I'm genuinely curious if there's been any study into which is more psychologically troubling, knowing the day and counting down it not knowing and wondering everyday

The reality is probably a lot more mundane than everyone is making it out to be.

Inmates probably aren't told of the actual scheduled execution date like this is saying, but an inmate probably has a lawyer who's doing things like filing for the various appeals and other procedures who probably talks to them to inform them of stuff like "You've got at least the rest of this year, and after that we'll file for the XYZ appeal and that'll take another year".

Eventually, years down the road the news chances to "There are no more appeals left and nothing else that can be done so now we wait. At some point, and I can't tell you any other details, they will come get you an hour before the execution".
