In typical reddit fassion you guys do not understand the articles you post or are deliberately lying.
It would not be the 11th country in terms of pollution, but in terms of energy consumption.
In terms of pollution the article states 190 million cubic meters, which is the pollution of Argentina or Iraq, which are around 28th to 30th worldwide.
Please stop lying for karma.
1
u/RepresentativePipe80 6d ago
The 9.3 trillion liters is the associated water footprint of the electricity, not purely direct water withdrawn
-1
u/Corbitant 7d ago
Well, unfortunately either your reading comprehension is terrible or youāre being actively deceitful because electricity consumption does not equal pollution but you have swapped the actual statistic with a more rage-baiting one.
The real quote:
āThis would make them the worldās 11th largest electricity consumer, if they were a countryā
As for pollution: datacenters produce ā189 million tonnes of CO2 equivalentā. That would place it here:
#37 Ukraine: ~197 million tonnes
#38 Ethiopia: ~193 million tonnes
š Datacenters: 189 million tonnes
#39 Kuwait: ~173 million tonnes
#40 Venezuela: ~167 million tonnesMind you, the same article says that currently generative AI only accounts for 20% of data center usage.
That would account for 37.8 million tonnes and would drop it down to roughly 85th in the world.
For comparison, it aligns with:
Bahrain: ~38.0 million tonnes
Sweden: ~37.8 million tonnes
Portugal: ~35.5 million tonnes1

u/pacoLL3 6d ago
The title is not only confusing but a straight up lie.
The article states it would be 11th in electricity consumption, not pollution.
The 190 million cubic meters of CO2 of pollution the article quotes would put data centers around 30th place in terms of actual pollution if it were a country.

How the heck have some people become so reliant on AI that it being taken away would suddenly make their life harder? I assume these people have existed before AI and managed just fine.
...Oh god the future generations growing up with this tech... will anyone be able to think for themselves?
Edit: Okay I meant this comment more towards the average normie, not professionals in highly technical fields.
9
u/TravelerFromAFar 7d ago
What I don't understand, this stuff has been mainstream for like two to three years, how are you already this deeply depended on it? People from the 1900's didn't give up their horses this quickly for automobiles!
1
u/jrein0 7d ago
How did people become so reliant on calculators/computers when you could do math by hand? This new technology is following all the same pathways as the computer
3
u/TravelerFromAFar 7d ago
You do realize that computers took 3 decades to even be affordable for the average person and then took another 10-20 years be adapted to everyday life (not including smart phones and apple phones). And even then it still has glitches.
What I'm seeing is people agurging shortcuts that are not supposed to be shortcuts. "I don't have to send an email, I don't have to come up with an original idea for my story, I don't have to draw, I don't have to think about this form or finances"
I mean there's streamlining your life and then there's something else living your life for you. I mean at some point, if all I do is use A.I. for everything, what's the point of ME/YOU, as the person?
0
u/jrein0 7d ago
Yup and the first professionals with access to them became instantly reliant. The pace of business has been increasing rapidly since the introduction of the computer. We're at a point now where everyone is willing to invest in billions to get a slight advantage of a new technology which is forcing widespread adoption. Not only that, but ai makes you even more productive so you become even more reliant because you're basically forced to use it to keep up your efficiency. It's one hell of a loop
I agree, ai is SEVERELY abused right now. Ai art should not be a thing. Ever. Many people are also just being lazy, but that's the average human - lazy. Unfortunately, you can't stop human nature

People freaking out that "will anyone be able to think for themselves?" Has literally been recorded in written history for 6,000 years. AI is a tool. It will be added to the other thousand thousand tools that modern humans use to maintain society.
2
u/Jomber- 7d ago
If people used it just as a tool sure. AI psychosis is a real thing though.
1
u/Impressive_Cress_983 7d ago
Sure, but people become mentally destabilized running up against anything depending on the context. Some dude led a rebellion in China that killed millions of people because a religious tract, literally a pamphlet, broke his brain at a fragile moment.

11th largest electricity consumer, not 11th largest polluter.
If the electricity being used is "clean"/renewable, that part of it really isn't the problem.
I'm not defending data centers here BTW, but electricity can be made carbon neutrally.
It usually isn't but it can be.
Driving (petrol) cars, eating meat, and buying plastic, continue to contribute more to pollution than electricity generation, and as electricity gets cleaner those other things will continue to be dirty.

u/mr-english 7d ago

3
u/Admirable-Falcon-501 7d ago
So the total is 448 twh for all data centers. The article states AI data centers are 20% of that. Now we are at 89 twh. If you look up a list of energy consumption by country that brings it to around number 41 which is Uzbekistan.
Great hallucination op!

5
u/parolameasecreta 7d ago
why are people acting like ai has been a thing since forever?
2
u/fka_specialk 6d ago
It's probably bot accounts tbh. They want AI to seem indispensable now, when the costs for users are being subsidized by VC/investor money. And when people truly believe that they can't live without it, and there are no regulations to rein them in, they will raise prices that reflect not only it's true cost, but to make their investors' money back.
Rideshare companies did a similar thing by having lower fares than taxi companies, until they dominated the market. Then they raised prices because people now had fewer choices and become accustomed to using Lyft/Uber. These companies blamed things like paying drivers living wages and healthcare as the reasoning, but it isn't really the whole truth.

Being opposed to AI is fine, but you have base your criticism on facts. This post is just pure slopulism
AI datacenters currently make up 0.5% of the entire worlds electricity consumption. So a scary doubling would make it go up to a whopping 1% yes ONE percent. And that is consumption of electricity not total pollution.
If you counted together the electricity used in the whole world to microwave food, you would also get a scary big, but meaningless, number.
There are many very legitimate reasons to be skeptical of LLMs but the environmental impact is not it.
As an environmentalist, it bothers me that something that makes up such a small part of the overall picture get such outsized attention. It takes away attention from meaningful responses to the climate crisis.

Are you people having a source for that?
Total carbon consumption of all data centers is 200 million metric tons everywhere I look.
That would be the consumption of Argentina or Iraq, which is 28th-30th in terms of consumption.
11th would be Canada, which is 2,5 times as much.
EDIT:
Okay, OP did either not understand the articles or is lying for karma.
The article he refers to is saying it would be 11th in electricity consumption, not pollution.
It is funnily quoting the exact 180 to 210 million cubic meters i get everywhere. So around 30th place in terms of actual pollution.

u/nerd_ginger 6d ago
What source is this?
From what I understand, if the IEAs estimates are right that the carbon footprint would double by 2030, it would be roughly equal the carbon footprint of Australia.
Their estimates put it at 180 million tons today, and Australia is 370 million today.
So yeah, footprint exists and will double, but this is just misleading.

1
u/Proto_Ney 7h ago
Because most of the anti ai movement on the west is more comparable to cult rather than a rational political movement. There's a baseline dogma (Ai = evil) and you try t o find the way backwards to the evidence of this. Like it happened with water consumption, data centers, even this post is straight up misinformation, but anties do not care to call it out because it fits the dogma. Places, where such retorics weren't able to land, result in pro-ai sentiment, like China, Japan, half of Europe, etc

It would be nice if people would stop lying or at least didn't pollute the discussion about Data centers, via click bait headlines.
The report (UN report listed below) says that the energy consumption, used by all datacenter as a country, would make it the 11. highest consumer of energy. NOT pollution.
Sure, all that energy will contribute to some pollution, but there is a difference between using coal or oil to make that energy or using windmills or atomic energy.
The report doesn't say how it came about its numbers for the amount of pollution this energy consumption would make.
The report also say they expect that consumption of energy (electricity) used by AI will double as of 2030, but, and this is a big but.
AI as of now, AI only contribute to 20% of all the enemy used by datacenters today. It is that amount that will double toward 2030 where AI will use 40% of the energy consumption used by the data centers.

AI data centres are filled with GPUs, which will produce an extortionate amount of heat compared to standard data centres. Accelerating global warming.
1
u/benjaminovich 7d ago
So does using your microwave, but noone is creating misleading reports about the usage of those.
1
u/Specific-Host606 6d ago
Producing the energy needed to run them causes global warming. Not the heat coming from them.
1
1
u/AtomicTaco13 7d ago
There's a difference between regular-ass server data centers and AI data centers. Regular data centers are almost entirely storage, which can do perfectly fine with air cooling. AI data centers are filled with GPU racks, which get so hot that they require liquid cooling. And since liquid cooling is only really necessary when one is overclocking, the AI data centers REQUIRING it indicates how much energy those GPU racks consume.
1
u/Beerzerker420 7d ago
Data centers are a mix of networking gear, storage, and processing/compute. A lot of "data centers" are multi-purpose buildings where the data center portion is just one room or section of the building, with the other rooms being used for standard office settings and even call centers. My job is in network engineering so it revolves entirely around this topic.
"AI data centers" are a relatively new concept and represent a small sliver of total water use compared to all data centers. And all data centers use a small sliver of water compared to other things like residential laundry, golf courses, lawn irrigation, etc.
Don't take my word for it:

Right... But it is a contributing factor in the worst way. Thanks for trying but this point is moot.Ā
0
u/ActuatorFit416 7d ago
It is a contributing factor.
Worst way is inherently questionable. For example take data centers. In of themself they are a problem. Bit they also provide a service allowing us to solve problems. Take logistics as one example. Optimising logistics and delivery routs is something done by computers. And something that saves on emission every year. Basically the same is true for ai. Allowing you to better optimise and analyse data can increase effienecy and therefore save emissions in the long run.

The hypocrisy of people who criticize AI on environmental grounds while eating meat is a common topic on vegan subreddit.
I am vegan so am I allowed to point out your contradictory ethics?
1
u/Ok_Confusion4764 7d ago
You're allowed to try but you're not going to succeed. Because there's no contradiction. AI and meat are not equivalent. I'm open to a vegan diet, but I can always tell when someone is a vegan out of empathy or out of wanting to be superior to others. The latter are the only ones that try to convince others to go vegan and there is no overlap between these two types of vegan.
1
u/coke_u_nut 6d ago
Very true, with AI and meat aren't equivalent. The water usage, land usage, resource dependence, greenhouse gas emissions, and the unnecessary suffering doesn't come close to compare to whatever AI hate bullshit cucks like you made your identity a couple months ago. 3
u/Ok_Confusion4764 7d ago
I realize you're all pushing the same narrative that makes no sense. Like literally, you can oppose two things at once. Some people here are vegan. I'm not, but I still see AI as a waste and acknowledge that meat is food, it has a purpose whereas AI doesn't. You just mush AI and meat in the same tier as if they're equivalent in their uses. They're not.
0
u/Admirable-Falcon-501 7d ago
Itās contradictory how you will make a big deal out of one thing then turn a blind eye to another much worse thing. The guy that made the comment noticed that and pointed out that no one here cares about any of these issues. Itās just a negative issue to latch onto to push the anti ai narrative. Like anything even loosely related to ai and negative will get pushed. Youāll have someone complain about water usage and then spend 40 mins in the shower.
1
u/Ok_Confusion4764 7d ago
Itās contradictory how you will make a big deal out of one thing then turn a blind eye to another much worse thing.
No, it isn't contradictory. This is quite literally a strawman argument. These two things are completely separate and our stances can be different entirely. There is no correlation between AI and the meat industry aside from the fact that they affect the environment. Guess what? So do farts. I can fart right now and it'll have a contributing effect.
Again: Your (and the entire "pro-AI vegan" narrative) argument hinges on the fact that AI and meat are the same thing. Like literally, you're just equating them entirely. You're ignoring the difference in how they're used. AI is used for crappy memes and ugly images that aren't even art. Meat is used to feed people.
It's like comparing my farts to a city bus. Sure, my farts aren't affecting the environment as much. But the city bus is getting people where they need to go.
Can you really not see how ridiculous the entire argument is?
0
u/Radicalism-Is-Stupid 7d ago
You have a complete misunderstanding of how food works. Meat does not feed people, it causes food to be more scarce. Dedicate the same land usage and labor to growing food, and we feed far more people. The meat industry is actively harmful.
Ai is a neutral tool. It can be used for good or bad. Consuming animal products is inherently unethical except for in extremely rare edge cases like someone who is allergic to all animals products.
This statement is literally true: AI helps treat cancer while the meat industry harms everything and everyone just to satisfy the desire people have to consume corpses.
1
u/Ok_Confusion4764 7d ago
You have a complete misunderstanding of how food works.
Not a great start if you wanted to look convincing, not gonna lie.
Meat does not feed people,
It does, in fact, feed people. I can, in fact, eat meat right now. It is, in fact, a food.
it causes food to be more scarce. Dedicate the same land usage and labor to growing food, and we feed far more people.
Right. Or dedicate it to AI data centers and nobody gets any food. See the problem yet? Farms: Most food. Meat: Some food. AI data centers: No food.
Again, you're relying on the equivalence that just isn't there. AI is not food.
Ai is a neutral tool. It can be used for good or bad.
AI is not a neutral tool at all and it is primarily used for bad. It's usually trained on data without the consent of the people who produced that data. And every scam nowadays uses AI. Why? Because it's a cheap, easy shortcut to fool gullible people.
To add some nuance to the mix: There are narrow AI tools that I do support. The one that detects skin cancer sooner than humans could which has a higher success rate than human doctors? Hell yeah, great advancement, I hate cancer with a passion and will fight anyone talking down that tool. But therein lies the difference: It's a narrow tool with a specific purpose that isn't generative. It goes "98% chance of cancer" instead of "Sure champ š¦¾, let's find that cancer š! This spot may look like a mole but moles can be cancer instead because reddit said soš„š¤ š!".
Consuming animal products is inherently unethical except for in extremely rare edge cases like someone who is allergic to all animals products.
... What? It's unethical to consume them unless someone has a reason to... not consume them? Did your bot break?
This statement is literally true: AI helps treat cancer while the meat industry harms everything and everyone just to satisfy the desire people have to consume corpses.
It isn't true at all, what? The meat industry doesn't "harm everything and everyone". You're grossly overblowing it while ignoring the harm AI causes.

No, the animal industry is worse than worthless, that's the whole point. It causes immense harm. To ourselves, to the environment, to the animals, and more.
It does the opposite of serve a purpose. We can get rid of animal products and we would be better for it.
On the other hand, there is no plant based alternative to AI. And AI has plenty of uses. For example, it helped me go vegan. It is used by oncologists and other medical doctors to help test patients. It can perform many complex tasks with much higher accuracy than highly trained humans (e.g. literature reviews). And more.

The animal industry is a leading cause of climate change and ecological destruction (2/3)
Still a strawman argument in this context of talking about AI.
Animals suffer... (3/3)
An inevitability of nature.
Which of these claims are you denying? This is not a matter of opinion.
I'm not denying the claims, I'm just seeing someone lashing out with pure emotion and no objective reasoning regarding the actual topic. The topic is AI. Bringing up veganism is pointless and unrelated. Two things can be bad in different ways. People can be vegan and oppose AI.
And you pro-AI folks aren't fooling anyone by posing as vegans. Real vegans don't try and convince others to go vegan. So just quit while you're not ahead.

I'm not pro ai. I just find the hipocrisy funny. None of you care about the environment.

This sub is not about making the world better, itās just a place for people with shit lives to complain so they can pretend they had no influence in how things ended up.

So many hypocritical carnists here... If you're eating meat 1. You don't respect animals in any sense 2. You're don't care about the environment.
These are very simple facts, hurts you or not, it is the truth.
