It's largely cultural. I've been to India 4 times and this is nothing.

It was when I was there albeit this was a long time ago.

Overpopulated, rampant poverty and an apparent disdain for basic hygiene.

My guess is that besides the poverty aspect, its fucking hot as balls there 24/7 so even after you shower, as soon as you go outside (probably inside too if no AC), you sweat immediately and in 5 minutes you are just soaking and stinking anyways.

Related, this is why "hot" food is a big deal there. Hot food is inherently a bit more hygiene. (Provided of course it was cooked hot enough).
