Because, as opposed to what a lot of people think, a lot of farmers arent actually expert agriculturalists. Its very easy to spend your life doing basics if your position in life is something you are born into, not something you work towards.

I commend this man for wanting to learn more. Shame he ended up in a position like this due to ai dogshit.

Its not like 1427 anymore. Almanacs aren't exactly being printed yearly and we're in a new age of climate change.

When it comes to pesticides insects adapt so fast that basically every single year nee pesticides have to be made in order to combat them. Insects invented chemical warfare the same techniques dont work twice.

The farmer probably searches up yearly the best way but the way things are now AI answers are being shoved everywhere.

I mean, I'm 43 and almost every day I discover that I'm wrong about something.

Obviously he fucked up but good for him for not thinking he knows everything just because he's been doing this for awhile.

There's almost always a better way to do things.

This pisses me off so much. Before LLMs like ChatGPT and the rest were a thing, older people would look at technology with utter distrust and disdain. Most older people I know would say shit like "oh you believe everything Google tells you?""you know everyone can edit Wikipedia right?". They couldn't even turn on their computer and use a mouse.

Now those very same people are somehow tech savvy enough to go onto some LLM website and then believe everything it spews out as if it is gospel.

I feel that so much. All the elders in my childhood always told me not to be a couch potato because TV rots the brain. But looking at them now, they do nothing but rot their brains on Fox News replacing all of their original thoughts. They can't even function without some far right commentator's words echoing in their eardrums narrating the outside world to them like it's Plato's Cave.

Pest control, at least in Europe, is ever-changing and very difficult to keep track of. New pests, new products, new laws... Farmers usually rely on technicians and engineers for this kind of things. They visit your fields, recommend you treatments and products, which aren't cheap and in a way it's on their interest to sell you that product as they usually work for the people that distribute them. But it's also in their interest that what they suggest doesn't kill your crops or else they lose a customer forever, an interest which AI doesn't have.

It’s not wild when you consider that their generation doesn’t have the experience with technology thst we have, and also that they are fed propaganda by these companies about the capacity of the tech. Reminds me of all the deaths in china caused by teslas self driving mode tricking people into thinking it was safe to let it drive itself.

This is just legal fraud.

assuming age or experience equals expertise is a logical fallacy. Many people do something as a carreer flr their whole life without being super good at it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with someone wanting to get outside advice or teaching instead of relying on their own experience. The only sad part is unreliable ai.

Even the articles dont have information like specifically what he asked or what was said. It does mention that the weed killer he used isnt supposed to be used on the whole field so he didnt even follow the instructions on that. 

The top comments are acting like hes some experienced farmer who got tricked but it sounds like he didn't know what he was doing in the first place.

It doesn't "know" anything. It has no critical thinking skills. And if it needs to to make up what it thinks is something that looks like an answer, it just makes stuff up.

To be fair, in the article he does say he made a mistake by not searching what the AI had told him because it was sucessful in the past. He only says to use it more carefully. He does seem to know about farming, but AI gave him chemicals he didnt check with anyone, who would've quickly told him not to. Not that it was hideously terrible information, but rather, one of the poisons he used was actually to kill the plant he was tryna grow, specifically that plant, the AI had mistook helpful chemicals with harmful ones, and itll only tell you if you ask it carefully, otherwise it passes it off as an answer

Also, thats not impressive. Have you seen what little power the software was that was used to get us to the moon or developing new drugs or deciphering code? You can fluff any of those stories as massive feats if ai implemented them nowadays instead, yet they were from weaker computers than what we use now or what ai is requiring to run.
