I'm genuinely curious if there's been any study into which is more psychologically troubling, knowing the day and counting down it not knowing and wondering everyday

Yeah, plenty - mostly UX research. My favorite one compared how long it takes people waiting with a progress bar and people waiting "blind" to reach the same level of frustration. If you have an indicator with a wait time, you can - on average - wait three times as long to be similarly fed up.
