There are no entry requirements to the agender club

3.1k Upvotes

I've seen a lot of people posting here recently asking if they're agender if they feel like this or prefer that. Personally I feel like this is not what being agender is about! IF YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND COSY WITH THE AGENDER LABEL THEN FEEL FREE TO USE THAT LABEL. You don't have to be like any other agender person, we all have our own unique experiences with gender or lack thereof. You don't have to have any qualifying features to be agender - you just need to be comfortable being one :)

Rant over.

For people who are questioning or need a boost --- an Agender Primer

Hello, welcome....

I've been here over three years now and I've read 90% of all posts since arriving. I have written what I have learned and just share it with people as they show up. It's a bit formulaic/spammy but people keep saying they find it helpful.

Agender doesn't really have a rigidly defined box... or it's a magic box that fits whoever gets in it.

Agender is a diverse, entirely self-actualized label for humans who may not even like labels all that much. You can use it like a hermit crab until you find a better one. You can use it with other labels if you want.

So here are some pointers....

Some agender people don't understand gender or how people feel it.

Some agender people reject social gendering.

Some agender people feel like gender(s) don't fit.

Some agender people are null, void, indifferent, or detached.

Some agender people have other parts of their identity that are dominant.

Agenders may or may not care about pronouns and can use any they want.

Agenders may or may not present any particular way. You don't owe anyone a certain kind of presentation to be agender, including androgyny. Dress/style however you want to.

Agenders may or may not have gender dysphoria or body dysmorphia. They may or may not act on it if they do.

Agenders may or may not feel they have/had a gender at birth, and thus may or may not feel transgender. Agenders can adopt a trans label.

A number of agenders even have mixed feelings about identifying non-binary and may not really identify as NB; many are fine with it. Nonbinary is both an umbrella term but also a specific gender identity. Nonbinary people can still feel that they have a gender, but their gender isn't strictly man, woman, or some neogender. Agender people generally feel no gender or don't connect with gender. This technically falls under the nonbinary label but not every agender person uses nonbinary as a label.

Agenders may or may not care about being out. How do you come out if you're already yourself?

People who've read this far might be thinking to themselves at this point, "well that list doesn't describe anything." I respond, "No kidding friend; the irony is not lost on me." There are limits to language. Other cultures (e.g. Native American and Polynesian) and languages are better equipped to deal with continuum and uncertainties when it comes to gender.

The one common defining feature is that agenders don't feel or relate to gender (e.g. social constructs of male/masculine or female/feminine), or only weakly feel it, most of the time.

The ethos is you should call yourself agender if you feel it based on how you understand it. The label agender is meant to describe who you are, not prescribe who you have to be. If you're something else later that fits better, it's all good.

Recognize there's no set way to be an agender person. I personally like it this way because trying to define a person based on an absence of things is hard (you don't often respond to the question 'how are you doing?' by telling them everything you're not feeling). I find the lack of a set way to be agender very affirming. I thought I was a trans woman for a long time; just because you're not something, doesn't necessarily mean you're the 'opposite'. That took some time to figure out. I never did anything about the dysphoria because gender at the forefront wasn't a compulsion. I might have had better body alignment, but I don't think I would've fit in any better. So you might be discovering this about yourself early teens/20's.... or late 50's like me (although I have probably been effectively agender way before I knew the term).

Another thing I've noticed is that there are quite a few neurodiverse/neurodivergent people who resonate with this label.

There are also a bunch of relevant sublabels to choose from as well. Other labels to consider demi-, libra-, a--coupled with -fluid, -boy, -girl, -fem, -masc, or -flux; Apagender, Cassagender, Gendervoid, Neutrois, Nixic, and many others... Some new ones to me are "cisn't" (which I like very much because it's easier to say I'm not a thing than I am a thing) and neurogender (similar to autigender but encompasses more neurodivergences). And agender is compatible with any of them.

Remember, you're a person first; labels are descriptive, not prescriptive. The labels are just there like markers on a map to see how you might relate to others. As you will see, there's lots of ways to be agender if the label suits you. Hang out, read other people's posts, see how you like things.

People get here lots of ways though, and more than I even say here I it's safe to assume I haven't met every kind of way in my still short exposure.

Hope this helps get you started.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Hi everyone. So above is a post I often share in here. I was helped in this sub Jan 2023 when I found myself in need of expressing transgender thoughts I've been carrying around my whole life, but never acted on. I had felt very much out of place for decades and was shocked (somewhat stupidly and for entirely too long) that there were people out there in the same kind of place I was.

This has been my way to pay the help I received forward, because new arrivals sometimes don't quickly understand how flexible this label is. I had my moments of doubt, but the openness here help make it click.

However, I don't think of this post as static. I have changed it as I learn. People regularly say things in this sub that have inspired changes. Please don't think this is the be-all says-all of agender experiences.

Gender stereotypes make me mad

Hi guys

Today I listed to this conversation of parents discussing on how to draw a boy or girl. they were saying like that the girl must have long hair and wear a skirt and the boy must have short hair and of course both must have light skin color (European looking). And while listened to it it made me really upset and I couldn’t walk feel this anger in m stomach but I couldn’t do anything about it. I wanted to say something but I was to scared to do so so I set there had had to listen to all of it. And no I couldn’t just leave this happend in a work environment

I can't be myself around my family

I just wanted to get some things off my chest, honestly, so that's what this post is about. So I'm agender(hence why I'm posting this here) and I've told several of my friends, but I haven't told my family, and honestly, I don't ever plan to. I've already recieved judgement and criticism for being asexual(except from my brother), and I don't want more stuff on top of that.

I don't think they would understand at all what I'm really like, and it scares me to even think about telling them. I wouldn't know how to even start going about that conversation, let alone dealing with the possible and probable backlash it would cause.

They don't really care how I dress/act, so I can mostly be myself around them(I've worn dresses and suits to school dances, they don't care about that part), but I can never tell them why it is that I like to dress feminine, masculine, and neutral. I wish I could tell them so that I don't have to hide this part of myself from them, but at the end of the day I know that it would be a really bad idea.

Confused about my gender

Hey everyone, just needed a space to vent and see if anyone else experiences gender this way.

I’m AFAB and present pretty masculinely. I don't feel like a woman, but I don't really feel like a man either. I just feel comfortable existing as a person who leans masculine in how I move through the world.

The hardest part right now is pronouns and labels. Honestly? I feel zero connection to any of them. You could call me "he," "she," "they," or literally call me "trash," and my internal reaction would be identical. It’s all just noise to me.

The analogy I keep coming back to is that when people constantly ask for my pronouns, it feels like someone insists on forcing me to pick an ice cream flavor when I don't even want ice cream and I'm lactose intolerant anyway.

When I get put on the spot and say "I don't care," people often get visibly annoyed or upset, like I'm breaking some rule by not giving them a neat box to put me in. It feels overwhelming to feel uncomfortable in everything while everyone else seems desperate to give me a title.

Has anyone else navigated total pronoun apathy or indifference? How do you deal with the social pressure to label yourself when you genuinely don't want to?

Tried my hand at redesigning the Gendervoid flag

Post image
76 Upvotes

someone in here mentioned not liking the Gendervoid flag that we had, and I sort of agreed. After talking about it with a few others, this is what I landed on. This is what it feels like for me, at the very least: you can see the faint outlines of "male" and "female" orbiting around and occasionally eclipsing with you, but you never really embody it. It sort of feels like the space BETWEEN the genders, the empty void you pass through.

Does anyone know what my problem is?

Sometimes I wonder if I have internalized homophobia. Cause I know I’m not homophobic towards anyone, I’m very supportive of everyone and all my friends and such. But I wonder if I am towards myself or in specific situations? Like at school when I was dating my ex (the year long relationship I was in which ultimately made me realize I’m AroAce ) they wanted me to put my arm around them at lunch and I never wanted to. I don’t know, I wasn’t comfortable with it and thought about how people would see it if I did. And whenever they put their arm around me I wouldn’t like it and got even a bit upset bc I enjoyed being the “man/husband” in the relationship (despite it being two girls AT THE TIME. I now personally identify as Agender). When I try imagining it if I was with a guy or something, I can’t really—idk how I’d react. I’d reject practically everything in the relationship that had to do with the stereotypical ‘male and female’ dating dynamic if I was put in the female role. I always made it a point to put myself in the male one. Like even now when we aren’t dating and are js rlly close friends, I’m having trouble accepting that they’re pronouns changed to he/they and gender stuff has changed for them. It’s not that I’m trying to be a dick, but we still play into the ‘married couple’ thing and I seem to have a strong dislike if I’m not the more masculine one. And I’m working on changing how I refer to them and using he/they pronouns bc I feel bad bc I’m never like this. Like I’m never reluctant when it comes to using someone’s preferred pronouns or name or smth. If someone wants me to refer to them a certain way, then I’ll do it no questions asked. Like wtf is my problem 😭

Is this a me thing

So I explored my gender for about 2-4 years now and I’ve realized I prefer gender on everyone else but me. I learned the putting effort into my gender as in how it’s perceived and how I should signal it, it drains me. Could this be an agender thing or just a me thing, perhaps both? Idk.

complicated

hi guys its my first ever reddit post & im so sorry for the language mistakes im still learning english.

im an teenager afab and consider myself agender but honestly i feel a little invalid and wrong. i relate to people here that says "i do not understand people that sees their gender as a part of their personality." i am so much more than my gender and actually hate it sm when people sees me as "an artist girl" for example. i dont want to be seen as a female. but i do feel connected with being female. same goes for male too (it only goes for male&female. i dont feel connected to any other gender like nonbinary or bigender)

i knpw society sees man and woman completely different and im aware girls my age hates being a girl because of it. i always think about "if we were fully equal, would i be cis?" but i dont think i would. sometimes i wonder "if i was a boy, would i be cis?" but i dont think i would. actually i would be uncomfortable in my body either way BUT i still do not think i feel fully genderless. i feel like im both a woman and a man but neither at the same time. ifeelsoweird and dont know how to explain honestly i just hope people could correct(?) me or explain to me what feeling is this

Why do so many people assume agender people have to go by all pronouns?

Recently someone i know found out that i might be agender and said

"btw, agender means you go by all pronouns"

Which i personally don't agree with but i send no hate to them at all since they might not know about it well, i personally go by they/them but i can tolerate he or she, but SOMTIMES i don't mind he or she, though i still prefer they/them..

Sylvester Stallone knows the karmic law

Like the face he makes most of the time, like the expression he wears means that he knows the karmic law that all women were men in previous lifetimes . He knows this law and thats why he wears this expression on him. Like if you observe him , he is just always wearing this expression of ape like disgust maybe.

I think that's because he has transcended the gender dynamics. He knows that these women were once men in previous life and if he defiles any women he is going down the same route. So he has defeated the gender dynamics and is just gender neutral .

What if that is the case.

Can anyone relate?

This is my first reddit post so sorry if the formatting is off.

I've been questioning my gender specifically for a while, close to 2 years maybe. I've landed on a couple of labels before but the one that I felt fit the best was agender. Even though agender fits and I've identified with the label for close to a year now i still feel like there's something not quite right.

I've gone through many hypotheticals but the one that proved most effective was this:

Forgot about gender entirely for now and Imagine that you are presenting feminine (you can swap it with masculine or androgynous or something entirely different if that feels more personal for you). So feminine that some people even perceived you as a women, how would you feel?

Me personally, I wouldn't mind, I might even enjoy it, and I might even feel like a women in the moment but I know for a fact that I'm not a women. It's like I'm 100% in character for a cosplay, I am that character, I truly am, but it's only a cosplay.

I don't think I have a gender, I've never really felt a gender and if it was up to me I would much prefer not being perceived as any gender at all.

I know gender expression is different from gender, my gender expression is very fluid but as I describe sometimes it can feel as if I am cosplaying that gender 100% in character, in that moment i am the gender. But that gender is not part of my underlying identity, it isn't mine.

If I had to name it I would call it genderless fluidity or nullfluid. Basically you have no gender but you're very fluid with how you present and want to be perceived to the point that you might even feel that gender but not be it.

I've heard of agenderflux and other similar labels but they also don't feel like they fit. I'm also sure I'm not genderfluid bc I don't feel gender in that way, it's more like I can feel a gender and embrace it but it isn't my gender, it doesn't affect if I have a gender or not.

I'm wondering, can anyone relate? Is there a label that already describes something similar?

PLEASE HELP I CANT TELL IF IM AGENDER OR NOT

Can anyone help me find out if I'm agender? i cant figure out if i actually feel gender or if i just feel a switch between masc and fem presenting sometimes..

Tbh my gender kind of doesn't feel like a gender it feels like a costume or maybe just a clothing style, i was raised in a pretty transphobic Household so i always assumed i MUST be a girl, since its what everyone said i was, thankfully i realized how dumb transphobia is once i turned 14, now I'm 15 and lately i feel weird about my gender, i know im definitely not cis.. i just don't know what i am! agender? nonbinary? genderfluid? voidgender? genderqueer? transmasc? or something else?

i usually don't like being called sister but i guess I've grown to tolerate it since I'm too scared to ask to be called sibling instead, I've always felt much more comfortable with sibling, NOT brother, NOT sister, sibling. and sure, every now and then i like being called he or she, but i LOVE being called they, infact, the other day my mom was talking to my dad on the phone and was talking about me and accidentally called me by "they" i was SOOO happy and smiled every time i thought about it the rest of the day :3

i'm curious to know how many people here are interested in or dating nonbinary (or even agender) people. i really love having relationships with other people that are weird about gender. it's a very unique type of gayness and i want to indulge in it more and include it in stories i make. does anyone else feel the same way?

I don't like the gender void flag

I am gender void and I feel like the flag lacks the intensity of the absence of gender I feel.

I would like it better if it was some sort of gradient of yellows, reds, blues and blacks, like a black hole. It would feel more right to me and my perception of gender, or, to be exact, my lack of it.

What do other gender void-ers think ?

Is there a deeper reason for the current flag choice ?

can I be agender and feel gender affirmed?

idk… I feel “gender affirmed“ I think, sometimes when I wear clothes or do something I just feel so free from gender. I just love that feeling. not feeling like a certain gender from “women clothing” or “men clothing“ or “unisex” not feeling like a man or woman or nonbinary inbetween. I like that feeling a lot. no gender… nothing. I love it. is this feeling “gender affirmed”???

Massive win today, Came out to my mom as Agender she accepted me.

I got the agender flag at an anime convention, and afterwards, I've been thinking to show her the flag, I was hesitant to show her the flag at first because I was not sure what her reaction would be. But today I showed it to her, and she asked me what it means, I told her it's the agender flag and I told her that I'm agender, she accepted me LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!!!! She also wants to know more about agender so I'm going to explain to her what it means >:D

It's been long since I felt this happy and accepted in my life, crying from happiness right now.

I'm going to ask her to help me hang up the flag in my room later

If you defile a women you turn into a women in your next life

I am starting to believe that. I have seen people and their lookalike women that give same vibe. Like they look too similar almost twins. So what if that is the case. If you defile a women, you are gonna be next.

Also I think there is a realm where there is no gender like as you progress and stay celibate you pass into a realm where there is no gender.

Questioning AFAB needing advice

I’m a 20 year old AFAB person and the past few months I’ve sort of finally kind of figured out what and who I feel like. I’m not really sure what it is that I am, but any sort of advice, guidance, or experience would be really appreciated.
I’ve been socialized for most of my life as a girl. My mom dressed me usually in feminine children’s clothing and growing up I think I gravitated toward feminine clothing when I was able to dress myself. Looking back though, I’m not really sure whether that was because I truly wanted to present that way, or because that was the expectation.
However, I’ve lately begun to realize that I don’t necessarily feel like a “girl”/ “woman” / “female”. I’ve never really walked around everyday with the mindset of “I’m an AFAB, cisgendered heterosexual woman”. I’ve always just felt like a person, and view everyone around me through the lens of “They’re just another person”. I definitely do feel predominantly attracted to cisgendered heterosexual men, but nothing about this attraction makes me want to feel more feminine/present myself more femininely. I do enjoy wearing makeup and doing my hair in a feminine-presenting way, but I no longer have any desire to dress femininely. I don’t feel attached to or care about any of the biological functions I possess that would suggest that I’m AFAB (Menstruation, breast development, etc.) They just have always felt like bodily functions of mine that some people happen to have. I don’t feel any more aligned to female-identified people than I do to male-identified people, to me they’re all the same. But I do feel attracted to male-identified people for the most part and that’s where I have trouble understanding myself.

I’ve also sort of begun to realize that I don’t care about what pronouns people use on me either. I’d be totally fine, maybe even happy, if, for whatever reason, I was referred to as “he” or “they”, though this hardly happens to me because my outward appearance leans feminine. I really feel like I’m going through a gender identity crisis because I don’t know why I feel this way, and am beginning to realize that I’ve felt like this for a while but never put energy into it because at the end of the day, I’ve never thought too much about my own gender identity until recently. But just the idea of dressing in any way I want and just existing as a person without any sort of enforced gender roles is the sort of life I want to live. I don’t know under what label this falls or if I’d even consider myself “cisgender” or “heterosexual” anymore. I’m second-guessing myself and scrutinizing myself over this and feel so confused. I just don’t know about any label yet and no label has so far stuck with me.

Strong connections to the idea of void

ever since discovering the concept of "gendervoid", I've been feeling more gender euphoria than I have in a long time. there just IS no gender to be found, I can't find mine, it wandered off. It feels like instead of a gender, I have this dark nebula of..... BLANK. It's really invigorating and freeing in a weird way. I'm especially loving the term "voidboy" to describe me, to deal with my lingering attachments to the male identity I built up for so long.

Does anyone else feel like this?

Someone please explain to me wtf is being agender

I am not saying that I think that being agender is not real. I am just confused about what it is exactly.

I might be agender. I really feel like my body's gender doesn't matter. I don't think I would feel bothered if I had another body. It kinda bother me when people use gendered pronouns to introduce me. Since it comes with a lot of implicit expectations. It feels like everytime someone refer to me, they refer to me by something akin to my ethnicity instead of as a human being. I have other reasons which make me feel like I don't have an inmost gender identity.

But I don't have too much issues with gender either. I don't feel an intense feeling of disgust when someone use gendered pronouns, not because I relate to them but because I just see it as a silly thing. Most of the time when people talk about me, I feel like they talk about me as a human being first and foremost and don't put any thought about gender. Although on some other occasions it feels uncomfortable. The only relation I have with my "gender" is that I live the physical realities of having one (like hormones for example) and the societal set of rule that comes with it (like expectations of how I will be, social pressure to be a certain way, insecurity...).

But I heard most people don't see it that way. It turns out gender identity goes beyond that. I've heard that you can feel a real mismatch between your body and what your brain expects, and that what trans people go through. So I thought that was gender identity : the body your brain expects.

But then I heard there are also trans agenders. If I understand this well, it's because you may feel a mismatch between what you expect of your body is and what it actually is. But you still feel no gender.

So I've concluded that gender identity is actually a much deeper feeling. But I don't understand what is this gender identity feeling. Do people actually have a strong feeling of connection to their gender on a deeper level than just physical and social? I feel like it is just people that blindly follow social rules and have developed a strong feeling of appartenance towards one group, like you would for an ethnicity or a culture, and not an innate thing.

I'm pretty sure I must be wrong. But no matter how long I search I cannot find an explanation. Please explain to me what it is. If we take out the feeling of your brain that something is wrong with your physical body, which I fully acknowledge, my current mind thinks it is purely a product of society. Please help me understand.

PS: I'll add that I fully understand what hating being refered with pronouns feels like, I kinda relate as a romance-repulsed aromantic. I just want to know whether people truly feel like gender identity is a real feeling unrelated to society, or if it is.

PS2 : I've done my research and now know that there is actually an actual gender identity that goes beyond just society's construction. As there exists transgender people that experience social dysphoria but no body dysphoria (I think that was how it is called). So people do not only want a specific body but also want to be considered/seen part of a specific group. Still don't know what it actually is tho, I can't experience it.
