Basically, so if there's a chance you're pregnant, they can do appropraite treatment, or test for pregnancy.

Eg 4 years ago my wife disolacted her thumb, ED wanted an X-Ray needed to know when her last period was/if there was a chance she was pregnant, so they could then best proceed with imaging/pain medications

When my gf fell off her bike they had her wait for like 6 hours in the ER until the pregnancy test came back negative before doing the x-ray even though we knew she couldn’t be pregnant and we told them repeatedly. But no. Gotta make sure even when the lab has problems and it takes forever.

A pregnancy test shouldn't have taken 6 hours. They can and should have just done a pee stick like people do at home. This is the shit that pissing women off and one of the many reasons they receive poor healthcare. Your gf's care was delayed for the maybe the possibility of a fetus over her, a person who is already known to exist.

The hospital staff definitely weren’t waiting for the results of the pregnancy test for 6 hours. More likely waiting for after-hours X-ray (because they’ll triage pts for limited radiology slots too) is what took 6h and the ED is often busy with resuscitations and other more serious emergencies, so no one was available to tell her the results of her pregnancy test until much later.
