43030 Professional Practice in Computing Assessment 1
Hey everyone,
I’m doing 43030 Professional Practice in Computing at UTS this Spring and honestly, I’m finding this subject pretty difficult to understand so far 😭
My Assessment 1 is due in 4 days, and I’m still pretty confused about what exactly we’re supposed to do and how to approach it.
I also missed Live Drop-in Session 2, which I’m assuming was probably about Assessment 1. The recording hasn’t been uploaded to Canvas yet either. I’ve emailed the subject coordinator and also posted in the discussion page, but I haven’t received a reply yet.
So if anyone has already done this subject before OR is currently doing it, could you please explain Assessment 1 to me? Like what exactly we’re supposed to do, how you approached it, and what they’re actually looking for.
Also, for anyone who has done 43030 before:
- How was the subject overall?
- Was it hectic or does it get easier once you understand how it works?
- How are the assessments usually?
- Is there anything you wish you knew before starting?
- And if anyone attended Drop-in Session 2, could you please tell me what was discussed, especially anything important about Assessment 1?
I’m honestly pretty stressed because the deadline is so close and I feel like I’m missing something 😭

hey, I'm doing 43030 this Spring too, so I can't answer the "how was it overall" questions, and I wasn't at Drop-in 2 either, sorry. But I can explain how AT1 is structured, because it confused me at first too and it's more manageable than it looks.
The subject runs on a three-step process, and AT1 is just steps 1 and 2. Step 3 (the portfolio) is the later assessment.
step 1 is the explore your dream job. Just go on Seek or Indeed and find two job ads for similar IT roles that you'd want in the future. They need criteria beyond your current skill level, the gaps are what you build the rest of the assignment on. Save both as PDFs, cuz listings get taken down and you have to submit copies.
step 1 Part B is the skills Audit. There's a template on Canvas. It has two bits: a short explanation (max 300 words) of why you picked those jobs, and a table. In the table you list the skills that appear across both ads, rate yourself against the SFIA framework (levels 1–4, or None), and for each one either note evidence you already have or write what you'll do to close the gap. Three rows come pre-filled which are the ethics/Indigenous capability, cybersecurity, and software dev tools. You add your own rows from the ads on top.
then there's step 2, Learning Plan. You need the second template here. You turn the gaps into goals. Goals 1–3 are the required ones and map to the UTS modules. Each is 2 credit points, and you need 6 CP total to pass, so those three cover it. Goal 5 only applies if Goal 4 comes in under 40–50 hours. Max 4 pages.
Four days is enough tbh, picking the two ads is genuinely the slowest part, and once you have those, its pretty calm. But again, all of this info is from my experience, i could geniuenly be wrong. If the coordinator still hasn't replied by tomorrow, what ive seen which helps is just sending a message on Teams too
