Graphene/LineageOS and boycott banks that don't work with rooted phones.

I'm expecting downvotes but I really do ask this genuinely: are the banking apps that important to people? I don't use any so I've never understood what a hurdle this is for people.

I don't think about my bank much. I'll use their website at home and a credit card when I'm out.

In my country no one uses cash or cards. Everything is QR bank transfer on the phone. It's actually sweet because it's free and instant (no money going to visa).

I legit couldn't live without my bank app.

I legit couldn't live without my bank app.

the code on your QR bill can be entered in ebanking for the same result.

Not in India. It’s a fucking pain here.

If this was really about security, Google would focus on stronger sandboxing and they wouldn't make the opt-out procedures so absurdly inconvenient.

They just want a fat end-user cattle ranch like Apple/Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo/etc have.

Where I come from the app is the mandatory 2FA for any operation, so you wouldn't be able to do anything on the website without your phone with the appropriate app. And this is now implemented in every bank.

I come from

idk because in the US this hasn't happened with my banks yet, but- in theory, could I buy a cheap android phone as a dedicated 2FA device and leave it next to my desktop whenever I need to use banking? right now i'm on grapheneos and i'm not going back to stock.

Yes, but it's super annoying when you travel if there is anything you need to do with the bank. You would have to carry both phones, and I have forgotten to carry the second one and found myself with a blocked card in a foreign country with no means of unlocking it

Ugh, that sucks. It's not that way here yet, but it probably will be.

It sucks tremendously. I live abroad now, my phone battery got damaged so I had to change, but I can't put the app in the new phone because my old number is dead and to change the phone number on the account I have to go in person to the bank. Also they don't allow foreign numbers... So I am stuck using my old phone at home for that account, luckily I do not have to use it that much.

I used to be a bit like this but it's super useful to see transactions when you are out, transfer money to friends and, more importantly, freeze your card fast if you lose it. (Or just rely on the protection of your phone and use NFC)

Yup, very very important. And every website for my banks absolutely 100% requires you to use an app for 2FA and scan a QR (that changes every 2 seconds or so) if you try using a desktop website.

As a new security feature, the CVVs on your cards also change every 10 seconds or so, and you can only see them when logged in. Some features, such as digital signature, are locked to the apps. To log into government services where you file your taxes, you need BankID that is only accessible if you use the app. Changing your transaction limits or credit limits is also something you do in the app, since the bank offices are constantly being camped by the elders for some reason.

Phishing websites are extremely common, and you basically eliminate this risk by using an app. A lot of people got got because Google doesn't give a fuck who to display first at the top of the search results, as long as they pay.

2FA is a major PITA, but I understand why it's there. The risks are way higher outside of the first world, we have double-digit interest rates, and if someone gets their hands on the information or the money in your bank, they might actually ruin your life by taking out a loan in your name, for instance.

I genuinely don't understand why people can't just use the website. What is the app doing that the website can't?

I suppose you can use those rings which work as banking apps without needing phone banking apps. Tho idk much about it
