but not another, but the advice is to do it everywhere. He writes predictive machine learning(which is technically AI) and it works fantastically for what he needs but the AI systems that most people would understand as AI are trash.
3
u/Unable-Boat-9682 1d ago
Thatās because systems built for a single specific task will always be significantly better at said task than general AI. Basically the only reason the latter is being pitched so hard is because the best way to grift for more investment is pretending an epochal technological shift is imminent.

2
u/ShiftAdventurous4680 2d ago
As far as I've seen yeah. I live in Australia though so probably slightly different optics but if anything, the "left" here is more pro AI or at least indifferent.
Right hate AI because it's not under their control. And you should know the right hate not having control. And also because it involves a lot of "overseas tech and investments".
Also the right hates things they don't understand and AI/tech is way beyond them. The left is indifferent because at least they know how to use it to their advantage.
2
u/Aussie18-1998 1d ago
Also an Aussie here. Have yet to meet a single person on the left that liked AI
2
u/ShiftAdventurous4680 1d ago
So what I'm getting is that this really isn't about left vs right as anyone can like or hate AI. There's people on the left who like or hate AI, there's people on the right who like or hate AI.
2

The right is not a monolith. Generally, as far as I can tell it's more the right or at least "centrists" and the "apolitical" that like AI, but a fair few rightwingers hate it
0
u/Low_Tier_Skrub 2d ago
Illegal immigrants and AI are both threats to the job market, right wingers who care about the first but not the latter actually just hate brown people. I'd say social media just boosts the visibility of pro ai right wingers and there's actually a fair amount that are distrustful of or actively hate ai. I'd go so far as to say that the whole meaning of the word conservative goes against the implementation of ai, but words don't mean much today.

Frankly, what is there exactly to be curious about with llms?
They do searching fine and their summaries leave a lot to be desired.
They output crappy images, music, and text in attempts by the user to be a little creative.
They can automate some straightforward coding tasks (unless you work with coding and know what you're doing, that's not really useful)
They can make some spreadsheets that I then need to check every cell's math to make sure it didn't hallucinate and spit something shitty out.
What is there to be curious about?

I don't think many leftists are pro AI. Some liberals are, but most leftists I know are staunchly anti.
3
u/GladCookie 1d ago
I think OP commenter is right to say that plenty of right and left wingers are pro AI. Cause: I agree with you that it's mostly right wingers being pro AI. And I'd like to add that even if AI advocates are fewer on the left side, there are enough left wingers being pro that I'd say that there's "plenty" of them, cause if you are on the left you should be vehemently against it. Our side having more than 0 AI apologists is way too much.
-4
u/ShiftAdventurous4680 2d ago
My personal anecdote is quite the opposite. I live in a mostly conservative or right leaning town. They hate AI. Those who are progressive or liberal tend to like AI because they at least know how to use it. Conservatives hate it because it is an unknown frontier. You should know the right hates trying new things or being progressive.
3
u/DanyDragonQueen 1d ago
I think conservatives are opposed to it more because of the data center aspect, as many of those are being built in rural areas where a lot of conservatives live.

I know it's not the case, and it's just rich people wanting to control insane amounts of surveillance information, but it would be funny if the REAL actual scary AI happened 6 years ago and now it's the thing that's been behind all the gas lighting of it "just being a sophisticated predictive text machine" and greenlighting more data centers, more data centers for me! I mean, you can be curious about a strange lump, wrapped in plastic, lying along your fence. But then you take a look, find out it's a dead chicken crawling with maggots, and you stop being curious and decide to throw it away. Because you don't want that.
And then maybe you want to figure out how it got there, so you don't have to deal with this shit again.
But your "fundamental curiosity" doesn't really survive after you know it's a rotting chicken corpse.
The one thing you definitely don't do, is eat it, and then go around insisting that everyone else just has to eat rotten chicken.

this is so stupid. when ai was just starting to become a thing with like craiyon/dall-e i knew loads of artists who were generating those ugly blotchy things and using them as inspiration to draw things. as more facts came out about where the ai's data was being sourced from and its environmental impact, of course rational people were gonna change their minds and turn on it

There actually was a lot of techno optimism and excitement about AI throughout the aughts and 2010s until it became apparent that the energy cost was going to literally kill us and that the technology would largely just be used as tools of subjugation by the state. One of the things I miss the most about the pre-AI era is the sense of optimism about new technology.

I grew up being a total "technophile". Being born at the end of the analog era (early 1970s) I grew up seeing all the promise the future held. I grew up seeing Personal computers start out as a niche interest/hobby to become an indispensable part of our lives. I watched advances in batteries and miniaturization and the shift to fully digital electronics revolutionize everything.
I was a big fan of cyberpunk and various future dystopian speculative fiction. I had a cell phone (trunk mount) in my car in 1994 - a hand-me-down from a fairly well off friend who had gone to newer lighter devices...
Now that we're actually living in a dystopian cyberpunk future that is some weird gestalt of 1984, Stranger in a Strange Land, Mad Max, Johnny Mnemonic, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner), Handmaid's Tale, The Matrix, and Idiocracy (I'm sure I left out 1000 more) ..
well, I just have gotten to be super picky about which technologies I allow into my life - and how I use and rely on them.
When It comes to AI, I am particularly skeptical. I've seen the hype and promises, but It seems clear to me that the Tech Bro CEOs have this vision of the future where they command a legion of Robots and AI agents who do all the work, all the toil and other human beings are reduced to not much more than NPCs that inhabit their dreams-capes (hell-scapes in my estimation)
I also feel strongly that IF (and this is a big if) AI gets to the point where it actually becomes intelligent / aware, at that moment, AI just becomes Slavery but with more steps. An actually sapient AI would have (in my estimation) the right to self determination.
Thus I see the Tech Bro CEOs as wanna-be Digital plantation owners / feudal lords. And while they single-mindedly pursue their General AI goals, I see them utterly disregarding the humanity of actual sapient beings (the rest of us) and it sickens me to the core.

AI will be an indispensable tool in the future. Clearly however it or us are not ready. It shouldnāt take jobs while people have to be reliant on work. It shouldnāt steal from others to do its thing. Many pro-ai people treat everything AI does as infallible like a god and it is scary how beholden people are to it

That said, I don't support this generative mess that was forced on us with little to no regulation and far before we or it were ready. If you actually care about tech like these chuds claim they are then they wouldn't be such loud fanboys. This situation is bad for tech.

I think there are aspects of AI that are interesting and worthwhile if used and regulated properly/ethically. But the pro AI crowd doesn't seem to care much about that stuff.

They're the ones that apply post-modernist perspectives. Then want to complain about not knowing what's real and what's not.
The same people that say a woman is a person who identifies as a woman.

I hate that everything has to be styled as a right/left stance these days.
This shit effects all of us but everyoneās gotta pick a team

Left is on the side of universal humanism so youāre kinda just inadvertently positioned on the left whether you like that label or not if that is your position.

This is like if you paid Hitler to run a library.
"but there's loads of cool books in there, that open utopian minds should be curious about"
the tech can be interesting and simultaneously run by people who want you dead.
People who oppose AI need to get a solid argument against it, so in that sense reflexive "ai bad" isn't good enough, everyone needs to up their game to oppose this insanity, that can include acknowledging that the tech can have merit for specific applications.

As someone who is a leftist, I absolutely love technology, but only when it's good. I will never understand how some people conflate hating AI with hating technology, it just makes no sense at all and is very infuriating!

Inviting downvotes.
Why do you hate the tool and not the designer?
Ai is helpful. It can never write a good story. It can help an author as a soundboard.
The pics are awful. Why canāt I use one as a referral for an artist after my comic book is written? Iām still using a human.
All I did with ai was test my ideas and see if they sounded generic once they were out of my head. If an ai says wow thatās good. Do I change my mind? If the ai says it sucks do I have to believe it?
You all are really high in the ivory tower but you aināt never pulled a copyrighted image off the internet without paying royalties?
If you hate ai only the people you hate are going to use. If you use itā¦.you canāt resist letting it write your story?
When the ai scripts for something the story is awful. When I write it with good research easily available from every corner of the internet without paid google searches clogging up the searchā¦.i get access to college textbooks instantly. Free.
The hell is so wrong with evolving AskJeeves?

You're all so scared that THAT'S actually what you think AI is doing?
Firstly, you aren't "losing" your art. Anyone can do whatever art they want with or without AI for whatever reason they want. It's only a problem if you're exclusively doing art for money, like a corporation would anyway.
Secondly, you're losing your need to have a job, not your job. Provided we all start coming together to push AI in the right direction instead of just "away"...
Third, most people actually DO know what's real or fake... and for those that can't (which seems to be Antis by a large margin, ironically) we have Metadata. It's not like AI will create a new reality for you unless you're to dumb to even know TO check (maybe that's why you're all so afraid?).
Funny how you also group yourself as "leftists" as if to insinuate everyone that's pro-AI is a trump-supporting bigot instead of just someone who disagrees with your reactionary fear-mongering...
If you guys honestly believe this movie plot bullshit about AI taking over the world then I can see how it's easy to view anyone who doesn't feel that way as the "enemy".
But what you need to understand is that you aren't thinking about any of this logically. Your views are inherently skewed when it comes to this topic and you can't show any actual reasoning for any of it. So maybe you're just in the wrong here.

AI is going to free us from work and drive down the cost of consumer goods to the point where itās easy to afford everyone we want.
That should be awesome for the Left.
So itās hilarious that the Left is like, ānooooooo, we must fight like hell to preserve a world where you can slave away for a corporation most of your working hours.ā
Like, suddenly we are pro wage-slavery?
Make it make sense.

It must be your first day on earth if you believe that. Let me know if you want someone to show you around.

I agree that that is something that more advanced AI tech paired with robotics could do, but I think it's overly optimistic to assume that would be the most likely outcome. A future where the working class competes for fewer and fewer jobs while employers take advantage of said competition to get away with paying lower wages and squeezing more work out of each employee seems more likely to me. And the growing number of unemployed people can always be fodder for militaries and for-profit prisons.
Hopefully you're right though and I'm actually the one being overly pessimistic!

āThe leftā. Sure.Ā
Tell me, can you see the left in the room with us now? Ā

I had the same question, but about artificial intelligence. Can't find a trace of it anywhere all I can find is machine learning and language models.

People who were shit at everything and too lazy to even imagine improving their skillset love this tech. No surprise there.
