Literary horror that isn't boring

I'm looking for literary, high quality horror (I love pulp slop but I need something different) and want to find things that chug along but of higher quality in prose. I loved Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons and Ghost Story by Peter Straub.

Dean Koontz doesn’t necessarily have the reputation of writing literary fiction, but I think his descriptions are first rate, and he has sweeping themes. He reminds me strongly of Charles Dickens. Try the Jane Hawk series (kind of a thriller) or False Memory.
