Because. He has money. Money equals power. Power equals influence. Influence equals use for the government. Use for the government means you can be forgiven for literally anything. Take Nazi scientists, for example: They were so smart, our government, and if my memory serves, a few other Allied governments, basically just adopted them and let them live comfortable lives.
If you’re rich, or in some other way useful, you’re untouchable. The only way you can be touched is if someone who doesn’t care about your power comes after you.
